A skill that will put them at the forefront of their field in the future. 1. IMPORTANT DATES Preliminary rounds: 11 March to 17 May 2019. Semi-final rounds: 10 May to 08 June 2019. The final takes places at ATKV Goudini Spa - Grade 1 to 7: 01 August 2019 - Grade 8 to 12: 02 August 2019 2. ENTRY FEES AND CLOSING DATES Entry fee: R185 per learner. 2.1 Closing date for entry form A (South Africa only) Only the number of learners who will participate. The cost per learner before the closing date of 15 February 2019 is R185 per learner. After the closing date, the late entry fee amounts to R280 per learner. NO entries will be accepted after 28 February 2019. 2.2 Closing date for entry form B: Three weeks before the opening round begins The names of the participants and their subjects must be emailed or faxed to the relevant regional organiser three weeks before the opening round of the region. See pages 4, 5 and 6 for organisers. Schools that enrol must follow up with the relevant regional organiser to ensure the information has been received. Closing dates (Namibia only) The closing date for entry form A is 22 March 2019. The closing date for entry form B is 17 May 2019. CANCELLATION POLICY Written notice of withdrawal/cancellation must be received by the ATKV at least 30 days before. The start of the first preliminary round in your region. If the event is cancelled by the ATKV, the entry fee will be refunded. 3.1 Course of the competition The competition is as follows: preliminary rounds, semi-finals and national finals. The ATKV determines the number of participants taking part in the semi-final round. The schools will be notified and the names of the participants for the semi-finals will appear 10 days after the completion of the preliminary rounds on the ATKV website, www.atkv.org.za. The number of participants taking part in the final is determined by the ATKV and depends on the number of entries per region. 4. In other words, it is a reasoned speech and not a talk. Participants will be penalised if speeches from previous years and/or duplicated speeches are delivered. VERY IMPORTANT: we reiterate our request to discourage participants and parents from buying speeches. Rather, we encourage them to order and purchase the ATKV manual for writing speeches. The order form is available on the ATKV website, www.atkv.org.za. It has come to the attention of the ATKV that more and more people and organisations ride on the ATKV’s name and, without the ATKV’s permission or knowledge, write “ATKV” speeches and courses – even finishing courses.     CHAPTER 3 Designing the South African Nation From Nature to Culture Jacques Lange and Jeanne van Eeden There is to date very little published research and writing about South African design history. One of the main obstacles has been dealing with the legacy of forty years of apartheid censorship (1950 to 1990) that banned and destroyed a vast array of visual culture in the interests of propaganda and national security, according to the Beacon for Freedom of Expression (http://search.beaconforfreedom.org/about_database/south%20africa.html). This paucity of material is aggravated by the general lack of archival and doc- umentary evidence, not just of the struggle against apartheid, but also of the wider domain of design in South Africa. Even mainstream designed mate- rial for the British imperialist and later apartheid government has been lost or neglected in the inadequate archival facilities of the State and influential organizations such as the South African Railways. Efforts to redress this are now appearing as scholars start to piece together fragments, not in order to write a definitive history of South African design, but rather to write histories of design in South Africa that recuperate neglected narratives or revise earlier historiographies. This chapter is accordingly an attempt to document a number of key moments in the creation of South African nationhood between 1910 and 2013 in which communication design played a part. Our point of departure is rooted in Zukin’s (1991: 16) belief that symbolic and material manifestations of power harbour the ideological needs of powerful institutions to manipulate class, gender and race relations, ultimately to serve the needs of capital (and governance).

The European colonisation of South Africa from 1652 was facilitated by the use of force. Boer commandos and British military regiments and volunteer units enforced the peace in outlying areas and fought against the indigenous population as did other colonial powers such as France in North Africa and Germany in German South West Africa, to name but a few. The period 1912 to 1945 is no exception, but with the difference that military force was used to suppress uprisings of white citizens as well. White industrial workers experienced this military suppression in 1907, 1913, 1914 and 1922 when they went on strike. Job insecurity and wages were the main causes of the strikes and militant actions from the strikers forced the government to use military force when the police failed to maintain law and order.

In this dissertation, I consider how South African crime fiction, which draws on a long international literary history, engages with the conventions and boundaries of the genre, and how it has adapted to the specific geographical, social, political and historical settings of South Africa. A key aspect of this research is the work’s temporal setting. I will focus on local crime fiction which is set in contemporary South Africa as this enables me to engage with current perceptions of South Africa, depicted by contemporary local writers. My concern is to explore how contemporary South African crime fiction narrates post-apartheid South Africa. Discussing Margie Orford’s Daddy’s Girl and the possibilities of South African feminist crime fiction, my argument shoes how Orford narrates post-apartheid through the lens of the oppression and abuse of women. The next chapter looks at Roger Smith’s thriller Mixed Blood. Smith presents the bleakest outlook for South Africa and I show how, even though much of his approach may appear to be ‘radical’, the nihilism in his novel shows a deep conservatism.

    The scope of south Africa’s exodus Thousands of predominantly white, young, skilled South Africans of all persuasions, regions and professions are leaving the country each year to settle mainly in Australia, New Zealand, Britain, the USA and Canada. Official statistics suggest that just over 8 200 people had emigrated from South Africa in 1998 and about 9 000 in 1999, but because of an under-reporting of between one half and two thirds the unofficial total would have been between 16 000 and 25 000. These latest emigrants joined the 550 000 emigrants who have left officially since 1945, in addition to the 500 000 to one million emigrants who may have left the country unofficially during this period. The real significance of this exodus can be found not so much in the sheer size of the exodus - even though it is large by any standard - but in the fact that these emigrants represent a huge loss of human capital: they are mostly professionals and their skills and ability to create wealth and jobs cannot be replaced overnight, if at all. In addition, emigration on this scale raises the questions of how many more people may join this new Trek, and whether this emigration will continue at current levels or whether a sudden mass exodus might become a possibility. 2.1 O f f ic ia l s t a t is t ic s vs the a c t u a l n u m b e r s : THE 2:1 AND 3:1 RATIOS As mentioned earlier, the number of people leaving South Africa each year is at least double and could be triple the official numbers provided by Statistics South Africa.

    APARTHEID MYTHOLOGY AND SYMBOLISM. DESEGREGATED AND RE-INVENTED IN THE SERVICE OF NATION BUILDING IN THE NEW SOUTH AFRICA: THE COVENANT AND THE BATTLE OF BLOOD/NCOME RIVER INTRODUCTION Although the focus and emphasis changed over time the Covenant, Battle of Blood/Ncome River, its physical monumental manifestation and its annual commemoration on December 16 was one of the key components in the mythological legitimisation of Afrikaner nationalism and its apartheid manifestation in the 20th century. It was an important element in the master narrative of the Afrikaners as God’s holy chosen people with a mission to christianise and civilise a barbaric country given to them by God. Since the seventies historians started questioning the mythology surrounding these two events. This led to various corrections in the interpretation of the events, heated debate within Afrikaner circles and also affected the emphasis of the annual December 16 Day of the Vow commemorations. By 1994 the hold of these myths and the accompanying master narrative on Afrikaner historical consciousness seemed largely broken leaving a vacuum in Afrikaner historical thinking. With the introduction of the new political dispensation in 1994 reconciliation and nation- building became key objectives of the new South African government. In line with these objectives the government decided to maintain December 16 as a national public holiday 1 but changed its name to the Day of Reconciliation reflecting the new role the state wished it to play in the New South Africa. The paper will trace aspects of the pre–1994 role of the Covenant and Battle of Blood River mythology in the development of Afrikaner nationalism and the legitimisation of apartheid up to its demise in 1994.
