The upper photograph shows the face of the quarry as it was developed at the time of the discovery of the holotype of ?T. simpsoni in 1947. The "cap rock," which is typical of the upper part of the Kimball Formation in western Nebraska, was being blasted away (when the photograph was taken) in order to expose the fossil-bearing sediments below. The lower photograph shows the cross-bedded channel sands and silts, where so many of the Kimballian fossils are found at Coli. Loc. Ft-40. George Corner The distribution and evolution of Late Cenozoic tapirs are discussed and the forms present in Nebraska are reported. Two new species are described from the Ogallala Pliocene of Nebraska, ?Tapirus johnsoni and ?T. simpsoni. Tapirs are known in Nebraska from the Early Oligocene through the Middle Pleistocene. The northern limit of the distribution of the tapirs contracts gradually southward in North America throughout the Tertiary, and even during the Pleistocene interglacials Nebraska must have been near the northern limit of their range. Colbert ABSTRACT Two skulls of the early Oligocene Colodon from the White River Group in South Dakota are much more derived than previously reported. In particular, morphologies of the facial skeleton and narial region are surprisingly modern, including a deeply retracted nasoincisive incisure, and other indicators of prehensile proboscis develop- ment. High-resolution X-ray computed tomography was used to explore the internal anatomy of these tapiroids, and revealed frontal sinuses, and an internal facial skele- ton approaching that of modern tapirs. This not only indicates an earlier origin for these anatomical conditions than previously recorded, but in a phylogenetic context indicates that Colodon is more closely related to Tapirus than is Protapirus.     INTRODUCTION TO HORSE EVOLUTION: ANATOMICAL CHARACTERISTICS, CLASSIFICATION, AND THE STRATIGRAPHIC RECORD © 2008 by Deb Bennett, Ph.D. The impetus for producing this educational article was a telephone conversation with a man whom I normally enjoy. He’s a cowboy, and grew up on a ranch. He’s a kind fellow who has done a good job with not only a lot of horses, but also his kids, who are likewise very fine people. He’s a Christian – a commitment that I respect – and his children were not only raised in their church, but have gone on to attend Bible College. At the same time, this fellow knows that I’m a paleontologist interested in fossil horses. In our recent conversation, at one point he suddenly burst out, “I can’t understand it! Belief in evolution is simply stupid!” I was quite taken aback at his lack of respect for my point of view, because his attitude invalidates my experience and beliefs in a way that I would never impose in return – not to mention that it goes against nearly every piece of advice that St. Paul ever gave. What could possibly cause an otherwise reasonable man to make such a statement so vehemently to someone he knows it is going to offend? Why of course — because the fellow cares about me; he wants my soul to be saved, even at the cost of his own. Why does he think my soul is in danger of damnation? Because he Dr. Deb’s favorite image of “stupid believes that the words he reads in the Bible are to be taken paleontologists” (Moe, Larry, and Curly absolutely literally – no room for metaphorical interpretations, of the Three Stooges) textual criticism, or alternative readings.

Linda Gilein, 3657272 Supervisors: Dr. Wilma Wessels and Prof. Dr. Jelle Reumer Abstract Fossil skulls of oreodonts, family Merycoidodontidae (Artiodactyla), from the White River Badlands (USA) in the collection of the University Museum in Utrecht were bought late in the twentieth century by Professor Wichmann (UU). The oreodonts, now identified on species level, must have been collected from Oligocene and Eocene layers from the White River Badlands. The fossils range in age from Middle Chadronian (35.7 Ma) to Early Whitneyan (31.4 Ma). An overview of the geological setting of the White river Badlands is given as well as an overview of the Oligocene paleoclimate and paleoenvironment. Here we describe 5 genera and 6 new species of rhinoceroses recently discovered from the early Eocene to the early middle Eocene deposits of the Erlian Basin of Inner Mongolia, China. These new materials represent the earliest members of rhinocerotoids, forstercooperiids, and/or hyr- achyids, and bridge the evolutionary gap between the early Eocene ceratomorphs and middle Eocene rhinocerotoids. The phylogenetic analyses using parsimony and Bayesian inference methods support their affinities with rhinocerotoids, and also illuminate the phylogenetic relationships and biogeography of Ceratomorpha, although some discrepancies are present between the two criteria. The nearly contemporary occurrence of various rhinocerotoids indicates that the divergence of different rhinocerotoid groups occurred no later than the late early Eocene, which is soon after the split between the rhinocerotoids and the tapiroids in the early early Eocene.
