Since it’s an odd-numbered year, the regular session will be fiscal in nature, meaning tax bills can be filed and passed. The Louisiana State Legislature is responsible for redistricting following each census. Legislators are expected to address redistricting as part of the 2021 legislative session. Republicans won a 27-12 majority in the Senate and a 68-35 majority in the House. The Democratic Party controls the governorship, creating a divided government rather than a state government trifecta. The LA Senate President is Page Cortez. The LA House Speaker is Clay Schexnayder. WASHINGTON, D.C – On Wednesday, February 17, Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel announced the formation of the new Committee on Election Integrity dedicated to restoring election transparency and ensuring voters have confidence in future election processes. “Election integrity is one of the most critical issues we face as a Party and as a country. What we saw this past election – states undoing important safeguards, bypassing the proper legislative processes, and changing election laws in the eleventh hour – was deeply troubling and brought chaos and uncertainty to our sacred democratic processes. As RNC Chair, I will not sit idly by and the Party will respond. The RNC will play a crucial role in restoring confidence in our elections, promoting election integrity, and recommending best practices to ensure that future elections are free, fair, and transparent.” – RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel La. secretary of state withdraws request for new voting machines Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin announced Wednesday, March 3rd, that he was immediately cancelling the process, called Request for Proposals or RFP, to acquire new voting machines to replace the fleet of 30-year-old machines – a contract potentially worth $100 million over 10 years. Two of the bidders had officially protested the RFP. State Sen. Sharon Hewitt, the Slidell Republican who as head of the Senate & Governmental Affairs committee oversees voting issues, had called Ardoin to cancel the bidding process amid questions from lawmakers. The process was cancelled by Ardoin after discussing the issue with House Speaker Clay Schexnayder, R-Gonzales, who agreed with the action, and Senate President Page Cortez. “This will bring an opportunity for full transparency on the purchasing process and election systems for all levels of government,” Cortez said. 5 BAYOU LACOMBE REPUBLICAN WOMEN MARCH 2021 Great time at the February 23rd Meeting!
