Pessoa Il nostro lavoro nasce dalla lettura del libro “ Il linguaggio simbolico” di E. Fromm. Affascinate da quanto letto ci siamo letteralmente “imbattute” in quello che è divenuto un vero e proprio mito moderno, Peter Pan. Iniziamo da quello che Fromm ci dice per quanto riguarda la genesi del simbolo. Che cos’è un simbolo? Un simbolo viene spesso definito come “qualcosa che sta al posto di qualcos’altro.” Nel linguaggio simbolico le esperienze interiori vengono espresse come se fossero esperienze sensoriali, come qualcosa che abbiamo fatto o subito nel mondo esteriore; in esso il mondo esterno è un simbolo del mondo interno, un simbolo per le nostre anime e le nostre menti. Il mito, come il sogno, presenta una storia che si svolge nello spazio e nel tempo e che esprime, in un linguaggio simbolico, concetti religiosi e filosofici, esperienze dell’anima in cui sta il vero significato del mito. La storia manifesta non è altro che una modalità comunicativa, essa contiene precise tracce del passato. Tra coloro che hanno permesso una interpretazione innovativa del mito, Fromm annovera in particolar modo Bachofen 1 e Freud. Il primo ha permesso di cogliere nel mito sia il significato religioso e psicologico, sia quello più squisitamente storico. Il secondo, basandosi sulla sua teoria dei sogni, ha permesso la lettura simbolica dei miti; Freud però sbagliava nel leggere in essi solo degli impulsi irrazionali o primitivi, e non la saggezza del passato. -

Sociopathetic abscess or yawning chasm? The absent postcolonial transition in Doctor Who Lindy A Orthia The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia Abstract This paper explores discourses of colonialism, cosmopolitanism and postcolonialism in the long-running television series, Doctor Who. Doctor Who has frequently explored past colonial scenarios and has depicted cosmopolitan futures as multiracial and queer- positive, constructing a teleological model of human history. Yet postcolonial transition stages between the overthrow of colonialism and the instatement of cosmopolitan polities have received little attention within the program. This apparent ‘yawning chasm’ — this inability to acknowledge the material realities of an inequitable postcolonial world shaped by exploitative trade practices, diasporic trauma and racist discrimination — is whitewashed by the representation of past, present and future humanity as unchangingly diverse; literally fixed in happy demographic variety. Harmonious cosmopolitanism is thus presented as a non-negotiable fact of human inevitability, casting instances of racist oppression as unnatural blips. Under this construction, the postcolonial transition needs no explication, because to throw off colonialism’s chains is merely to revert to a more natural state of humanness, that is, cosmopolitanism. Only a few Doctor Who stories break with this model to deal with the ‘sociopathetic abscess’ that is real life postcolonial modernity. ...und zum dritten – Doctor Who 2007 – ohne Rose nix los? Doctor Nr. 10 findet neue weibliche Begleitung Am Rande sei bemerkt, daß die Folge, die wir letztes Mal angesehen haben, den Hugo Award in der Kategorie Drama - Short Form gewonnen hat. Am Ende der Staffel 2006 verließ Rose Tyler in einem tränenreichen Finale den 10. Doctor, um in einer Parallelwelt mit Original-Mutter, Parallel-Vater und verändertem Mickey glücklich bis an ihr seliges Ende zu leben. Damit ist bis auf David Tennant in der Titelrolle das gesamte Stammpersonal verschwunden. Doch die nächste Weihnachtsfolge kommt bestimmt. Nach einer Einmal-Begleiterin trifft der Doctor in der ersten Folge 2007 eine angehende Ärztin – Martha Jones – die ihn während der gesamten Staffel begleitet. In den letzten drei Folgen stößt auch noch Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) dazu, bekannt aus Staffel 2005 und der Spin-off-Serie Torchwood. Die Folgen im einzelnen Weihnachts-Sonderfolge 2006 ‚The Runaway Bride’. Während die Braut Donna Noble in der Kirche auf den Altar zuschreitet, verschwindet sie plötzlich und taucht in der TARDIS auf. Obwohl der Doctor versucht, sie zurückzubringen, reagiert sie recht lange feindselig auf ihren vermeintlichen Entführer. Diesmal stecken sehr irdische Übeltäter aus der frühesten Erdvergangenheit hinter der Story, deren Höhepunkte eine Verfolgungsjagd zwischen Taxi und TARDIS auf der Autobahn und eine trockengelegte Themse sind. Nur mit Weihnachten hat die Story nichts zu tun. Am Schluß rät Donna dem Doctor, sich eine Begleitung zu suchen, da sie glaubt, er braucht sie. Donna Noble wird gespielt von Catherine Tate, wohl derzeit die berühmteste britische Komikerin. Sie wird nicht die letzte Top-Berühmtheit sein, die in dieser Staffel auftritt. -

Doctor Who’s Feminine Mystique: Examining the Politics of Gender in Doctor Who By Alyssa Franke Professor Sarah Houser, Department of Government, School of Public Affairs Professor Kimberly Cowell-Meyers, Department of Government, School of Public Affairs University Honors in Political Science American University Spring 2014 Abstract In The Feminine Mystique, Betty Friedan examined how fictional stories in women’s magazines helped craft a societal idea of femininity. Inspired by her work and the interplay between popular culture and gender norms, this paper examines the gender politics of Doctor Who and asks whether it subverts traditional gender stereotypes or whether it has a feminine mystique of its own. When Doctor Who returned to our TV screens in 2005, a new generation of women was given a new set of companions to look up to as role models and inspirations. Strong and clever, socially and sexually assertive, these women seemed to reject traditional stereotypical representations of femininity in favor of a new representation of femininity. But for all Doctor Who has done to subvert traditional gender stereotypes and provide a progressive representation of femininity, its story lines occasionally reproduce regressive discourses about the role of women that reinforce traditional gender stereotypes and ideologies about femininity. This paper explores how gender is represented and how norms are constructed through plot lines that punish and reward certain behaviors or choices by examining the narratives of the women Doctor Who’s titular protagonist interacts with. Ultimately, this paper finds that the show has in recent years promoted traits more in line with emphasized femininity, and that the narratives of the female companion’s have promoted and encouraged their return to domestic roles. -

DOCTOR WHO AND THE CREATION OF A NON-GENDERED HERO ARCHETYPE Alessandra J. Pelusi 85 Pages December 2014 This thesis investigates the ways in which the television program Doctor Who forges a new, non-gendered, hero archetype from the amalgamation of its main characters. In order to demonstrate how this is achieved, I begin with reviewing some of the significant and relevant characters that contribute to this. I then examine the ways in which female and male characters are represented in Doctor Who, including who they are, their relationship with the Doctor, and what major narrative roles they play. I follow this with a discussion of the significance of the companion, including their status as equal to the Doctor. From there, I explore the ways in which the program utilizes existing archetypes by subverting them and disrupting the status quo.
