AND FEATURING The TELACU Scholars

FRIDAY, JUNE 5, 2015 JW MARRIOTT AT L.A. LIVE! PLATINUM BALLROOM 900 WEST OLYMPIC BOULEVARD LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA 90015 ABOUT TELACU

TELACU was established in 1968 as a pioneering institution committed to service, empowerment, advancement, and the creation of self-sufficiency. For the past 47 years, TELACU has partnered with committed people like you who make the American Dream live on in the communities we serve.

In TELACU’s early days, Dr. David C. Lizárraga and his management team devised a unique business model for community development. The model relies on the requirement that each and every business TELACU owns and operates supports a double bottom line—profitability that is inseparable from social impact. Quality, affordable homes are developed for first-time homeowners, and beautiful residential complexes are constructed and operated for families and senior citizens. New community assets in the form of schools, infrastructure, shopping centers, and municipal facilities are built, creating well-paying jobs for local residents. Responsive financial institutions are managed to provide access to capital for small business owners and hardworking families.

Recognizing that few of our Latino young people were graduating from high school and even fewer BOARD OF DIRECTORS from college, Dr. Lizárraga founded the TELACU JAY CANDELARIA Education Foundation in 1983 to address this critical JOSE ELIZONDO obstacle to the social and economic advancement of JAMES L. HODGES our community. DR. MICHAEL LIZÁRRAGA BRIAN O’NEILL In partnership with friends of TELACU, including CARMEN O. PEREZ donors, corporate sponsors, and our network of ALEX SOTOMAYOR colleges and universities, the Foundation provides scholarships to hundreds of college students in SENIOR EXECUTIVE STAFF California, Illinois, and each year. DR. DAVID C. LIZÁRRAGA Nearly all of these Scholars earn their degree. The DR. MICHAEL LIZÁRRAGA Foundation also annually serves an additional 1,600 PAUL SAMUEL young people, nursing students and veterans, GERALD BARHAM ensuring through our highly effective educational JAY BELL programs that these Scholars stay in school, graduate JASMINE BORREGO and go on to pursue post-secondary education. JOHN CLEM VELMA DE LA ROSA The men and women of TELACU consider it a ANA GONZALEZ PRISCILLA LIZÁRRAGA privilege to work every day in serving, empowering, TOM PROVENCIO advancing and creating self-sufficiency in our JOSE VILLALOBOS communities—communities we build with faithful partners like you.

2 TELACU EDUCATION FOUNDATION WELCOME We are honored to welcome you to TELACU’s 32nd Annual Building the Dream Gala, Presented by TOYOTA!

Last month, the Lizárraga Family had the great privilege of traveling to New York City where David received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. Presented to only 100 Americans each year, this prestigious award celebrates the accomplishments of individuals who exemplify the American immigrant experience.

Our family was humbled indeed to see our man receive his medal on Ellis Island, the iconic gateway where so many immigrants first crossed the threshold of our nation in their pursuit of the American Dream. As we listened to the playing of our National Anthem and stood in the Great Hall where 12 million people from foreign lands gained entrance to our country, we were overwhelmed with gratitude for all those who made this singularly significant moment possible through so many sacrifices made on our behalf.

For more than three decades, partners like you have made the American Dream possible for thousands of TELACU Scholars. These young people stand at another gateway to that Dream—the powerful gateway of education. Through the selfless sacrifice of your financial resources, valuable time and incomparable wisdom, you have generously provided the access point for additional generations of immigrants to participate in the American Dream.

Tonight, we celebrate that Dream in the lives of our TELACU Scholars, and especially in the example of the first Latino President pro Tempore in over 130 years, The Honorable Kevin de León. Like so many of our Scholars, Senator de León was the first in his family to graduate from high school and college. His commitment to creating greater citizenship opportunities and justice for immigrant families led to his organization of the largest civil rights march in California history. In gratitude for his contributions to our great state, TELACU is proud to present to Senator Kevin de León our organization’s highest recognition, the TELACU “CREO” Award.

And with equal gratitude to all of you who remain committed to making the American Dream live on in the life of every TELACU Scholar…

¡Muchísimas Gracias!

ND 32 ANNUAL BUILDING THE DREAM GALA 3 ABOUT THE FOUNDATION

Through the generous investments of our network of committed partners— corporations, individuals, and educational institutions—annually the TELACU Education Foundation impacts the lives of more than 2,000 first-generation students, including veterans, and their families who live in underserved communities.

With the mission of transforming academic and professional outcomes for Latinos— our nation’s largest and fastest-growing demographic—for more than three decades TELACU has continually pioneered solutions that shatter barriers to their success.

The Continuum of Education is a dynamic model created by the Foundation, comprised primarily of the College Readiness and College Success Programs, that propels these students from middle school through graduate studies. Commensurate with their academic level, students are provided with a combination of financial resources, a comprehensive support system, and a full-complement of services that include: academic advisement; career guidance; and academic, leadership, personal, and professional development seminars. This unique combination of resources is fundamental to their attainment of a college degree and successful transition into the competitive 21st Century workforce.

The STEM and Business Initiative promotes pursuit of these careers and provides students the support and preparation they need to successfully attain degrees in these rigorous disciplines. As a result, over 80% of Scholars major in STEM or Business and are equipped to meet the growing demand for highly skilled professionals in these technical fields, ensuring that entrepreneurship and innovation remain hallmarks of our great nation!

The Foundation’s newest Initiative, the Workforce Academy, creates and identifies internship and employment opportunities, while also providing the resources and personal coaching that prepare Scholars to succeed within them.

At TELACU, we believe that the true measure of success is not the number of young people who begin college, but rather the number who graduate prepared to enter the professional world. Since 1983, TELACU Scholars have built a stellar legacy.

Historically, approximately 99% of our high school students graduate and almost without exception pursue higher education; more than 99% of our college Scholars earn at minimum a Bachelor’s, with an increasing number going on to seek advanced degrees.

4 TELACU EDUCATION FOUNDATION COLLEGE READINESS PROGRAM Nearly all TELACU high school students graduate prepared to pursue post-secondary education

Middle and High School Students and Veterans

The College Readiness Program is the launching point into the Foundation’s Continuum of Education which will successfully propel TELACU Scholars through middle and high school, college and, for some, even graduate studies.

Serving 1,600 talented students each year, the Program provides the comprehensive academic support, resources and guidance first-generation students need to graduate from high school and be equipped to pursue a post-secondary degree. Students receive guidance and assistance on selecting the right college and navigating all aspects of the complex admissions process. To support them through the difficult transition from high school to college, Scholars visit campuses throughout the state; the summer component provides a real-life university experience as they live on campus and take rigorous courses.

Victor’s participation in the Talent Search Program not only supported his pursuit of an undergraduate degree from UCLA and his Master’s in Computer Science from CSU Los Angeles, it also prepared him to earn a Fellowship from the National Science Foundation—an award that covered his full tuition and provided stipend funds for his research. In addition to excelling academically and landing four summer internships at NASA, he established a ministry organization that supports the college aspirations of other first-generation young people like him.

Angel remembers “being thirteen years old and not yet knowing how to do long division.” Attending college had never even crossed his mind—that is until he enrolled in the Upward Bound Program. “TELACU instilled in me the confidence that I could, and should, compete for a spot at highly selective schools.” His tenacity was rewarded as he became first in his class, earned a Bachelor’s in Economics from Reed College and a JD from Cornell. He now holds a position with the Federal Trade Commission in our nation’s capitol.

After serving in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, Aida’s focus shifted from supporting her fellow countrymen on the battlefield abroad to empowering them in their chosen fields of study here at home. A graduate of the Veterans Upward Bound Program, she earned her Bachelor’s at UCLA and today motivates and prepares fellow veterans to achieve higher education and successfully reintegrate into civilian life.

ND 32 ANNUAL BUILDING THE DREAM GALA 5 COLLEGE SUCCESS PROGRAM Nearly all TELACU Scholars earn at minimum a Bachelor’s and are prepared to succeed in the competitive 21st Century workforce

The College Success Program annually serves approximately 500 students in California, Illinois, Texas and New York with a unique combination of financial resources, a comprehensive support system, and highly effective programs ranging from college advisement and career guidance to mentoring and workforce preparation that includes internship and employment opportunities. Monthly seminars cover a myriad of academic, leadership, personal and professional development topics that ensure students’ successful transition from high school to college, expansion of life-skills, attainment of at minimum a Bachelor’s, and preparation for graduate studies or entry into the increasingly competitive and technical workforce.

Beginning her illustrious academic career as a TELACU Scholar in the College Success Program, Yolanda has attained multiple advanced degrees including a Bachelor’s from UC Berkeley, a Master’s in Education from , and two additional Master’s from CSU Los Angeles that she earned while completing her doctorate at UCLA! She also wrote the legislative proposal for AB 540—carried by TELACU Alumnus Assemblyman Marco Firebaugh—which increases access to higher education for undocumented immigrant students.

The Health Careers Program is a specialized track within the College Success Program focused on increasing the number of nursing professionals equipped to deliver competent in-language, culturally-sensitive care to meet the needs of our nation’s growing Hispanic population. Participants not only receive scholarships, stipends for living expenses, and a full complement of personal and academic services, they also engage in intensive workshops and seminars that include Health Care Interpreter and Professionalism training. Additionally, the Program provides resources, preparation and support to ensure that each graduate also attains Registered Nurse licensure.

6 TELACU EDUCATION FOUNDATION With the full support of her employer, Tanya recently completed her Master’s. One of the Health Careers Program’s most accomplished and dedicated Alums, she balances her studies with a full-time position as a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department and service on numerous key hospital committees. A leader at White Memorial Medical Center, she helps shape policy that elevates the health care delivery system.

Despite the increasing need for advanced degrees in today’s competitive workforce, there is little assistance available for graduate students. David C. Lizárraga Fellowships, Sponsored by TOYOTA, are awarded to students pursuing advanced degrees primarily in Business and STEM. Through a partnership with the prestigious Purdue University’s Krannert School of Management, additional support is available for MBA candidates.

To support his goal of increasing health care access in low-income communities, Jorge, a David C. Lizárraga Fellow, earned degrees in both of the Foundation’s main areas of focus—Business and STEM. He earned dual Bachelor’s in Biology and Biochemistry and completed a dual MBA/MD at UC Irvine. Dr. Jorge is now Associate Medical Director of the Laguna Beach Medical Clinic, a free clinic established to meet the needs of South Orange County’s low-income and medically uninsured population.

Yet another David C. Lizárraga Fellow, Lilibeth augmented her Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering from USC with an MBA from New York University. She is now an Innovation Strategist at one of the world’s oldest management consulting firms—Booz Allen Hamilton—which Time once named “the world’s largest, most prestigious management consulting firm.”

Today TELACU Scholar Alumni number thousands of extraordinary individuals nationwide. They include Master’s and PhD program graduates from some of the most prestigious colleges and universities, and diverse professionals who are excelling as leaders across all sectors—from business, engineering and the sciences, to public policy, law, education and the arts.

ND 32 ANNUAL BUILDING THE DREAM GALA 7 TELACU is proud to present the 2015 “CREO” Award to The Honorable Kevin de León for his lifetime of service and commitment to ensure that Anything is Possible in California.

8 TELACU EDUCATION FOUNDATION 2015 “CREO” AWARD The Honorable Kevin de León CALIFORNIA SENATE PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE

Senator Kevin de León and his two siblings were raised by a single mother who taught them to believe that Anything is Possible in California. Armed with that belief, he became the first in his family to graduate from high school and college, ascending from the barrios of San Diego to one of the highest positions in the State of California—President pro Tempore of the State Senate.

The first Latino to hold the position in more than 130 years, President pro Tem de León is setting a bold agenda to give every child a fair shot at higher education, and to combat climate change while building a new, low-carbon economy with opportunities for all Californians. Leading the Senate of the largest state in the union, he takes on challenging issues that strengthen the national reach of California’s policy-making.

As co-chair of Proposition 39—the California Clean Energy Jobs Act—de León convinced voters to close a corporate tax loophole to generate billions of dollars and fund more than 40,000 California jobs that improve energy efficiency and expand clean energy generation in schools.

Elected to the State Assembly in 2006 and to the State Senate in 2010, de León authored Senate Bill 1234 “Secure Choice Act” in 2012 which created a first-in-the- nation retirement savings program for over 6.3 million workers in California’s private sector. called his efforts to provide retirement security to millions of low-income workers “a model for addressing a national problem.”

De León’s other legislative accomplishments address issues from protecting college students from violence and sexual abuse and allocating vital funds for parks and green space, to Workers’ Compensation reform and ensuring that Hollywood’s production jobs remain at home in the Golden State.

Dedicated to public service, before he began his political career, de León served immigrant communities by teaching US citizenship courses which led him to community organizing and taking a stand against 1994’s Proposition 187. In response to the initiative that denied government services to undocumented immigrants, he organized the largest civil rights march in California history.

Twenty years later, Senator de León continues to fight for immigrants’ rights. He authored first-in-the-nation legislation to prevent the unnecessary separation of immigrant families as well as Senate Bill 396, repealing sections of Prop 187. In 2013, he brokered a compromise with Governor to ensure signage of Assembly Bill 60, a law which allowed undocumented immigrants to obtain drivers licenses so they could drive to work, maintain insurance and step out of the shadow economy.

14 TELACU EDUCATION FOUNDATION EXECUTIVE PRODUCER PRISCILLA LIZÁRRAGA Senior Vice President | TELACU Industries

n May 15th, our eldest granddaughter, Lauren, continued the legacy her paternal grandfather began for our family when he graduated from USC. He Owas the first-ever Latino to graduate from the School of Theology. We were filled with immense pride as 65 years after his graduation, this beautiful Latina graduated from USC’s Marshall School of Business as part of the university’s first-ever Master’s of Science in Social Entrepreneurship cohort. She led the cohort into Galen Center carrying the processional flag—an honor bestowed on her by her peers—and raised it even higher before being seated. Her sister whispered that she was doing a “Statue of Liberty.”

I was instantly reminded of another great honor our family had been blessed to receive, a few short days before, on the hallowed ground of Ellis Island. In the waning hours of the day, from there we enjoyed a breathtaking view of Lady Liberty standing proudly in the New York Harbor, just as she has stood since the 18th Century. Inspired by this beacon of freedom from an early age, I’ll never forget standing beneath her torch as a young woman and reading the moving inscription: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” I paused with such reverence, before continuing, “I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

While some may wonder about the true meaning of this inscription, one thing remains undeniably true: The America we love is a nation like none other in the history of mankind! From sea to shining sea, it is a land brimming with promise and opportunity, and at the symbolic gateway into our great nation, The Lady still illuminates the way to Her golden door.

The Golden Door of opportunity is opened by the enlightenment that comes with education, the Door that all of you here this evening—sponsors, partners, friends— ensure remains open through your generous investments in the lives of our youth. And it is the Door that will remain open because of new generations of individuals who, like us, have been touched by The Light!

THANK YOU, CITI… for empowering new generations of Mentors!

“Being part of the Citi/TELACU Scholars Mentoring Program is a privilege. It reminds me of the importance of giving back to the community and how we are helping to shape the future lives of these young professionals.”

Like most first-generation college students, Victor Ramirez did not have a family member to turn to for assistance with the college application process, financial aid, or career planning. But thanks to two high school mentors—his Biology teacher and his football coach—he received the encouragement and guidance to attain higher education; today he is an executive with the third largest bank in the United States.

Vice President of Community Development for Citi, over the past decade Victor has not only mentored 20 Citi/TELACU Scholars himself, but also recruited and coordinated other executives, all while helping to ensure continued funding and development of the Citi/TELACU Scholars Mentoring Program.

Christopher, one of Victor’s Mentees this year, has not yet reached his academic and professional goals, but he is already sharing the priceless gift he received from Victor. As the Co-Director of Estancia High School’s Latino Business Student Association Mentoring Program, he has personally mentored eight students and facilitated numerous learning opportunities for the entire group—from professional networking skills to combating drug abuse in high school. With such dedication and drive, we can only imagine the impact this recent UC Irvine graduate will make in the world with his degree in International Studies.

I always dreamed of earning“ a college degree, and I thought I knew how invaluable a professional mentor would be. Still, I never expected my relationships with Victor and the other Mentors and Mentees to provide so much insight and be instrumental in helping me develop the skills I need to realize my goal of becoming a successful professional.”

20 TELACU EDUCATION FOUNDATION GALA CHAIR LISA DELONEY Managing Director | Market President, Southern California Citibank

Citi has been a proud supporter of TELACU for over a decade. Through scholarships, internships, and mentoring programs, Citi businesses and the Citi Foundation have worked with the Lizárraga family and TELACU to strengthen and enhance the communities we serve.

At Citi, we share TELACU’s vision and commitment to make lives better in the communities we serve, helping individuals, families and communities achieve economic empowerment. One of Citi’s objectives is to enrich the lives of those who traditionally have been underserved and help fulfill their dreams—dreams such as obtaining an education, buying a home, starting a business and building assets.

We know this goal is embraced by TELACU and its many other supporters and friends in California and beyond. Citi is honored in being able to partner with TELACU in “Building the Dream” together. In fact, through the Citi / TELACU Scholars Mentoring Program, Citi is proud to have mentored over 150 first-generation college Scholars, all of whom have graduated from college. In some instances, Citi has hired some of the TELACU Scholars in various capacities ranging from personal bankers to investment bankers.

On behalf of my colleagues at Citi, I would like to congratulate the scholarship recipients and award winners being recognized by TELACU. I also want to thank David, Michael, Priscilla and everyone at TELACU for their ongoing commitment to improve opportunities for individuals, families and communities.

ND 32 ANNUAL BUILDING THE DREAM GALA 23 THANK YOU, WHITE MEMORIAL MEDICAL CENTER… for leading the way into the new era of health care!

For more than a century, White Memorial Medical Center has cultivated a culture of caring that extends far beyond the Hospital’s walls.

A non-profit teaching hospital in the heart of Los Angeles, White Memorial does much more than care for patients’ physical well-being, including reaching out into the community to recruit local residents interested in health care careers and nurturing them to become the highly skilled professionals needed to meet the special needs of the growing Latino population.

Our nurse training scholarship partnership is creating jobs, providing role models and ensuring culturally competent care. Thank you all for supporting TELACU and their programs. We congratulate the entire Lizárraga Family for their continued support of education and their commitment to Building the Dream for our communities and the young talented people of this region.

ND 32 ANNUAL BUILDING THE DREAM GALA 25 THANK YOU, HYUNDAI… for giving us The Experience that drives our success!

To bridge the gap between achievement in academics and success in the professional world, The Hyundai Internship Experience funds invaluable opportunities within TELACU and its subsidiaries for TELACU Scholars.

One such Scholar is Tino, an aspiring leader who recently earned his degree in Business Management at . Just a few years ago he felt ill-equipped to succeed in his studies. A first-generation student, he was worried that he couldn’t keep up with his peers and refused to participate in class discussion or even to ask for help, fearing he would be perceived as ignorant. Inspired by Confucius’ wisdom that “Those who say they can do something and those who say they can’t do something are both usually right,” Tino began to say that he could do things—like excelling in the classroom and even seeking opportunities that would prepare him to launch his career.

“My favorite experience thus far has been working Through The Hyundai with everyone in Human Resources, where I learned Internship Experience, how important professionalism and confidentiality Tino gained hands-on are in certain departments. Learning about payroll, experience and exposure benefits and risk management, I am grateful for to corporate culture, The Experience that will help me successfully while also continuing to transition into the corporate world.” build his confidence—he even leveraged his own personal experiences to develop a presentation to help high school TELACU Scholars discover their potential and develop leadership and professional skills that would ensure their success. In fact, he did so well that he secured a second Hyundai Internship in TELACU’s Human Resources Department. Both of these assignments provided insight into different management styles and effective operation of a department, while also allowing Tino the opportunity to earn critical income.

Thank you, Hyundai, for creating pathways to rewarding careers by providing the real life work experience that, according to a survey by the National Association of Colleges & Employers, more than 70% of companies look for in candidates. Your investment is preparing the young professionals who will drive the future!

28 TELACU EDUCATION FOUNDATION PRESIDENTIAL PARTNER FRANK WOODBRIDGE Regional Vice President, California Region PepsiCo

Pepsi is proud to support the TELACU Scholars. For more than three decades, the TELACU Education Foundation has transformed educational outcomes for thousands of first-generation students from the under-resourced communities TELACU serves by continually pioneering solutions that shatter barriers to higher education faced by Latino youth. We believe in the vision and passion of TELACU, which is building young Latino leaders for the future. Coming from Costa Rica and now leading the California Region, I understand that managing a large organization successfully requires recognizing the purchasing power of this community; but I also see a great opportunity in tapping into the Latino population as a source of leadership to run our organization in the future.

At PepsiCo, we operate under the guiding principle of Performance with Purpose. To us it means delivering sustainable growth by investing in a healthier future for people and our planet. As a global food and beverage company with brands that stand for quality and are respected household names—Pepsi-Cola, Lay’s, Quaker Oats, Tropicana and Gatorade, to name but a few—we will continue to build a portfolio of enjoyable and healthier foods and beverages, find innovative ways to reduce the use of energy, water and packaging, and provide a great workplace for our associates. Additionally, we respect, support and invest in the local communities where we operate, by hiring local people, creating products designed for local tastes and partnering with local farmers, governments and community groups, because a healthier future for all people and our planet means a more successful future for PepsiCo. This is our promise.

Joining TELACU in investing in the young Scholars we honor tonight is part of our Performance with Purpose vision.

On behalf of my colleagues at Pepsi and the entire PepsiCo family we congratulate our Scholar honorees and salute our community luminary, the Honorable Kevin de León, President Pro Tem California State Senate, who we celebrate tonight. I would also like to thank Priscilla, David, Michael and everyone at TELACU for their unwavering commitment to improving lives through the Foundation’s Continuum of Education— from middle school all the way through post-graduate studies.

LETICIA AGUILAR EVP Regional Executive UNION BANK

It is my pleasure to be a part of TELACU’s annual “Building the Dream” Scholarship Awards Gala. To be in the company of such remarkable community leaders and accomplished student Scholars is truly an honor. As we commemorate 32 years of awarding scholarships to deserving Latino youth, I wish to acknowledge the long-term commitment of the organization’s founder, my good friend, David Lizárraga. The TELACU Education Foundation has transformed the lives of many young Latino students by giving them resources and tools to pursue their own dreams of a higher education. All of this was made possible thanks to David’s vision of a brighter future for our entire community. I also wish to acknowledge all the other Foundation partners, companies and individuals alike. Your charitable contributions to the TELACU Education Foundation are what keep the opportunities open and available to the outstanding students who apply each year. Our shared belief that in order to build vibrant, self-reliant communities we must work together is what has cemented the success of the scholarship program; over time turning it into a legacy of success, with more than 10,000 young men and women receiving scholarships. Union Bank is committed to promoting healthy, sustainable communities, and we see an investment in education as critical to this effort. We know that the new generation of young, tenacious Latino students will be the leaders who shape our future. We are privileged to support TELACU in our shared mission of investing in education and our youth. In honor of TELACU’s “CREO” Award…“¡Yo creo en cada uno de ustedes, son nuestro orgullo latino!”

HON. GADDI H. VASQUEZ Senior Vice President, Government Affairs EDISON INTERNATIONAL AND SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON

At Edison International, our philosophy of giving is that all people should have opportunities to do well. So we support organizations and educational institutions that offer programs and services to help meet the needs of people from underserved communities. Education is one of our priority giving areas and in 2014, we contributed more than $11 million to support education programs. We fund education because we want to help nurture the Scholars and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) professionals of tomorrow. We also fund education because we want our workforce to reflect the ethnic diversity of our customer base. Demographic information shows that Latinos make up 46.3 percent of Southern California Edison’s service area. To ensure that Latino youth from underserved communities are provided opportunities to attend college and pursue careers in STEM, we have our own $1.2 million Edison Scholars program, where we provide scholarships to 30 students each year. We also support schools and community organizations by funding education programs and scholarships so underrepresented students can attend college—often times where they may not have had the opportunity otherwise. TELACU has been one of our education partners since 2004, and we have supported its education programs and funded numerous scholarships. We also engage with TELACU to provide internships so young Latino minds can get practical work experience. Over the years of our partnership, we have witnessed TELACU’s successes first hand. In fact, there are former TELACU Scholars now gainfully employed at Edison who are making meaningful contributions to helping our company successfully achieve its business objectives. On behalf of our entire workforce at Edison International and Southern California Edison, I congratulate all of the TELACU Scholars present here tonight. We know the power in partnerships and want to also thank other TELACU supporters for ensuring that our future Latino STEM leaders have access to STEM education.

30 TELACU EDUCATION FOUNDATION FORTY-SEVEN YEARS AGO… a group of concerned citizens stood on the threshold of a dream. It was a new dream, conceived within the possibility that a community could direct its own rebirth and renewal. It was a dream founded in the pioneering spirit of America—that hardworking men and women could build their own American Dream if they only had the tools to do so. It was in the spirit of this dream that a community was brought together, bound by a willingness to work hard, and driven by the knowledge that the dream would soon become a reality. Their dream became TELACU.

TELACU Founded

Through legislation authored by US Senators Robert F. Kennedy and Jacob K. Javits, The East Los Angeles Community Union— TELACU—becomes the last of 30 original CDCs to be chartered and incorporated. Organized by members of the community and with assistance from the United Auto Workers, TELACU seeks to find ways for the disenfranchised local community to negotiate with the public sector for socio-economic equity in the same manner that labor negotiates with industry.

ND 32 ANNUAL BUILDING THE DREAM GALA 31 THIRTY-TWO YEARS AGO…

TELACU awarded a small number of scholarships—15 to be exact—to 7 young men and 8 young women who dreamed of going to college. We were joined on that occasion by the families of those 15 men and women, as well as administrators from , Cal State LA, and USC—our very first family of partnering colleges and universities. That day we set in motion the belief in another dream. It was a dream that those 15 people would be the first of many thousands of young people to achieve their hopes and desires of creating a greater future for themselves and for all the people of our community.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

For more than three decades, we have had the privilege of working together with partners like you to transform educational outcomes for thousands of BOARD OF DIRECTORS students. Beginning with a modest 15 college Scholars DR. DAVID C. LIZÁRRAGA here in our local community, in 1994 we expanded our Chairman and Founder Programs to include middle and high school students and veterans. In 2001 we further extended our reach DR. MICHAEL LIZÁRRAGA to underserved communities in Illinois, Texas and New PRISCILLA LIZÁRRAGA York. Recognizing that in our ever-evolving global CARMEN O. PEREZ economy a college degree is not necessarily sufficient to guarantee meaningful employment, the Foundation expanded its services once again and intensified TELACU EDUCATION the career development aspect of our Programs FOUNDATION STAFF through two highly effective initiatives: the STEM and VELMA DE LA ROSA Senior Vice President Business Initiative and the Workforce Academy. The Executive Director, TRiO Programs Foundation’s relationship with our Scholars does not end at graduation; we know that as they succeed in COLLEGE SUCCESS PROGRAM the professional world their impact—and all of ours— LAUREN LIZÁRRAGA will continue to grow. Director STEPHANIE “STEVIE” LIZÁRRAGA As they earn their college degrees, they eagerly launch Assistant Director into rewarding careers with a renewed passion to make a difference. EDUARDO ANTUNEZ Master of Power and Control Systems Candidate CSU LOS ANGELES BS, Electrical Engineering CSU LOS ANGELES Eduardo aspires to become an electrical engineer who is not only skilled, but also ethical, putting the safety, health and welfare of the public above all else. Troubled by the world’s reliance on electricity, he plans to use his education to help conserve our natural resources by discovering alternate energy sources. His dedication to equality also inspired him to found Students United to Reach Goals in Education (SURGE) to empower undocumented students and provide the support they so desperately need to succeed. Most recently, as part of the Wild Life Conservation UAV Challenge, he worked on the CSULA Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.

DAVID RAMIREZ-GALVEZ Juris Doctor Candidate BA, Political Science UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, LOS ANGELES Growing up laboring next to his father on construction sites for unfair wages, David was inspired to obtain an education in law. While clerking for the ACLU of Southern California last summer, he worked alongside attorneys to ensure Unaccompanied Children from Central America were treated fairly and humanely by the US Government. Now at Stanford, he is using the University’s platform to shed light on issues affecting Latinos, such as the deplorable conditions of immigration detention centers. Upon graduation, he will clerk for Judge Costa of the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in Houston, and also organize voter registration rallies and mobilize the Latino vote. GINI SANCHEZ MBA Candidate PURDUE UNIVERSITY BA, Business Management AZUSA PACIFIC UNIVERSITY Only a month after graduating Cum Laude from Azusa Pacific University with a degree in Business Management, Gini began working for Nestle and almost immediately was selected as the company’s sole representative to the LAUSD Dodger Stadium Community Partnership. CRYSTAL CALDERA Juris Doctor/PhD in Sociology Candidate UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, IRVINE MA, Education; Emphasis in Counseling CSU DOMINGUEZ HILLS The first person in her family to graduate from college, Crystal is also UC Irvine’s first PhD Candidate in Sociology to concurrently pursue a law degree through the Program in Law and Graduate Studies. Her current research, focused on the daily realities of life within Mexican-origin communities in the US, not only gives a scholarly voice to an underrepresented community, but also earned her distinction as a 2014 American Association for Hispanics in Education Graduate Fellow! One day, she plans to critically analyze how Latino culture and experiences shape the law in order to eliminate obstacles and create opportunities for our nation’s largest and fastest-growing population segment.

MONTSERRAT ESPEJEL MBA Candidate MOUNT SAINT MARY’S UNIVERSITY BS, Business Administration CSU LOS ANGELES Balancing a full-time job, volunteer commitments and a four-year-old, Montserrat struggled to find information on how she could obtain a college degree due to her immigration status. Eventually, with support and resources from TELACU and various on-campus clubs, she graduated from CSU Los Angeles with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration, option in Finance. She is certain that her next goal—an MBA—will expand her career opportunities and equip her to empower other Latinas and undocumented students on the path toward higher education.

CRUZ OLIVARES Master of Computers and Electric Power Systems Candidate CSU LOS ANGELES BS, Electrical Engineering CSU LOS ANGELES Cruz has already amassed an impressive résumé including internships at Southern California Edison and MWH Global Engineering, and, most recently, serving as Software Engineer Lead on a DIRECTV Internet Connectivity App. His achievements have also earned him the honor of being selected as a Microsoft Scholar as well as a College of Engineering, Computer Science and Technology Corporate Scholar. JOEY ZAMORA Doctorate in Educational Leadership Candidate UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MA, Education UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX MA, School Counseling UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA Joey’s mantra—Here for the Kids—has guided him through nearly a decade-long teaching career. Being of-service to his students, specifically those who are either at-risk or college-bound, is what motivates him to go to his classroom every day. Although his role has been that of educator, he became counselor and mentor to many young people, offering advice and guidance to help them achieve higher education. Adding a doctorate to his already impressive credentials will support him in his transition to guidance counselor and, eventually, college professor.

68 TELACU EDUCATION FOUNDATION DAVID C. LIZÁRRAGA FELLOWS SPONSORED BY TOYOTA

EMILY ADAMS Master of Communications Candidate CSU LOS ANGELES BA, Communications CSU LOS ANGELES A graduate of TELACU’s Veterans Upward Bound Program, Emily can personally relate to the struggles our soldiers face when reintegrating into civilian life. TATIANA BUSTAMANTE Master of Management Candidate UNIVERSITY OF REDLANDS BA, Business Administration, Marketing and Management CSU LOS ANGELES Tatiana and her family came to the United States as political refugees from Cuba, leaving behind everything and everyone they’d ever known, in the hopes of a better future. Through a lot of hard work and long hours she achieved success both on campus and in the restaurants where she worked; she became the first person in her family to earn a college degree and rose to management positions. While she has built a successful career in hospitality, she aspires to further her education, ultimately planning to pursue a dual MBA/JD, and become a role model for other first-generation students.

EDWARD GONZÁLEZ Master of Mechanical Engineering Candidate CSU LOS ANGELES BS, Mechanical Engineering CSU LOS ANGELES Whether by providing clean water, restoring city parks, or building new schools, Edward asserts that a career in engineering will empower him to give back in many ways to underserved communities locally and around the world. This summer, he and his team will travel there to install computers and power systems, completing the project and meeting the deserving young people they’ve been working so hard to help. JACKEE MONTAÑO Juris Doctor Candidate SOUTHWESTERN LAW SCHOOL MA, Education, Social and Cultural Analysis CSU LONG BEACH Jackee’s law school career has focused on public interest law. In the summer, she will clerk as an extern in the Children’s Rights Division at Public Counsel—the largest pro bono law firm in the nation—focusing on transition-age foster youth cases. She is passionate about bringing awareness and access to the rights and legal services available to individuals and organizations. Her ultimate goal is to serve the public’s interest as a Public Defender in criminal law, or as a civil law attorney combating inequality and injustice in various fields.

ND 32 ANNUAL BUILDING THE DREAM GALA 69 DAVID C. LIZÁRRAGA FELLOWS SPONSORED BY TOYOTA

FIDEL GOMEZ GARCIA MBA Candidate UNIVERSITY OF LA VERNE BA, International Business CSU FULLERTON At the age of 14, Fidel left his home in to ease the financial burden his parents were under and to chase his American Dream. Working back-to-back shifts to pay his rent, buy groceries and send money back to his family, he was undeterred in furthering his education. He consistently achieved high sales in his retail positions and began developing a professional network through the Orange County Youth Chamber of Commerce. By becoming a successful businessman, he intends to open doors of opportunity for other first-generation students and support them in pursuit of their own American Dream.

NARCISO JIMENEZ Master of Civil Engineering and Construction Management Candidate CSU FULLERTON BS, Civil Engineering and Construction Management CSU LOS ANGELES On a walk through downtown Los Angeles as a child, Narciso could not understand why there were so many people sleeping on the streets of such a prominent city. As a result, he is determined to create affordable green housing in a self-sustaining community. Augmenting his degree in Civil Engineering with an advanced degree in Construction Engineering and Management will allow him to utilize his design skills to create and realize his own vision—a home for every family to fulfill their American Dream!

ZEYLA ZAZUETA Master of Social Work Candidate UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BA, Psychology MOUNT SAINT MARY’S UNIVERSITY Successfully balancing her academic responsibilities with her extracurricular activities, Zeyla has maintained an impressive 3.75 GPA while also dedicating a significant portion of her time to helping others. The true embodiment of service, over the past two years she has interned and volunteered at Bienvenidos Children’s Center, A Place Called Home and Heart of Los Angeles, even using funds from last year’s David C. Lizárraga Fellowship to purchase supplies for these worthy causes. From helping children suffering from hunger or abuse to supporting at-risk youth and single mothers, this future Social Worker will change the world by impacting the lives of those in need.

LUIS VENTURA Doctorate of Dental Surgery Candidate UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, LOS ANGELES BS, Biochemistry LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY Growing up without insurance, Luis and his family had difficulty accessing quality dental care. He saw how inconsistent treatment, language and cultural barriers, and lack of doctor/patient interaction exacerbated the disparity already faced by low-income patients. After graduating Magna Cum Laude from Loyola Marymount, he completed summer programs at both Columbia University and UCLA’s School of Dentistry to further enhance his skills and learn new techniques. Dedicated to providing access to preventive and comprehensive dental care in underserved communities, he helped create a Public Service Announcement on periodontal disease for the MTA’s Transit TV Network and he also interns at a dental clinic in Inglewood.

70 TELACU EDUCATION FOUNDATION FEATURED SCHOLARS

TELACU Business Scholar ASHLYE ANGUIANO Senior, Business Economics Minor in Film and Media Studies UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, IRVINE

A four-year College Success Program Scholar and current member of the Citi/TELACU Scholars Mentoring Program, Ashlye has always been determined to pursue higher education and truly improve her family’s economic situation. She is equally determined to succeed professionally and has secured numerous internships at UC Irvine, one at Wells Fargo and even the Loan Administrative Internship here at TELACU Community Capital. Her ultimate goal is to become a role model who influences her community to achieve self-sufficiency through higher education.

TELACU Engineering Scholar JAIRO GUERRIDO Senior, Electrical Engineering CSU LOS ANGELES

The eldest son of immigrant parents, Jairo had to take on two jobs to help his family and still managed to excel academically. Although he found science and math challenging, he persevered because of his passion for engineering—a discipline that teaches how to think outside the box and to convert scientific knowledge into technology that fuels innovation. A leader among his peers, he serves as a MESA Engineering Program Advisor, Academic Representative for the Salvadorian Educational Fund, and Team Captain of CSU Los Angeles’ P3 Project that maximizes students’ participation in school activities and access to campus resources. With post- graduation plans that include Green Technology research and establishing a school that educates young people about dynamic opportunities in the sciences, Jairo is the personification of the importance and value of the Dream Act to the future of our nation.

TELACU / César Chávez Leadership Scholar HELEN CHAJ Senior, Public Relations CSU NORTHRIDGE

Transitioning to university from her community of Boyle Heights, while working two jobs and taking 17 units, was a real challenge for Helen. Through her internships, including one here at TELACU, she has begun fulfilling her commitment to impact the disparity in health care and high levels of disease in the Latino community. Most recently, her position with a PR firm whose client is Goya Foods—one of our nation’s largest Hispanic food companies— is giving her the opportunity to broaden her impact as she supports the company with their community health initiatives.

ND 32 ANNUAL BUILDING THE DREAM GALA 71 FEATURED SCHOLARS

TELACU Arts Award Scholar DANIELA RAMIREZ Senior, English Minor in Music LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY

Daniela loved music from an early age, but like most young people from underserved communities, her first-generation family had to prioritize academics over the music lessons that helped her peers master their instruments. Since she couldn’t afford formal training, she developed her instrument by singing as a way to express herself, grow closer to her religious community, and even escape the stress of everyday life. And escape she did—last semester she studied abroad at the John Felice Center in Italy and this summer, she will travel to Paris with the Loyola Marymount University choruses.

TELACU STEM Scholar ERNESTO COVARRUBIAS Senior, Mechanical Engineering CSU LOS ANGELES

Ernesto got a jumpstart on his professional career by working for UPS while still in school, rising to the position of Engineering Department Supervisor. With an impressive 4.0 GPA in his field of study, he has served as Lead Math Facilitator at CSU Los Angeles’ College of Engineering, Chairman of the Board of the University Student Union, and President of the Mechanical Engineering Honor Society Pi Tau Sigma. In his current roles as Commissioner for the City of Commerce Education Commission and Vice President of Internal Relations at SHPE, he promotes the academic and professional advancement of Hispanics in engineering, math and science.

TELACU Science Scholar MIRIAM ARELLANO Sophomore, Biology UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, RIVERSIDE

After her grandmother suffered a debilitating stroke and her physical therapy was abruptly cut off by the insurance company, Miriam took it upon herself to help her recover the motor skills she had lost. Recognizing that her recovery process was being stalled by depression, Miriam suggested to her family that they provide more encouragement. Their approach paid off when her grandmother’s condition improved and she was able to sign her name for the first time in two years! This success inspired her to shift her career ambition from music to the field of neuroscience where she could investigate how to combine medicine and psychology to create more effective, alternative forms of physical therapy; and—with a beautifully trained operatic singing voice— we’re sure she’ll manage to incorporate some music as well.
