We are still getting a trickle of new members joining though, so it’s not all bad! Our branch AGM was held at the end of February and we have some new faces on the committee for the coming year. Welcome to you all. It’s always nice to have some fresh committee members with new ideas for the running of the branch. Congratulations to our Marlborough member, Jane Laing #6361, on being elected to Nat Com. I’m sure she will do well. Thanks also to Kevin Bright #7124 for attending the National AGM in Masterton in my place as I am unable to go. On another subject, Can-Am Spyders seem to be the bikes of the future, if you can call them bikes. I know they are registered as a car, but the feeling is still there. We have seven very satisfied Spyder owners in our branch now. There are even rumours of another couple of members contemplating the idea. “Watch this space”. Our Back To Basics Rally was held at the end of February on a farm at Kaituna, with a large woolshed and a great rural setting. Numbers attending were down from previous years. The incoming committee will have to look at what we do in the future. I know the southern members who come from Christchurch always look forward to coming up. The Sunday rides and Retreads rides on Thursdays are still just as popular as ever. The only thing that affects good turnouts is the odd drop of rain. I know “Tin Tops” have been used on some of the Thursday rides in recent times. Our monthly dinners at different venues have started up once again after a break over the Xmas/New Year period. I know some of the members just love to go out so they don’t have to cook that night!

I have just Icompleted my very important long term goal of completing 100 marathons before I’m 60-years- old on the original course that Pheidippides ran from Marathon to Athens, Greece to inform his Army of victory over the Persians. I have four motorbikes; three Triumphs (1998 Thunderbird, 2011 America & 2012 Storm) and a 2013 Moto Guzzi V7 Cafe racer. I can’t afford to have all four bikes registered all the time, so register each one for three months. I ride my current registered bike to all my NZ marathons subject to weather, which gives me a great deal of pleasure as well as a challenge battling fatigue after a marathon riding home again. I have run the Auckland Marathon and the Lydiard Legend, also in Auckland, many times and ridden my motorbikes up and back in some very miserable weather, including snow through the Desert Road. Have I fallen off? The answer is yes, but not seriously enough to stop me continuing my journey to get home and ride again to the next race. I have run all over the world on all seven continents, twice including Antarctica. I have also hired and rode bikes in a lot of countries. In 2011, I ran New York Marathon, then hired a Harley Davidson and rode down the coast to Miami whilst my long suffering partner, Rachel, who loves classic cars, not bikes, hired a brand new red Mustang convertible with 400 miles on the clock.
