LIVE! PLATINUM BALLROOM 900 WEST OLYMPIC BOULEVARD LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA 90015 ABOUT TELACU TELACU was established in 1968 as a pioneering institution committed to service, empowerment, advancement, and the creation of self-sufficiency. For the past 47 years, TELACU has partnered with committed people like you who make the American Dream live on in the communities we serve. In TELACU’s early days, Dr. David C. Lizárraga and his management team devised a unique business model for community development. The model relies on the requirement that each and every business TELACU owns and operates supports a double bottom line—profitability that is inseparable from social impact. Quality, affordable homes are developed for first-time homeowners, and beautiful residential complexes are constructed and operated for families and senior citizens. New community assets in the form of schools, infrastructure, shopping centers, and municipal facilities are built, creating well-paying jobs for local residents. Responsive financial institutions are managed to provide access to capital for small business owners and hardworking families. Recognizing that few of our Latino young people were graduating from high school and even fewer BOARD OF DIRECTORS from college, Dr. Lizárraga founded the TELACU JAY CANDELARIA Education Foundation in 1983 to address this critical JOSE ELIZONDO obstacle to the social and economic advancement of JAMES L. HODGES our community. DR. MICHAEL LIZÁRRAGA BRIAN O’NEILL In partnership with friends of TELACU, including CARMEN O. PEREZ donors, corporate sponsors, and our network of ALEX SOTOMAYOR colleges and universities, the Foundation provides scholarships to hundreds of college students in SENIOR EXECUTIVE STAFF California, Illinois, Texas and New York each year. DR. DAVID C. LIZÁRRAGA Nearly all of these Scholars earn their degree. The DR. MICHAEL LIZÁRRAGA Foundation also annually serves an additional 1,600 PAUL SAMUEL young people, nursing students and veterans, GERALD BARHAM ensuring through our highly effective educational JAY BELL programs that these Scholars stay in school, graduate JASMINE BORREGO and go on to pursue post-secondary education. JOHN CLEM VELMA DE LA ROSA The men and women of TELACU consider it a ANA GONZALEZ PRISCILLA LIZÁRRAGA privilege to work every day in serving, empowering, TOM PROVENCIO advancing and creating self-sufficiency in our JOSE VILLALOBOS communities—communities we build with faithful partners like you. 2 TELACU EDUCATION FOUNDATION WELCOME We are honored to welcome you to TELACU’s 32nd Annual Building the Dream Gala, Presented by TOYOTA! Last month, the Lizárraga Family had the great privilege of traveling to New York City where David received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. Presented to only 100 Americans each year, this prestigious award celebrates the accomplishments of individuals who exemplify the American immigrant experience. Our family was humbled indeed to see our man receive his medal on Ellis Island, the iconic gateway where so many immigrants first crossed the threshold of our nation in their pursuit of the American Dream. As we listened to the playing of our National Anthem and stood in the Great Hall where 12 million people from foreign lands gained entrance to our country, we were overwhelmed with gratitude for all those who made this singularly significant moment possible through so many sacrifices made on our behalf. For more than three decades, partners like you have made the American Dream possible for thousands of TELACU Scholars. These young people stand at another gateway to that Dream—the powerful gateway of education. Through the selfless sacrifice of your financial resources, valuable time and incomparable wisdom, you have generously provided the access point for additional generations of immigrants to participate in the American Dream. Tonight, we celebrate that Dream in the lives of our TELACU Scholars, and especially in the example of the first Latino California State Senate President pro Tempore in over 130 years, The Honorable Kevin de León. Like so many of our Scholars, Senator de León was the first in his family to graduate from high school and college. His commitment to creating greater citizenship opportunities and justice for immigrant families led to his organization of the largest civil rights march in California history. In gratitude for his contributions to our great state, TELACU is proud to present to Senator Kevin de León our organization’s highest recognition, the TELACU “CREO” Award. And with equal gratitude to all of you who remain committed to making the American Dream live on in the life of every TELACU Scholar… ¡Muchísimas Gracias! Dr. David C. Lizárraga Dr. Michael Lizárraga Chairman & Founder President & CEO TELACU Education Foundation TELACU ND 32 ANNUAL BUILDING THE DREAM GALA 3 ABOUT THE FOUNDATION Through the generous investments of our network of committed partners— corporations, individuals, and educational institutions—annually the TELACU Education Foundation impacts the lives of more than 2,000 first-generation students, including veterans, and their families who live in underserved communities. With the mission of transforming academic and professional outcomes for Latinos— our nation’s largest and fastest-growing demographic—for more than three decades TELACU has continually pioneered solutions that shatter barriers to their success. The Continuum of Education is a dynamic model created by the Foundation, comprised primarily of the College Readiness and College Success Programs, that propels these students from middle school through graduate studies. Commensurate with their academic level, students are provided with a combination of financial resources, a comprehensive support system, and a full-complement of services that include: academic advisement; career guidance; and academic, leadership, personal, and professional development seminars. This unique combination of resources is fundamental to their attainment of a college degree and successful transition into the competitive 21st Century workforce. The STEM and Business Initiative promotes pursuit of these careers and provides students the support and preparation they need to successfully attain degrees in these rigorous disciplines. As a result, over 80% of Scholars major in STEM or Business and are equipped to meet the growing demand for highly skilled professionals in these technical fields, ensuring that entrepreneurship and innovation remain hallmarks of our great nation! The Foundation’s newest Initiative, the Workforce Academy, creates and identifies internship and employment opportunities, while also providing the resources and personal coaching that prepare Scholars to
