  • B I O G R a P H Y
B I O G R A P H Y Rita's credentials are the stuff of legend. After earning a degree in art at Florida State University, the Tennessee native decided to give music a shot before settling into a career as an art teacher. She moved to Memphis and was soon singing jingles, demos and background vocals for a number of area bands. Among them was a husband and wife duo, Delaney & Bonnie. When the pair signed their record deal, Rita suddenly found herself on big-time pop music's leading edge. Her reputation as an A-list backup singer spread quickly. Joe Cocker enlisted her in that role and as a featured soloist on his Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. (Rita performed a song she'd co-written, “Superstar,” which would later be a huge hit for The Carpenters.) Work with other rock royalty followed, including tours and recordings with Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Leon Russell and Stephen Stills. In 1971, A&M Records moguls Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss signed her to the label, and one of the most enduring solo careers in all of music was underway. Rita released more than a dozen albums in the years to follow, including 1978's multi-platinum Anytime... Anywhere. Several of her singles would become classics; “We're All Alone,” “Higher And Higher” and “The Way You Do The Things You Do” all qualify as “career” songs. She’s performed with high-profile pals like George Harrison, Roger Waters, Robbie Robertson and Jimmy Buffett. In 1973, Rita married singer, songwriter and actor Kris Kristofferson.

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

  • After Ten Years During Which She Bore Witness to Some of Her Life's Greatest
After ten years during which she bore witness to some of her life’s greatest joys and deepest sorrows—and the publication of her acclaimed 2015 memoir, Delta Lady–Rita Coolidge is back with Safe in the Arms of Time, her 18th solo album and a reaffirmation of her indomitable spirit and unquenchable creative thirst. “This is the best record I’ve ever done,” Rita declares. “I’m extremely proud of it.” Safe in the Arms of Time marks Rita’s triumphant return to the songwriting that gave the world her shimmering (and still uncredited) “piano coda” to Derek & the Dominoes’ “Layla.” Three of the album’s 12 songs were co-written by Rita and draw inspiration from her personal journey. “I’ve written so many songs assuming a role like an actor, but this time I got to write from experience,” Rita says. Her enthusiasm for sharing her life stories was infectious. Rita, former Tom Petty drummer Stan Lynch and Joe Hutto composed “You Can Fall in Love,” about reconnecting with an old flame, minutes after meeting as all were swept up in an irresistible creative current – “the song was done and demoed in five hours,” marvels Rita. “You Can Fall in Love” embodies one of Safe in the Arms of Time’s compelling themes: It’s never too late. “People need to have an awakening that you can fall in love at any age and it will feel right, like you’re 15,” Rita says. “I felt it was important to talk about that because so many people give up finding the love of their lives after a certain age, and it never has to be.

Listener’s Guide To “WDAM Radio’s History Of James Bond” You have security clearance to enjoy “WDAM Radio’s History Of James Bond.” Classified – until now, this is the most comprehensive top secret dossier of ditties from James Bond television and film productions ever assembled. WDAM Radio’s undercover record researchers have uncovered all the opening title themes, as well as “secondary songs” and various end title themes worth having. Our secret musicology agents also have gathered intelligence on virtually every known and verifiable* song that was submitted to and rejected by the various James Bond movie producers as proposed theme music. All of us at the station hope you will enjoy this musical license to thrill.** Rock on. Radio Dave *There is a significant amount of dubious data on Wikipedia and YouTube with respect to songs that were proposed, but not accepted, for various James Bond films. Using proprietary alga rhythms (a/k/a Radio Dave’s memory and WDAM Radio’s Groove Yard archives), as well as identifying obvious inconsistencies on several postings purporting to present such claims, we have revoked the license of such songs to be included in this collection. (For instance, two sites claim Elvis Presley songs that were included in two of his movies were originally proposed to the James Bond producers – not true.) **Watch for updates to this dossier as future James Bond films are issued, as well as additional “rejected songs” to existing films are identified and obtained via our ongoing overt and covert musicology surveillance activities. Album of the Week: The Orwells’ Disgraceland Rock ‘n’ Roll from Chicago What do you get when a group of kids in their late teens and early 20s grab a bunch of instruments, turn the amps up to 11 and join forces with a lead singer who looks like Robert Plant? You get a rip- roaring, brain-melting rock ‘n’ roll band from Chicago called The Orwells. They have their second album, Disgraceland, out this week and it’s a doozy of a record. Each track has the right amount of grit, angst and devil-may-care attitude to give your ears exactly what they need. If Disgraceland doesn’t kick popular music on its ass in 2014, I might actually lose faith in humanity. It’s that good. Despite being so young, this quintet has been making music together since high school. Seven years later, you could consider them music vets even though they can’t legally drink. What impresses me the most about The Orwells’ new album is the perfect combination of production quality and powerful songs. Ranging from tales about innocent teenage love, to dramatic suicide and one night stands, Disgraceland is as rock ‘n’ roll as it gets. After listening to this beauty, I can’t imagine a better album coming out in 2014. Racist owners of sports franchises, angry middle-aged men throwing rocks at Ferraris, neo-Nazi reality TV one-hit-nevers and people talking about how World War III is going to happen by the end of the decade. We live on a pretty crazy, messed-up planet.

  • "He Strikes Like Thun-N-N-Nder-R-R-R
“He Strikes Like Thun-n-n-nder-r-r-r-BALL-L-L-L-L-L!” The Place of the James Bond Theme Song Mark R. McDermott Existing almost completely outside the narrative of the two dozen James Bond movies, the theme song played over the opening credits has served as one of the movies’ major promotional tools. In a world before Don LaFontaine-narrated trailers that took up half an hour of a theatrical program, national movie ads piled onto television networks’ “must-see-TV” Thursday nights, and a plague of magazines, cable channels and web sites devoted to covering movies before their release; the song from a Bond movie “of the same name” on heavy radio rotation was an avenue to free publicity. When these songs were effective, they conveyed something of the mood of the movies, or offered a tantalizing glimpse of Bond, his villain of the day, or the dystopian world in which Bond operates. During the greatest popularity of the Roger Moore movies, the theme songs became more about Bond’s sexual prowess. The later themes, though no longer as popular on American radio, continue to illuminate Bond’s world, and have remained one of the many repeated memes of the movies. Movies and Music History Given the apparently easy synergy that has existed between feature films and soundtrack albums during the Vinyl and CD eras, it can be hard to understand that it took so long to happen. An ad hoc arrangement between record companies and movie studios can be found even before the advent of talkies: pop chart maven Joel Whitburn documented the brief popularity of “Poor Pauline” by Arthur Fields (1915), a recording of the accompaniment composed for the 1914 serial The Perils of Pauline.
