CHARLES WESLEY and Ms CHILDREN Methodist History, 36:3 (April 1998) THE WESLEYS AT HOME: CHARLES WESLEY AND ms CHILDREN PHILIP 0LLESON The family life of Charles Wesley has perhaps not always received its due share of attention from his biographers, who have understandably con­ centrated their attentions on the more public aspects of his life. 1 Yet the domestic sphere assumed for Charles an importance that it never had for his ·brother John, and any biographical study needs to take account of this impor­ tant area of his life and his relationships with the members of hisJamily, cir- cle.: his wife Sarah (1726-1822), his daughter Sally (1759-1828),2 and his sons Charles (1757,...-1834) and Samuel (1766-T837).3 This paper focuses on Charles Wesley's attitudes to family life and his relationships with his chil­ dren, drawing on the evidence of his journals, letters and poetry, on unpub­ lished family papers, and on contemporary testimony. 4 'For biographies of Charles Wesley, see Thomas Jackson, The Life of the Rev. See also Representative Verse of Charles 139 I I 140 Methodist History l I J i' When confronted with information from such sources, one of the biogra­ ! pher's first concerns is with context: the extent to which the picture of family life and parental attitudes that emerges is typical of its time and the position in society of those involved. Accordingly, this paper begins by considering preva­ lent attitudes to the education and upbringing of children in 18th century England, and in particular those attitudes prevalent within Methodism. It goes on to examine the childhood and early upbringing of the Wesley children. From the point of view both of parents and of children the evidence here is uneven, favoring Charles and his sons at the expense of his wife Sarah and his daughter Sally. In the absence of information about the specific attitudes and contribution of Sarah Wesley, but bearing in mind what we know about other aspects of the marriage, we can only assume that Charles's views and attitudes were shared by her. As far as the children are concerned, the main sources of information relate mainly to Charles and Samuel, both of whom were musical child prodigies. Regrettably, there is comparatively little information on the upbringing of Sally, who, lacking her brothers' outstanding musical abilities, was less in the public eye and attracted correspondingly less attention. During his last decade., the most significant events in Charles's family life were his dealings with Samuel, at the time going through a troubled ado­ lescence and early adulthood. Of the three Wesley children, Samuel was the most musically gifted. He also comprehensively rejected the values of his family and of Methodism, to the sorrow of the family and the scandal of the entire Methodist community. Most of Samuel's later life dates from after Charles' death, and is thus not of direct relevance here.. But his involvement with and conversion to Roman Catholicism arid his long-standing love affair with Charlotte Louisa Martin both date from the 1780s and will be considered as important and highly stressful features ofCharles's final years. I Despite a large amount of concentrated and detailed attention over the last thirty years or so, the history of childhood still remains a controversial subject,· to the extent that there is little agreement even on the broadest out­ lines of how relationships between parents and children changed over time.5 Wesley, ed. The Wesleys at Home: Charles Wesley and His Children 141 Many historians, however, would identify a move in the late 17th century to a more liberal set of attitudes to children and their education from those that had been prevalent earlier. These new attitudes were articulated and encapsu­ lated by John Locke in Some Thoughts Concerning Education (1693), a work of immense influence on thinking on education for much of the 18th century. 6 The dominant attitude of 17th century parents to children had been, in the words of J. H. Plumb, "autocratic, indeed ferocious."7 Unquestioning obedi­ ence was expected of children, and infringements of discipline were met by harsh punishments. The new, more liberal, attitude stressed the importance of gentler approaches: a series of rewards and punishments appealing to chil­ dren's developing reason, by which they would be bf6ught Up as useful and' accomplished members of society. Although both approaches can be seen in 18th century educational thought, the more modern approach became increas­ ingly the dominant one. The two approaches have separate religiot;ts and theological pedigrees. The earlier model is Calvinistic and stresses the essentially evil nature of the child, acquired through original sin: in the words of Richard Allestree in 1658, "the new-borne babe is full of the stains and pollutions of sin which it inherits from our first parents through our loins."8 By contrast, the latter m~del stresses the essential goodness and innocence of the -child and the belief that with appropriate education and parental guidance he or she will prevail over the forces of evil. Theological underpinning for this view, which likens the child to Adam before the Fall, can be found as early as 1628 in John Earle's Micro-cosmographie: "A child is a man in a small let­ ter, yet the best copy of Adam before he tasted of Eve or the apple. He is purely happy, because he knows no evil."9 This stress on the innocence of the child was to become more prominent in the 18th century, and was in one guise or another to be central to many Romantic attitudes to children and childhood. The most striking feature of the new attitude to children is the emphasis laid on the rationality of the child, and indeed of the whole enterprise of child­ rearing. In the eighteenth century, a time when Calvinism and Arminianism were hotly debated, a sect of Methodism developed out of this place. Contrary to the popular teachings of the Wesley brothers, Calvinistic Methodism’s presence spread beyond the borders of Wales, influencing some who would cling tightly to predestination doctrines to the end of their lives. Among these was Selina Hastings, Countess of Huntingdon. In the wake of her husband’s and sons’ deaths, Lady Huntingdon completely dedicated her life to overseeing and funding these Methodist teachings.

    The presentation of the Susanna Wesley Award of Excellence Pastor or leader: Members of the household of God, we gather today to honor a woman who has given faithful service to the church and has lead others into a deeper understanding of the faith and service to Jesus Christ. The award we present this morning is called the Susanna Wesley Award of Excellence, named for the mother of John and Charles Wesley, the founders of the Methodist movement. Susanna married 26-year-old Samuel Wesley at age 19 and the couple had 19 children, nine of whom died in infancy. Susanna’s rectory home was burned down twice and Samuel once left her and the children for over a year because of a minor dispute. On two occasions, Samuel spent time in jail due to his inability to pay his bills. The lack of money was a continual struggle for Susanna. Yet, Susanna made certain her children were well educated and trained in the classics and the faith. At one point, while her husband was in London, some 250 people attended her afternoon Sunday school class. Susanna was a remarkable woman. The woman we honor this morning possesses many of the same characteristics of Susanna Wesley. She has a distinctive intellect, a nurturing sprit, unwavering devotion and perseverance in the faith. She has served Jesus Christ and the United Methodist Church in a manner similar to the mother of Methodism. <Name>, would you please come forward. <Name> on behalf of your friends and family and the entire congregation, I present you the Susanna Wesley Award of Excellence.

    386 Book Reviews / Ecclesiology 5 (2009) 362–402 Gareth Lloyd, Charles Wesley and the Struggle for Methodist Identity (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2007), xiv + 258 pp. £51.00. ISBN 978-0-19- 929574-6 (hbk). In the struggle for Methodist identity, Charles Wesley led the losing side. Th e history of that struggle was written by the victors and their heirs, and he still lacks a full and fair biography. Th is well-written book, though based mainly on published sources and avowedly ‘not a conventional biography’, brings Charles out of his brother’s shadow, explains what he stood for and documents his contribution to Methodism, which went far beyond the hymns for which he is justly famous. It also corrects the widespread misconception that Charles’ loyalty to the Church of England made him an isolated fi gure among eight- eenth-century Methodists. Th e short account of Methodism’s earliest years is not entirely satisfactory. Th e London Foundery Society was formed by the Wesleys in 1739 in prepara- tion for their separation from the Moravian-infl uenced Fetter Lane Society; it was not an Anglican religious society that placed itself under their supervision (as suggested on p. 33). Lloyd’s claim that after 1740 Charles’ alienation from the Moravians ‘kept pace with that of his brother’ (p. 49) ignores evidence that for several months in 1741 he was drawn to them to the extent of considering reunion. For many years Charles breached church discipline just as much as John. To his life’s end he preached in parishes without the incumbent’s agreement (and, it might be added, celebrated Holy Communion in unconsecrated buildings).

Although Wesley was not isolated from his enlightened age, historians of the Enlightenment and theologians of John Wesley have only recently begun to consider Wesley in the historical context of the Enlightenment. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationship between a man, John Wesley, and an intellectual movement, the Enlightenment. As a comparative history, this study will analyze the juxtaposition of two historiographies, Wesley studies and Enlightenment studies. Surprisingly, Wesley scholars did not study John Wesley as an important theologian until the mid-1960s. Moreover, because social historians in the 1970s began to explore the unique ways people experienced the Enlightenment in different local, regional and national contexts, the plausibility of an English Enlightenment emerged for the first time in the early 1980s. As a result, in the late 1980s, scholars began to integrate the study of John Wesley and the Enlightenment. In other words, historians and theologians began to consider Wesley as a serious thinker in the context of an English Enlightenment that was not hostile to Christianity.

    The Welsh Hymn: Sacred or Secular? Nathan Munday Cardiff University Abstract. Wales has long been stereotyped as a land of song. One of the reasons for this recurring image is its historic love for the hymn — a privileged entity within Wales’s unique choral tradition. Hymns are still sung in Wales; male voice choirs, rugby internationals, pubs, funerals, weddings, and the box-like chapels retain this ancient form like a spectral ghost dance. In light of this curious afterlife, we can ask: when does a hymn become secular and what can we learn from this process if it happens at all? This essay asks these questions by visiting three typical scenes from Welsh history. These imaginary vignettes show how the crucible of the hymn was also where they were sung as well. The first is the eighteenth-century Seiat or experience meeting; the second is a nineteenth-century North Walian square, where the Temperance Movement are singing one of their hymns; and the final destination is a large, early-twentieth-century Cymanfa Ganu (Singing Festival), where hundreds of people celebrate this kinetic form in a chapel. Arguably, Welsh hymns are no longer worship songs but cultural indicators; they are residues and echoes of a former spirituality to which only a small percentage in Wales now adhere. In an article on contemporary poetry and belief, Michael Symmons Roberts writes that a lexical ‘impoverishment’ has affected poets and readers in recent years.1 He recalls the Anglo-Welsh poet David Jones’s words when discussing dead, or dying, signs and symbols in the preface to The Anathemata.

    331 TRADITIONS OF SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE Spirituality and the Hymns of Charles Wesley HARLES WESLEY WAS A SPIRITUAL leader, a preacher and theologian, C of considerable character. Even so, in comparison to his elder brother, there has been a relative dearth of scholarship and interest directed to the analysis of his genius. People tend to know that he wrote hymns like 'Love divine, all loves excelling', 'Hark, the herald angels sing', and 'O thou who tamest from above'. If pressed, most people would know little more. Charles Wesley (1707-1788) was four years younger than his brother John. It is likely that he, rather than John, began the 'Holy Club' at Oxford which attracted the nickname 'Methodist' for its detailed and organized approach to building the spiritual life. This was in 1729. The overriding objective of those who gathered for study and prayer was the pursuit of holiness. Both brothers spent a short time in Georgia, helping James Oglethorpe to found a colony there. Their endeavours were disastrous, but forced both John and Charles into a re-examination of their spiritual life. On 21 May 1738, a few days before his brother, Charles underwent a dramatic conversion. There was a vision, a calling from the scriptures ('He hath put a new song in my mouth, even a thanksgiving unto our God. Many shall see it, and fear, and shall put their trust in the Lord'), and the gift of deep peace. There began the outpouring of hymns and poems to express the rapture of Charles's mystical experience. Some of them were intensely personal: Tis Love, 'tis love! Maddox John Wesley made a regular practice of recording in his diary the books that he was reading, which has been a significant resource for scholars in considering influences on his thought.1 If Charles Wesley kept such diary records, they have been lost to us. However, he provides another resource among his surviving manuscript materials that helps significantly in this regard. On at least four occasions Charles compiled manuscript catalogues of books that he owned, providing a fairly complete sense of his personal library around the year 1765. Indeed, these lists give us better records for Charles Wesley’s personal library than we have for the library of brother John.2 The earliest of Charles Wesley’s catalogues is found in MS Richmond Tracts.3 While this list is undated, several of the manuscript hymns that Wesley included in the volume focus on 1746, providing a likely time that he started compiling the list. Changes in the color of ink and size of pen make clear that this was a “growing” list, with additions being made into the early 1750s. The other three catalogues are grouped together in an untitled manuscript notebook containing an assortment of financial records and other materials related to Charles Wesley and his family.4 The first of these three lists is titled “Catalogue of Books, 1 Jan 1757.”5 Like the earlier list, this date indicates when the initial entries were made; both the publication date of some books on the list and Wesley’s inscriptions in surviving volumes make clear that he continued to add to the list over the next few years.
