Will there be a Triple Crown Winner this year? Mike E. Smith on Justify, Kentucky Derby On May 5, Justify won the Kentucky Derby. There are 2 more thoroughbred horse races that he has to enter and win in order to win the Triple Crown of thoroughbred Racing ... the Preakness and the Belmont. Can he do it? What are his chances? The three races that make up the Triple Crown are the (1) Kentucky Derby, the (2) Preakness Stakes, and the (3) Belmont Stakes. Kentucky Derby races began in 1875; Preakness races began in 1870; and the Belmont began in 1867. But in all of those years since these races began only 12 horses have won all three. THURSDAY, APRIL 30, 2020 CHURCHILL BACKSTRETCH SANTA ANITA PLANS TO ISSUE CONDITION BOOK THURSDAY by Dan Ross TO OPEN MAY 11, Santa Anita will put out a condition book April 30 which will target May 15 for the resumption of live racing under strict OPENING DATE FOR protocols with no fans present, according to a letter issued by track management Wednesday. 4-DAY RACE WEEKS TBA The TDN obtained a copy of the letter, which was sent to Greg Avioli, the President and CEO of the Thoroughbred Owners of California; Alan Balch, the Executive Director of California Thoroughbred Trainers; and Darrell Haire, Regional Manager of the Jockeys' Guild. Officials at Santa Anita said that they would have no comment in time for the deadline for the story deadline. "Santa Anita Park will be issuing a condition book on Thursday, April 30, targeting May 15 for the resumption of live racing under strict protocols, including the exclusion of spectators," the letter, which is signed by Aidan Butler, the Executive Director of California Racing Operations for the Stronach Group, reads. NE afternoon at Bowie in the autumn of 1923, William O Woodward Sr. asked Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons if he would like to train the Belair Stud horses. Mr. Fitz said that he not only would be pleased to, but would be highly honored. Thus began a happy association that lasted till the death of Mr. Woodward in September, 1953. Mr. Fitz's first winner for Belair Stud, and incidentally the first horse he saddled for the stable, was a 2-year-old chestnut filly by Jim Gaffney-*Medora II, named Beatrice, which led all the way in the last race of the afternoon on April 30, 1924, the second day of the Jamaica spring meeting.
