Chapter – 7 : Conservation & Heritage Management IL&FS ECOSMART Chapter – 7 Conservation & Heritage Management CHAPTER - 7 CONSERVATION & HERITAGE MANAGEMENT 7.1 INTRODUCTION Heritage Resource Conservation and Management imperatives for Delhi The distinctive historical pattern of development of Delhi, with sixteen identified capital cities1 located in different parts of the triangular area between the Aravalli ridge and the Yamuna river, has resulted in the distribution of a large number of highly significant heritage resources, mainly dating from the 13th century onwards, as an integral component within the contemporary city environment. (Map-1) In addition, as many of these heritage resources (Ashokan rock edict, two World Heritage Sites, most ASI protected monuments) are closely associated with the ridge, existing water systems, forests and open space networks, they exemplify the traditional link between natural and cultural resources which needs to be enhanced and strengthened in order to improve Delhi’s environment. (Map -2) 7.1.1 Heritage Typologies – Location and Significance These heritage resources continue to be of great significance and relevance to any sustainable development planning vision for Delhi, encompassing a vast range of heritage typologies2, including: 1. Archaeological sites, 2. Fortifications, citadels, different types of palace buildings and administrative complexes, 3. Religious structures and complexes, including Dargah complexes 4. • Revival of Hauz Khas Lake in Delhi: Approaches to Urban Water Resource Management in India
Journal of Management and Sustainability; Vol. 6, No. 4; 2016 ISSN 1925-4725 E-ISSN 1925-4733 Published by Canadian Center of Science and Education Revival of Hauz Khas Lake in Delhi: Approaches to Urban Water Resource Management in India Deya Roy1 1 Centre for New Perspectives, New Delhi, India Correspondence: Deya Roy, Centre for New Perspectives, New Delhi, India. Tel: 91-989-118-8441. E-mail: [email protected] Received: August 12, 2016 Accepted: September 29, 2016 Online Published: November 25, 2016 doi:10.5539/jms.v6n4p73 URL: http://dx.doi.org/10.5539/jms.v6n4p73 Abstract The decline of urban water bodies in India needs to be arrested for sustainable water management in rapidly expanding Indian cities. Reuse of water after partial recycling can reduce environmental stress. Delhi, the Indian capital, has a number of surviving water storage structures built by successive rulers over centuries to tackle water shortage in the summer. In modern Delhi, a fourteen million plus city, water is supplied through technological networks, hastening the decline of the old water storage structures. The old lakes are choked with filth and the step-wells are heaps of rubble. The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) have undertaken a project to revive a 700 year-old water body, lying dry for decades, the Hauz Khas Lake, with treated sewage water. The idea was to raise the groundwater table and restore the natural environment of the lake, a past habitat for water birds. This paper attempts to evaluate the immediate impact and the long-term sustainability of the effort through discussions with technical personnel, field observations and interviews with local residents.

It was part of Siri, the second medieval city of India of the Delhi Sultanate of Allauddin Khilji Dynasty (1296–1316). Madrasa Madrasa Established in 1352, the Madrasa was one of the leading institutions of Islamic learning in the Delhi Sultanate. It was also considered the largest and best equipped Islamic seminary anywhere in the world. There were three main Madrasa's in Delhi during Firoz Shah's time. One of them was the Firoz Shahi madrasa at Hauz Khas. After the sack of Baghdad, Delhi became the most important place in the world for Islamic education. The village surrounding the Madarsa was also called Tarababad (city of joy). The madrasa structure has an innovative design. It was built in L-Shape as one contiguous structure on the south and east edges of the reservoir complex. Firoz Shah Tomb Firoz Shah, who established the tomb, ascended the throne in 1351 when he was middle aged, as the third ruler of the Tughlaq dynasty and ruled till 1388. He was considered a well-liked ruler. His wife was a Hindu lady. Feroz Shah died at the age of ninety due to infirmities caused by three years of illness between 1385 and 1388.

KM in the National Capital Territory of Delhi is the second largest city of India. Urban Green Spaces in Delhi Benefits of History and Geography Shape of things in a city are, to a very large extent, an outcome of its geographical location, interplay of eco-political realities over time and administrative and planning rigor that goes into its development at various phases of its evolution. From Urban Forestry perspective Delhi had 3 things going for it: 1. Location at the northern fringe of Aravali Ranges 2. Yamuna flows through the city. 3. Inhabited since 50 BC. Major center of political power since 1206 AD. Declared capital of India in 1911AD. At the fringe of Aravali Mountain Ranges Aravali mountain ranges in western India run app. 300 miles from northeast to southwest across Rajasthan state. Towards the north it continues as rocky ridges and isolated hills into Haryana ending into Delhi. Aravali Mountain Ranges : Downhill Human impact has degraded the natural environment in Aravalis.
