2018-19 CALENDAR DISTRICT AT A GLANCE A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

Dear Families:

Newfield Elementary School We are looking forward to an exciting new school year. It is always excit- Vicky Volpicelli, Principal ing to see children learn and grow academically, emotionally, and socially Grades Pre-K through 5 as they experience new adventures in their classrooms. It is also exciting Phone: 564-9955, ext. 1145 to be at the beginning of a major renovation project. Things will be a little Fax: 330-9001 messy and topsy-turvy for a while but, just like with life, keeping the goal in mind will help us get through it. The reward will be a safe secondary gym floor, classroom and work environments that are neither too hot or too cold, and a beautiful new auditorium that can accommodate our com- munity and school events. Thank you for your patience as we go through Newfield Middle School this process. Here’s How You Can Improve Your Child’s Attendance 1) Talk with your child about the importance of attending school regularly. 2) Avoid scheduling family trips during school hours. 3) Help your child stay healthy by eating nutritious food and getting enough sleep and exercise. 4) Discuss with your child what is happening at school. 5) Support school rules and consequences. 6) Show your child why education is important. 7) Set a good example for your child.

Communicable Diseases Parents are asked to please consider their child’s health condition each day. Students should be kept home if a fever exists (and for 24 hours after a fever is gone), there is a persistent cough, an upset stomach, a suspicious skin condition, or any other health abnormality. It is important to remember that the welfare of all our students must be considered.

Communication When a child is going to be absent from school, we ask that parents call the school nurse and let her know. A written excuse from parents is necessary when children have been absent or have appointments during the day as these must be kept on file per NYSED regulations.

Emergency Telephone Numbers The importance of EMERGENCY NUMBERS cannot be stressed enough. With parents away from home during the day, it is essential to be able to reach someone in case of an emergency. For this reason, we ask you to complete the Student Information Sheet each school year. Please notify the school office of any changes in contact people or phone numbers throughout the year.

Regular Attendance All students are expected to be in attendance. Newfield School District requires stu- dents to attend at least 85% of the scheduled classes in a course of study in order to be eligible for course credit at the high school level.

Medications Absolutely no medication can be administered to a child without a note from parents and the doctor ordering the medication. Medication must be in original containers and brought to school by a parent or guardian (not a student). No exceptions can be made to this rule.

TITLE IX/SECTION 504 Newfield Central School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, creed, religion, marital status, sex, age, sexual orientation or disability in admissions, participation or employment. Questions or concerns regarding these regulations should be directed to the Superintendent of Schools, Title IX Co- ordinator, or Cheryl Jackson, Section 504 Coordinator, at Newfield Central School, 247 Main Street, Newfield, NY. Grievance proce- dures to be followed if there is a violation of this policy can be found on the District website at http://www.newfieldschools.org September 2018 Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday

In the event that it is necessary to close school because of an emergency such as impassable roads, as many of the following local radio and TV stations as possible will be called: WSKG, WICB, WHCU, WYXL, WQNY, Z95.5, WENY, WSYR and WBNG. Parents will also be notified using the au- tomated School Messenger system. You may also check on the school website or set up your own automatic notification at www.cancellations.com. The decision to close will be made as early as pos- sible so that parents can plan for the care of their children. The Day Care and Before/After School Programs will not be open on snow days.

On occasion it may be necessary to close after school is in session. In that case, these same notification procedures will be used. DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL as that ties up the phone lines and makes it impossible to contact bus drivers, radio stations and other emergency personnel.

Please have plans in place for these situations. Trying to make arrangments at the last minute can be upsetting for everyone.

ASBESTOS NOTIFICATION The Newfield Central School District asbestos management plans are available for review in the offices of Steve Yaple (ext. 4129) during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

It is important that parents take the time to participate in Parent- Teacher Conferences because they are one of the best ways for parents to become involved in their childen’s education. Some planning prior to the conference can make the session more productive:

1) Make a list of questions you would like to discuss with your child’s teacher(s).

2) Both parents should discuss questions and comments for the conference beforehand, especially if only one parent will be able to attend.

3) Be on time to ensure that you have enough time to discuss your questions. If you cannot keep the scheduled appointment, please contact the school.

4) Make notes of the teacher’s comments for reference. Maintain a file of all your child’s important educational records.

5) Be sure to mention things about your child that his or her teacher may find useful and that will help the teacher to better understand and teach your child.

Sometimes it is hard to know the correct course of action when a question or problem arises re- garding your child’s education. While it is often easiest to discuss the situation with your neigh- bor or your Facebook friends, chances are they will not be able to help resolve the issue.

If you have a question or con- cern involving the school, try to obtain satisfactory resolution by first contacting the person closest to the situation, i.e. your child’s teacher for a classroom issue. If a solution is not reached at that level, the building administra- tor, and then the superintendent should be contacted. For other areas such as transportation or athletics, the same guidelines should be followed.

Should you need to communicate on a broad issue regarding school policy or budget decisions that do not involve specific personnel, a time has been set aside at each regular board meeting for this purpose (Privilege of the Floor).

Communication is the key to suc- cessfully working together. We do want to hear your comments and appreciate your insights. December 2018 Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday

Effective July 1, 2001, NYS Education Law, Section 409-H, required that all public schools provide noti- fication to all parents, faculty and staff regarding the potential use of pesticides periodically throughout the school year.

The Newfield Central School District has adopted an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Plan and Policy. This plan will rely on sanitation, habitat modification, monitoring and the use of non-toxic and least-toxic products and techniques to control pests, rather than the use of potentially dangerous chemical pesticides.

According to the law, the following pesticide applications are NOT subject to prior notification require- ments:

• if the school remains unoccupied for a continuous 72 hours following an application; • the use of anti-microbial products; • the use of nonvolatile rodenticides in tamper-resistant bait stations in areas inaccessible to children; • the use of nonvolatile insecticidal baits in tamper-resistant bait stations in areas inaccessible to children; • the use of silica gels and other nonvolatile ready-to-use pastes, foams or gels in areas inacces- sible to children; • the use of boric acid and disodium octaborate tetrahydrate; • the application of EPA-designated biopesticides; • the application of EPA-designated exempt materials under 40CFR152.25; • the use of aerosol products with a directed spray in containers of 18 fluid ounces intended for venomous spiders, bees, wasps and hornets.

In keeping with the District’s IPM plan, no pesticide applications are planned during the 2018-19 school year that would fall under the notification requirements. However, the District is required to maintain a list of parents, faculty and staff who wish to receive 48-hour prior written notification of any appli- cable pesticide notifications. In the event of an emergency application necessary to protect against an imminent threat to human health, a good faith effort will be made to supply written notification to those on the 48-hour prior notification list.

If you would like to receive 48-hour prior notification in the event of a pesticide application that would fall under the notification requirements, please complete the form below and return it to the District Office, Newfield Central School District, 247 Main Street, Newfield, NY 14867 or fax it to (607) 564- 0055.

Please feel free to contact Mr. Steven Yaple, the Newfield Central School pesticide representative at 564-9955, ext. 4129, or [email protected] for further information on these requirements.

One of the most important services any citizen can give to their community is to serve as a member of a local school board. It is a demanding office, car- ried on in the public eye using public funds. Decisions made by a Board of Education have long-standing effects on the quality of life in a community and the development of skills and talents of its youth.

If you are interested in running for the Board of Education, contact the District Clerk at extension 4140 for information on vacancies, petitions and re- quirements.

The McKinney-Vento program is designed to address the problems that homeless children and youth have faced in enrolling, attending, and succeeding in school. All students who are homeless have the following rights:

• Equal access to the same free, appropriate public education, including a public preschool education, as other children and youth.

• Homeless students may not be separated from the mainstream school environment and are entitled to transportation to and from the school of origin.

• Transportation must be provided, at the request of the parent or guardian, to and from the school of origin (some limits ap- ply).

• Immediate school enrollment, regardless of disputes arising over school selection or placement.

• Placement determinations must be made on the basis of the “best interest” of the student (i.e. keeping student in the school of origin).

• A local liaison must be designated for homeless children and youth. In Newfield, that person is Cheryl Jackson, Director of Special Programs.

• Educational programs for homeless students must be adminis- tered in a nondiscriminatory manner.

• Any student who experiences homelessness and who is required to attend summer school to advance to the next grade, or to graduate on time with his/her peers, must be provided the op- portunity to do so.
