I feel the pull of Staples, tempting me to buy office supplies I don’t need (but I don’t care, I want that desk organizer and this stack of notebooks and all these pens and pant, pant, pant). I get a twinge of anxiety when I wake up in the morning – not because I feel like I am late, but because I feel like I am at the start of something. Despite being at the end of the year, September feels like the start of something. Of course, all this is just muscle memory. I fucking hated school. Seriously. All it did was get in the way. I am not talking about games (though, yea, who wants to go to sleep when they could be playing Castlevania or rolling the bones in Dungeons & Dragons?). No, what I mean is that school, from about fourth grade on, was consistently concerned with what I ought to be doing rather than what I was suited for doing. This is why when I read a story like Juan Valdelomar’s in this issue, I get so pissed off. I heard plenty of permutations of the classic, dreaded administrator proclamation, “You’re not living up to your potential.” “You could be doing so much better.” “If only you applied yourself.” The problem with the endless variations of this nonsense is that all a kid hears is, “You’re fucking everything up, bucko.” I knew back then just as well as I know now that I did not need algebra, sentence diagrams, Victorian literature (fuck you twice, Jane Eyre), the ability to balance chemical equations or half a million other useless things. Not useless in essence, but entirely useless to me. I was destined to be either a creative person slaving over words and pictures, or to pump gas for a living. I knew that when I was three feet tall, how come none of my educators did? Y’all should have spent your time teaching me to be an efficient researcher and how to balance a checkbook, then I wouldn’t have had to figure that out on my own. * * * I could go on, but I’ve already used my allotment of F-bombs for this week. Instead, allow me to introduce our stories for the week. Ian Gonzales talks to Jörg Tittel, writer of the forthcoming graphic novel Ricky Rause has a Gun about satire and cheap knock-offs. Juan Valdelomar responds to Matt Duhamel’s “An Artist’s Statement” (for way back in Issue Eight) with a statement of his own. Cassidee Moser has a personal revelation thanks to the Nintendo 3DS Street Pass. Finally, Ansh Patel ruminates on how death is not the end in Crusader Kings II. Stu Horvath, Kearny, New Jersey September 8, 2014 A Certain Famous Rodent By Ian Gonzales ublisher Self Made Hero describes its new graphic novel, Ricky Rouse has a PGun, as taking “a curious look at China – a country that, once we look past its often outrageous copyright infringements, is a culture ripe with innovation and a unique, courageous spirit.” The book is a satire of action movie clichés and stereotypes, turning those familiar tropes and images on their proverbial heads. Ricky Rouse writer, Jörg Tittel, took the time to talk with Unwinnable about some of his favorite comics, films, copyright, creativity and, of course, his brand new comic. UNWINNABLE: What makes comics the medium to tell this story on? Jörg Tittel: After realizing that a movie would probably be quite expensive – and I somehow didn’t have the money to finance it myself, nor the balls to pitch it to Disney – I decided to tell the story as a series of haikus on Twitter. My wife suggested it was unlikely that would pay the bills. And so someone told me about this new medium called “comic books” which cleverly combines pictures and the occasional blurb to tell stories and I thought to myself: that’s it! I’ll just make one of them! I started to draw it myself, but somehow stick figures look crap in mascot outfits. Nonsense aside, I thought comics would be perfect to tell this tale. I’m a massive fan of Paul Verhoeven’s movies and if you take his original RoboCop, that was heavily inspired by Judge Dredd and 2000 A.D. comics of the day. I don’t have any scientific data on this, but comics may have been the first entertainment medium to seamlessly blend high concepts, action, political satire, stories and the occasional burst of ultra violence. Unless you take the Bible of course. I saw the historically accurate Noah movie the other day and that managed to be both hilarious and totally insane. And all these people drowned in it. It was dark, man! Even the Man of Steel can’t kill that many civilians in a boss fight! Comics are possibly the leanest and meanest medium to tell stories visually. They manage to dodge even the most brutal political and corporate censorship and occasionally they even get adapted into awesome movies. Who knows, perhaps someone will want to make Ricky Rouse has a Gun for the big screen with me. I’d like to nominate Quentin Tarantino as Executive Producer and Stephen Chow as Director. They do read this, right? UNWINNABLE: What brought you to comics? J.T.: I was born in Belgium, so my parents literally brought me into the European capital of comics. Some of our dearest family friends – like the awesome Grzegorz Rosinski whose Thorgal series is still massive in France, Belgium and beyond to this day – worked in the world of comics. As a kid, I often entertained the idea to draw for a living – I used to be rather skilled at it (not sure what happened) – but my passions took me into theatre, film and videogames. I almost lost touch with comics entirely, except for masterpieces like V for Vendetta, Watchmen, etc. Ricky Rouse reignited my childhood love for comic books. And as a sleep deprived dad of two little ones, they also seem to be the only thing I can read from start to finish. UNWINNABLE: And now for the elephant in the room… Ricky Rouse has a Gun is a comic where American terrorists invade a Chinese theme park and murder people on Christmas Day. It’s coming out (according to Amazon) in mid-September. Early September still has a sting here across the pond. Why release the book at that particular time? J.T.: Argh! I hoped you’d never notice. It’s a coincidence, really. September just happened to be the only open slot in my publisher Self Made Hero’s event packed year. This month for instance saw the UK release of their biggest book ever, Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Seconds (it’s published by Random House in the US). It was great to see Bryan on his book UK book tour. He even got cornered by a real life Ricky Rouse. Seconds is awesome. You should all read it, but only after you’ve bought Ricky Rouse has a Gun of course. Nah, just buy both. Treat yourself. You know you deserve it. UNWINNABLE: That’s the other thing that’s interesting about this book - the marketing campaign. You have a music video and the free preview up. Has the marketing, especially the video, brought more attention to the book? J.T.: Yes, I think so. The music video has had over 240,000 downloads thanks to our BitTorrent Bundle campaign and people have downloaded the 30-page sample in the thousands. I probably went through all this trouble – and have been lucky to get the blessing and tremendous support from Self Made Hero to pull it off – mostly out of insecurity. It’s my first comic book, I’m a total nobody in this world and so I’m overcompensating. Ultimately, I hope the book will speak for itself. UNWINNABLE: There is a scene where Uncle Hucheng shows Ricky the costume he will be wearing. It’s Hucheng’s pride and joy and he is offended when Rick notes that the costume looks like a certain famous rodent. How do you intend to continue the discussion about copyright and innovation in a world where so much art seems to be more and more obviously derivative? J.T.: Chris Sprigman, author of The Knockoff Economy: How Imitation Sparks Innovation and the awesome foreword in my book, has only just invited me to talk at NYU on September 23rd (two days after Brooklyn Book Fest, where I’ll be signing books, too) and hopefully we’ll have an awesome discussion on copyright vs.

Where it is impossible to map it to an already existing one a new nation is created with its own unique flag.

    Conflict, Justice, Decolonization: Critical Studies of Inter-Asian Societies (2021) 2709-5479 Deus Vult, the Representation of the Conflicts with the Religious Other in Grand Strategy Video Games: Crusader Kings Piotr Pawel Skora International Center for Cultural Studies, Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Program National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University This article aims to define the relationship between grand strategy video games and religion to cast more light on the issue of representation of and the conflict with the religious Other in this media. The specificity of the depiction of religions in grand strategy video games lies in the military orientation of their gameplay, their apparent aseptic presentation of data and their emergent narratives. Thus, an analysis of this genre necessarily implies an approach to its formal elements, such as gameplay mechanics and its contents, including explicit narratives, shown in these games. In order to attempt this analysis, two main trends of thought are presented. The first critically approaches grand strategy computer games as carriers of discriminatory and violent ideologies. Several theories defend that an inherently military and intolerant character of video games can be traced to the military technological development and the remediation of board war games in the twentieth century. The second conceives gameplays as opportunities to construct and deconstruct religious world views actively. It has often been defended that, given a chance to assume the role of a character with different religious beliefs from their own, players are pushed to understand and act according to the systems of values of the religious Other. The case studies of Crusader Kings II and Crusader Kings III are presented to explore these two theoretical trends through the strongly religion oriented content and military-focused mechanics of these particular video games.

Video-games, although often dismissed as being trivial in the realm of academia, can carry just as much weight and meaning as any other medium, and there is no exception in the case of presenting and reinforcing stereotypes. While some research has been done on Islamophobic stereotypes in video-games, relatively little attention has been paid to the strategy genre. Stereotypes such as the “scimitar wielding warrior” or the “Sultan’s decadent harem” crop up in many strategy games. These stereotypes can be harmful or dangerous to Muslim minorities, and thus their inclusion in these strategy games is deserving of research. By performing a single- player content analysis of fourteen (14) strategy games, this thesis examines the frequency and nature of these stereotypes in depth.

    MANUAL WELCOME TO CRUSADER KINGS II: HORSE LORDS or professionals, history is a work in progress. For much of the modern era, the steppe nomads that led invasion after invasion in medieval Europe and Asia were seen as little F more than barbarian raiders. Though separated by centuries, the Mongols of Genghis Khan were lumped in with the Huns of Attila, and the triumphs of the Mongol and Turkic empires were simply reminders of the wild forces that lay outside of the borders of civilization. Scholarship over the last century has complicated the popular picture of the Mongols as il- literate and indifferent rulers. Though war on horseback was central to their culture, the clan politics of Karakorum were as high stakes as the backroom dealings in Constantinople. The steppe invaders proved adaptable to foreign cultures, foreign religions and foreign customs. This is now seen as less a sign of their own barbarism than evidence that the orderliness of their empires was paramount. 2 2 Crusader Kings II has done a lot over the last few years to add depth of gameplay to the pagan tribes of Europe, but we wanted to do something special for the Asian nomadic tribes, especially the Mongol and Turkic groups whose migrations and invasions transformed the landscape of history. The map of central Asia has been expanded. We have new clan management mechanics for these nomadic groups, special events and adventures for those family members that are sent abroad as mercenaries, and a bunch of new systems designed for ruling a nomadic people – some of which found their way into other core game systems for everyone.

The concepts I propose are historical accuracy to reflect well-established narratives and a high fidelity to factual data, and historical authenticity to reflect lesser known narratives and a more complex and sometimes abstract interpretation of history.     WELCOME TO CRUSADER KINGS II: CHARLEMAGNE harlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor, is one of the central figures in European history. A giant of a man, he was a great warrior, administrator and religious zealot who Cunified most of the great West and Central European kingdoms into one realm. The Holy Roman Empire linked the religious authority of the Pope with a great secular protector. The unity and stability he brought to Europe ushered in a Golden Age of culture and scholarship. Now you can relive his rise to power and eternal fame, or compete alongside him, in this new expansion for Crusader Kings II. The first thing you will notice about the game is that we have added almost another century of play. The grand campaign opens in 768 CE, the year that Charles I ascended to the Frankish throne. This is a very different world than the ones you will have seen in earlier versions of CK2. The Muslim conquests around the Mediterranean basin are still fresh. Charles Martel, the grandfather of Charlemagne and Hammer of God, stopped the Arab invaders at Tours only three decades earlier. Christianity has yet to get a foothold in most of Central and Eastern Europe, where a tribal system still dominates. And the Viking Age is not yet in full swing. Both Civilization V and Europa Universalis IV present an opportunity to examine a familiar concept, periodization, through the new lens of digital simulation. Author Keywords Periodization; historical strategy games; historiography; modding communities Introduction For historians and historical video game designers alike the division of historical time into “ages” or “eras” is a useful, even necessary exercise. For historians, such divisions provide coherence, structure, and narrative to an otherwise continuous flow of human experience. For designers of historical games, such periodization makes change over time easier to represent in the rational world of the game code. Although historians and game designers have different reasons for adopting the technique of periodization, both by necessity engage with the same historiographical arguments about periodization (and by extension engage their readers and players in those arguments). Civilization V and Europa Universalis IV, two historical strategy games, present conceptions of periodization and change over time which derive from both historiographical tradition and the rational necessities of the game algorithm.
