    Cruising Route: Oban and west Argyll to the Antrim coast and Belfast Lough This is a beautiful cruising ground with a combination of inshore and offshore sailing amid wonderful and varied scenery. The channels among the southern Hebrides offer a number of alternative routes. From Oban, the track inside the islands leads either down the Sound of Luing to Crinan or further south, or else via Cuan Sound to Kilmelford or Craobh. In these sounds – and indeed almost everywhere on this route – the tidal stream is the first consid- eration in passage planning. The tide runs very fast in Cuan Sound and in the Dorus Mor leading to Crinan, and at a significant rate in the Sound of Luing, gradually lessening down the Sound of Jura. Loch Craignish and Ardfern offer a pleasant and scenic side-trip. There are visitors’ moorings at Craighouse and Gigha. An alternative route south from Oban is offshore, via Colonsay and the Sound of Islay, with Port Askaig providing a possible stopover. The Sound of Islay is also a tidal gate, with five knot tides. It is worth remembering that working these tides to advantage can result in very fast passages! The marina at Port Ellen is only a few miles to the west whether coming east or west of Jura. An alternative route south from Oban is offshore, via Colonsay and the Sound of Mull Oban Islay, with Port Askaig providing a possible stopover.     They Came From Tiree by Gene Donald Lamont CHAPTER THREE THE MACLEAN YEARS Under the Lordship of the Isles The Macleans first gained a foothold in Tiree in the first half of the 14th century, when Iain Dubh Maclean of Duart, fourth chief of Clan Maclean, was named as bailie of the southern part of Tiree and as constable of Isleburgh Castle. A charter was issued in 1344 to this effect, but it was probably only confirming what Iain Dubh had held for several years. The bailery of Tiree was comprised of Mannal and Heylipol, and possibly some adjacent territory, while Isleburgh was the fortress of the Lord of the Isles in Loch an Eilean in Heylipol. These were regranted to Lachlan Lubanach by Donald, Lord of the Isles, in 1390. In the beginning such property was only held at the will of the Lord of the Isles, but over time became a heriditary grant. The Macleans of Duart held Isleburgh Castle and the orignal land of the bailery of Tiree until they were lost to the Campbells in the latter part of the 17th century, except for a brief period, of say 1492-1509. During those years Maclean of Lochbuie, who also held property on the island, took advantage of the fact that Maclean of Duart was out of favor with the government and managed to be appointed the bailie of the southern part of Tiree. For a while both held the same office, which exacerbated the rivalry between these two branches of the clan, but the pendulum swung back to the Duart group’s favor very shortly.

The appearance of the mason work shows that different parts of the structure had been erected at different dates. ABSTRACT: This paper presents recently collected swath bathymetry from the Firth of Lorn. 553 km2 of data were collected during 2012–2013 as part of the INIS Hydro (Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland Hydrographic Survey) programme. The area proves to consist of bedrock-dominated seabed, divided into narrow, stratigraphically- constrained and glacially-over-deepened basins. The bedrock is composed of late Proterozoic Dalradian metasediments overlain unconformably by Old Red Sandstone (ORS) sediments and lavas of ?Silurian-age. The central region of the Firth of Lorn is dominated by a vertical cliff, up to 150 m high and extending for approximately 24 km. This feature, here termed the Insh Fault, may have originated as a Dalradian extensional fault, been reactivated as an ORS feature and now forms a fault-line scarp with resistant ORS rocks on the downthrown side, flanking the more deeply eroded metasediments exposed in the basin. Tertiary intrusives are common, in particular, swarms of Paleocene dolerite dykes exposed on the sediment-free bedrock surfaces, and can be traced for many kilometres.
