26 The Saratoga Special Friday, July 25, 2014 Taste of the Week Barrelhouse BY ASHLEY DINGEMAN dogs

When you taste something you simply cannot stop talking about, you know it’s special. This week, I stopped by The Barrelhouse at 68 Beekman Street, sat down and enjoyed a bite to eat. Serving burgers, sausages, chicken speedies and hot dogs to name a few, you’d be surprised to know they also have plenty of vegetarian options as well. While I might have gone a little overboard with the amount of food I ordered, the Michigan Dogs are what have been on my mind ever since. These two all-beef hot dogs had everything; diced onions, meat sauce, and beer mustard. The mustard in particular was sharp and tangy, and paired so perfectly with the saltiness of the hot dog. As for the sides go, you get the choice of two with most menu items at The Barrelhouse. On this visit I opted for the macaroni salad and the coleslaw, a twist on the traditional styles. The macaroni salad was light and fresh, and the coleslaw was marinated in vinegar as opposed to the masking flavors of mayonnaise. Not only did it closely resemble pickled vegetables, but you could also taste how farm fresh these vegetables actually were. Aside from the food, did I mention they always have 20 craft beers on tap? While they will be changing regularly, you’ll be sure to find a nice variety, from IPAs and lagers to stouts and ciders. The Barrelhouse is open Monday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Ashley Dingeman, who owns the popular Saratoga Food Fanatic website at http://saratogafoodfanatic.com/ is spending the summer writing for The Saratoga Special. Taste of the Week column appears weekly and if you’ve got something for Ashley to try, drop her an email at [email protected].

This time around, the jockey will be up and down the road with the Valentine horses. He was headed south Thursday afternoon. There’s no doubting the impact of a win, however. “That makes the season,” Norris said. “I’ll be back in Virginia tomorrow, and a win will make it easier getting up in the morning.” “The horse dreams of flying in the air like a gust of wind on an abandoned Christmas tree. . .”
