Los Angeles st. 90013 LA, CA USA Mattia Casalegno works with sculpture, sound, live media, wearables, and immersive installations. His work explores the physical and sensory perceptions of its viewers, evoking experiences that are fully immersive, sensually embodied, and/or psychologically heightened. A multidisciplinary, heavily research-based practice, his work investigates subjects in biology, neurosci- ence, and ecology. He combines the conceptual framework of each project with the exploration of unusual materials and technologies, such as glycerin soap, thermoplastics, living tissue, electro-encephalographic interfaces, etc. He’s exhibited internationally in various festivals and museums such as Mutek festival in Canada, Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts in Taiwan, MADRE and MACRO in Italy, Rome Fashion Week 2010, Cimatics festi- val and Nuit Blanche in Belgium, Optronica in UK, Le Cube - Contemporay Art Museum in France, OFFF in Spain, AVIT in Germany, Wight gallery and LACMA - Los Angeles County Museum of Arts in US. He collaborated and had commissions from some of the most successful designers and artists in the fields of fashion and contemporary arts, such as Sonia Rykiel , J.P. Gaultier , R. Capucci , Lita Albuquerque , P. Monti , FENDI . In 2001 he co-founded the project Kinotek, a seminal vjing and new-media art collective based in Rome, among the first italian collectives to use digital tools for audiovisual performances. In 2002 he joined the italian experimental audio-visual trio metaXu and since 2002 he started a prolific collaboration with the electroacustic composer and artist Martux M aka Maurizio Martusciello, performing at festivals as Mutek (CA), “Batofar Recherche l’Italie” (FR), “Sintesi”, and “International JazzFestival” in Rome (IT). During the years 2005-2011 he collaborates with various international electronic music composers in the production of numerous live audiovisual performances: “Grainscapes I” with S.Roux and G.Davis pre- miered at the Netmage festival (IT); “Info-Naturae 1.0” with composer Emanuele Errante premiered at “Sant’Arcangelo dei Teatri” festival; “Fuoriorari(a)” with E.Ghezzi, at the Toledo Gallery in Naples (IT); “X-Scape” with Martux_M premiered at “Ixem” festival; “Strutture Dissipative” premiered at RomaEuropa Festival (IT). His works are been featured internationally in publications and catalogues such as “A Touch of Code”, Ge- stalten Books; “New Media Design”, Sometti; and “Deleuze and Audiovisual Art”, Manchester Metropolitan University. He is represented by Cimatics -New Media Art Agency and writes regularly about contemporary art on the online magazine Digicult.it. He holds his MFA in Design and Media Arts from the University of California Los Angeles, and he instructed classes at UCLA and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Extensive timeline Since 2001 he with Kinotek he partecipated at several international festivals such as ContactEurope, Dis- sonanze, Arezzo Wave/Elettrowave , Italian Live Media (IT), AVIT (DE), OFFF (ES). In 2005 he performed the “Grainscapes I” audiovisual project with S.Roux (Aperstartjee) and G.Davis (Carpark, Autumn rec) at the Netmage festival (IT) and in 2007 “Info-Naturae 1.0” with composer Emanuele Errante (Apegenine rec) at Interferenze festival and Sant’Arcangelo dei Teatri (IT). In 2005 he designed live visuals for italian singer Meg (ex 99 posse, multiformis)’s italian summer tour produced by Barley Arts promotion Italia and become active in the staff of the official italian vj community portal vjcentral.it as project manager and co-curated the first DVD compilation of emerging italian Vjs produced by ArezzoWave/Electrowave 2006 festival. In 2007 curated the AV mash-up performance Fuoriorari(a) with E.Ghezzi, M.Martusciello, M. Masullo at the Toledo Gallery in Naples. In the same period curated the concept and developing of the interactive istallation “FuoriGioco”, based on the theme of how infancy is revealed throu syndacate sys- tems and news feed, with multimedia artist Carlo Caloro in collaboration with “Accademia di Arte Dram- matica Silvio D’Amico” in Rome. In 2008 he presents his own AV project “Strutture Dissipative”- inspired by the scientific and philosophi- cal findings of belgian chemist Ilya Prigogine - at Romaeuropa festival (IT) and the audiovisual installation “X-Scape 07” with Martux_M at Auditorium in Rome. In the same year he receives commissions by the production company Villa Eugenie (BE) for the design of the generative installation “Two Walls Dialogue” at the Jean Paul Gaultier “maDame” opening party and for the visual concept of “Sonia Rykiel 50’ ans” show premiered at the F/W fashion week in Paris. At the end of 2008 he co-firm withMichael Langeder the project “Disturbed City BXL”, an urban multi-platform project produced by Cimatics and exhibited at the TAG Galley, Brussels. In 2010 he is co-author of the audiovisual installation “Il Gesto Sospeso”, a collaboration with Maurizio Martusciello and fashion designer Roberto Capucci, produced by AltaRomaAltaModa and showed at the Hadrian Temple in Rome. In the same year he shows “Unstable Empathy”, an EEG based relational installa- tion sponsored by Epoc technologies, in collaboration with neuropsychologist Enzo Varriale for the Media Facade Festival 2010 and Nuit Blanche in Brussels, produced by iMAL (BE). In the same year he exhibits the video installation “Fibrillation” at the MUSE event at LACMA in Los Angeles, and shows his first of a series of wearable (a)sensorial devices, “The Open”, at the Wight Gallery in Los Angeles. The beginning of 2011 sees the emerging of his solo multi-platform project “The Rubisco Journey”, with its first iteration “RBSC.01”, exhibited at the Wight gallery in Los Angeles. In Fall 2011 he teaches the first “Tangible Feelings” workshop on “Brain-Human Interfaces for media art and live performance” pro- duced by iMal in Brussels. During the first days of 2012 he premiered the installation “Unstable Empathy 1.0” at the Future Media Festival in Taipei and leads the second iteration of the “Tangible Feelings” workshop at the DAC -Digital Arts Center- in Taipei. In winter 2012 he teaches the class “MediaTecture” at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. In June 2012 he curates visuals for the site-specific audiovisual performance “One Small Section of the Sky”, in collaboration with artist Lita Albuquerue, the LA Master Chorale and the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute. In fall 2013 he exhibits RBSC.01at Digital Life 2013, produced by RomaEuropa festival in Rome, and partecipates at LPM - Live Performers Meetings in Cape Town, South Africa.
