Thankfully, in doing so, I have avoided many of the transgressions that befell many young men in the early modern period, and my own bodily excesses have been constrained to an absolute minimum. It is fitting, however, when mentioning the word excess, that I am grateful to recall here the excessive kindness and support of an excessive number of people. Abstract 7 This dissertation argues for the reappraisal of Jacobean boy actors by acknowledging their status as youths. Focussing on the repertory of The Children of the Queen’s Revels and using the acting and playwriting career of Nathan Field as an extensive case-study, it argues, via an investigation into cultural and theatrical bodily excess, that the theatre was a profoundly significant space in which youth culture was shaped and problematised. In defining youth culture as a space for the assertion of an identity that is inherently performative, the theatre stages young men’s social lives to reflect the performativity of masculinity in early modern culture. Chapters One to Three focus on the body of Nathan Field by investigating the roles that he performed in the theatre to claim that the staging of bodily excess amounted to an effort to inculcate correct paths of masculinity. Chapters Four and Five offer detailed analysis of the plays written by Nathan Field, finding that Field was keen to champion positive aspects of youth culture and identity by reforming bodily excess on stage. Chapter One asserts that George Chapman’s Bussy D’Ambois (1603) identifies the protagonist’s excessive violence as a failure to adhere to humanist teachings; a sign that youth culture is dependent upon the lessons learnt in school, whereas Chapter Two finds that Eastward Ho (1605) condemns the monstrous youthful drunken body before encouraging the audience to value apprenticeship as a positive site of youth identity. Chapter Three argues that John Fletcher’s Faithful Shepherdess (1607) reveals a range of polluted young bodies to demonstrate the importance of moderating the humoral fluctuations of youth before Chapter Four finds Field to be a conservative dramatist who ridicules excess with explicit didactic intentions in his Woman is a Weathercock (1610) and Amends for Ladies (1611).

Gent and John Fletcher. As a political, religious and military figure in the middle of the first century AD this Celtic and regional queen of Norfolk is placed at the beginning of British history.     Early Theatre 15.1 (2012) Pamela Allen Brown ‘Cattle of this colour’: Boying the Diva in As You Like It Shakespeare may have written for an all-male stage, but his plays are full of women who relish acting. ‘Bring us to this sight, and you shall say / I’ll prove a busy actor in their play’ (3.4.54–5), says Rosalind, as eager as Bot- tom or Hamlet to get into the act.1 Why such stress on female theatricality on a womanless stage? My theory is that As You Like It and other plays show the imprint of the ground-breaking actresses who took the lead in Italian professional troupes decades before Shakespeare’s debut. A startling innova- tion when they appeared in Commedia dell’Arte companies in mid-century, women soon performed in scripted and improvised plays in every genre. A few directed their troupes and became international stars, sought after by royal patrons throughout Europe. News reached London from diplomats, travelers, and players, and in the 1570s Italian players appeared several times at Elizabeth’s court, culminating in the 1578 visit of an arte troupe that included actresses.2 English playwrights responded quickly to the challenge. From the late 1570s, writers created exotically histrionic ‘women’ who seize the stage to deliver passionate arias of love and despair, scheme with virtuosic flair, and display elegant wit and rhetorical sophistication. Major female roles grew longer than ever before, while expanding in range, significance, and com- plexity. Lyly, Kyd, and Marlowe placed unprecedented demands on the boy player, calling for displays of rhetorical mastery, feats of actorly control, and torrents of passion and frenzy.

It is to the Jonsonian utterances that the apostles of the Stratfordian faith always makeT their appeal. That faith we are told is based on the “irrefragable rock” of Ben Jonson’s testimony. Well, it was not so very long ago that we used to be told that the truth of a universal deluge and the preservation of mankind and animals of every kind and species, in Noah’s Ark, was established on the “impregnable rock” of Holy Scripture, and yet to-day we find even high Church digni taries—with whom Mr. J. M. Robertson would certainly be in entire agreement here—disavowing any belief in this interesting mythological tradition. Is it not, then, possible that the Jonsonian testi mony may prove no more “irrefragable” or “impregnable” than that of those old chronicles, which age-long tradition has ascribed to the authorship of “Moses”? As a distinguished writer, well-known both in the political and the literary world, has written to me, the difficulties in the way of the orthodox “Shakespearian” belief seem to be insuperable. Are the Jonsonian utterances of such weight as to outweigh them all? I reply, put Jonson in one scale and all the difficulties and improbabilities — if not impossibilities — of the “Stratfordian” hypothesis in the other, and old Ben will kick the beam. Now let us briefly consider this Jonsonian testimony.

Ben Jonson’s Works, published in 1616, included all his comedies written that far, and meant an important precedent which helped to establish drama as lit- erary kind comparable to the rest of literature. Before that date, drama was regarded as un- worthy of the name of literature, and Jonson was the first to give it its new dignity. His comedies written after 1616 were usually published immediately after they were acted. Jonson’s theoretical interests were an expression of his intellectual aristocratism and his realistic temperament. He took pride in being able to create comedies according to the best scientific rules, and felt superior to those who made them by sheer talent. Jonson was the only theoretician among the English Renaissance dramatists, but although he was ready to fight for his rules, his application of them was broad and elastic. In his comedies there are many departures from classical models, often modified by his keen observation of every- day English life. The theory he adhered to was an abstract and rigid kind of realism, which in his practice was transformed by his gift of observation and his moral zeal into a truly realistic and satirical comic vision of life.     2952 Early Theatre 20.2 (2017), 77–98 http://dx.doi.org/10.12745/et.20.2.2952 John Kuhn Sejanus, the King’s Men Altar Scenes, and the Theatrical Production of Paganism This article traces the lineage of the popular performance set-piece of the ‘oracular altar scene’ from its inception in Jonson’s Sejanus through its frequent reuse by the King’s Men and their imitators later in the century. By doing so, it demonstrates how material practices of reuse in the seventeenth-century theatre helped shape the produc- tion of popular knowledge about the nature of ‘pagan’ ritual and its practitioners in the Stuart era of intensified antiquarian discovery and colonial expansion. The fifth act of Ben Jonson’s Sejanus, a Jacobean tragedy set in decadent imper- ial Rome, contains a striking moment of intersection between antiquarianism and performance, as the play’s scheming, eponymous favourite agrees to propiti- ate a statue of the goddess Fortuna, grudgingly seeking divine advice about his political fortunes. Accompanied by the music of flutes and trumpets, a priest incants lines translated from Seneca while performing complex rituals of lustra- tion (washing his hands), libation (eating and administering honey and milk to the participants), and propitiation (placing milk, honey, and burning poppy on the altar bearing Fortuna’s statue), all as Sejanus looks on. Surprisingly, these distinctly alien, non-Christian religious rites produce true future knowledge: the hitherto sessile statue of the goddess (probably a company member in a statue costume) miraculously becomes animated and turns her face away. The predic- tion implied by this silent rejection — that Sejanus has lost her favour and his luck has run out — is quickly vindicated for the audience in the next scene, when the favourite’s downfall begins.

    Music and Song in Plays Acted by Children's Companies during the English Renaissance Michael Shapiro In recent years, an impressive amount of scholarship has concerned itself with music and song and their uses in Shakespeare's plays. In addition to the earlier studies of Naylor, Noble, and Cowling, we are now fortunate to have John H. Long's and Frederick Sternfeld's more specialized studies of the uses of music and song in the comedies and tragedies respectively, Peter Seng's useful compendium of information on the songs, and John Cutts's edition of songs used in the later plays. Although we can only rejoice over this signifi- cant body of work, it has created the impression that Shakespeare's plays are typical of the period in their uses of music and song. While this hypothesis may turn out to be valid, it cannot be tested until scholars have thoroughly in- vestigated the uses of music and song in plays written by other dramatists and in plays performed by other acting companies during the same period. In fact, a cursory view of English Renaissance drama suggests, if anything, the atypicality of Shakespeare's uses of music and song. For example, the plays acted by the companies of child actors which flourished between 1599 and 1612 are richer in music and song than are the plays written by Shakespeare and others for adult companies during the same period, and often use music and song in radically different ways. Moreover, the musical conventions in the plays acted by children's troupes were developed in and for small, indoor "private" theaters, and were often adopted by adult troupes after 1609 when they began to move to those theaters from their large, open-roofed "public" theaters.

    Early Theatre 10.1 (2007) ANDREW GURR The Work of Elizabethan Plotters, and 2 The Seven Deadly Sins It would, to put it mildly, be nice to know more about the backstage oper- ations of a playing company like the Chamberlain’s Men or the Admiral’s in the later 1590s. About the company that Shakespeare joined in 1594 we are unlikely ever to know much more than the few hard facts now current can tell us. But given Henslowe’s Diary with its intricate records of the day-by- day operations of Edward Alleyn and his company, there is better reason to hope for some clarification of the extraordinary processes that helped fifteen or more players to put six different plays on stage every week and to run a repertory consisting of more than thirty plays each year. Regrettably little about that uniquely high-speed process has come out so far, and this study of the backstage book-keeper and stage management will not take it very much further. But, as the chronic optimists say, every little helps. The Admiral’s company must have had several helpers for the staging of their plays besides the costumiers, to whom the Henslowe papers note pay- ments, and the property men. The difficulties of reading the Diary start there. Were the backstage workers employed by Henslowe himself as owner of the playhouse the company rented, or were they members of the company, hired and paid by the sharers? None of the stage hands is named in the accounts, though there are some bonds signed by hired men who were players.

The light-hearted confrontation staged in the opening scene of Francis Beaumont’s The Knight of the Burning Pestle, first performed around 1607, is typical in many ways of the material dramatised between 1603 and 1613 by the Children of the Queen’s Revels. The Queen’s Revels was the most enduring and influential of the Jacobean children’s companies. Its plays are ambitious and innovative, even avant-garde; its relationship with the audience was informal and, occasionally, combative, with a tendency either to risk confusing spectators with metatheatrical or generic experi- mentation, or to overstep the bounds of what was considered acceptable in political or social satire. Staging a play like The Knight of the Burning Pestle, which opens with this striking and potentially baffling metatheat- rical intervention, was a risky move, but the Queen’s Revels were accustomed to financial, social and political hazard. After the reestablishment in 1599 of the Children of Paul’s, a company that took its boy actors from the ranks of the Cathedral choir school, the Children of the Chapel began to perform at the Blackfriars theatre in 1600.

He is invariably depicted as a man with a ruff and a neatly clipped beard and, if shown in fuller profile, wearing the doublet and tights that were thought to have been de rigeurat Elizabeth's court. There is no particular distinction between the images produced for a scholarly audience and a more popular one.
