Daredevil Vol. 1 : Devil at Bay by Mark Waid (, Trade Paperback) for sale online | eBay One night at Fogwell's gym, a number of the bruisers that work there are enjoying a game of cards, when they're interrupted by the arrival of Daredevil, who has come looking for their boss, the Fixer. Fighting them, Daredevil reflects back to his past, and the events that led to his becoming this new costumed hero:. Daredevil is Matthew Murdock, son of "Battling" Jack Murdock, a prize fighter past his prime, who wants his son to get a real education instead of fighting. While his father tries to find honest work, his son is taunted by his peers and so begins training in secret. One day, while Jack has no choice but to sign up with the Fixer, a shady fight organizer, Matt saves a blind old man from being run over in the street, but gets run over himself. The chemical truck spills its radioactive waste on Matt, blinding him. Matt soon realizes that all of his other senses have been heightened from this accident and continues his training. Meanwhile, "Battling" Jack is experiencing a comeback that restores his self-esteem. Matt goes to law school and befriends Foggy Nelson. One night, the Fixer orders Jack to throw a fight, but when he refuses and instead wins the match, the Fixer has Jack killed. After his father's funeral, Matt graduates from law school and opens his own law firm with Foggy, and they hire a secretary named Karen Page. Meanwhile, Matt decides to avenge his father by taking up the Daredevil: Devil at Bay Volume 1 of Daredevil, creating a costume and converting his walking stick into a billy club weapon to fight crime. Returning to the present, Daredevil continues to fight Daredevil: Devil at Bay Volume 1 Fixer's men, while across the city, Foggy goes to find Matt to help him to work, but he doesn't find him either at Daredevil: Devil at Bay Volume 1 or at the office. When he asks Karen, she shows tender sympathy for Matt's condition. Back where the action is, Daredevil finds the Fixer and tracks him down to the subway with his keen senses. Switching back to his Daredevil guise, he chases the Fixer down the subway terminal Daredevil: Devil at Bay Volume 1 the Fixer suffers a severe heart attack. After the police round up the rest of his crew, Daredevil returns to his civilian guise and shows up for work, his co-workers worried about his well-being. Her full bodied long black hair and her blood red lips form a striking contrast to the light complexion of her face. She is dressed in the traditional gold embroidered costume of a Matador. Printed under her picture in letters only slightly smaller than the headline are the words, "Featuring the brave and beautiful Matadora, Carmelita Montez!" Carmelita will soon become the first woman to be allowed to fight in the Bull Ring of Madrid in over a century. She has gained her reputation for her skill and courage by fighting in the bull rings of small towns and villages. As her popularity grew, young girls looked upon her as their heroine and as their role model. Men would throw themselves upon the ground in her path in the hopes that they might experience the thrill of being trampled beneath her dainty feet. At last her popularity became so great that even the Male Chauvinist Officials did not dare to bar her from the Bull Ring of Madrid! But as Carmelita Montez's fame and popularity grew, so did the jealousy of her many male rivals.

Granted they are in black and white, and the cover bindings often seem to separate but the tales and art are still engaging as historical records of one of the most exciting times in comics; the dawn of the Marvel Age. With the first volume of The Essential Daredevil we get a collection of issues 1 thru 25 of Daredevil: The Man Without Fear Volume 1. These early and formative tales of ol’ hornhead were written, for the most part, by Stan the Man himself and it is easy to see why, after one reads these tales, we refer to Stan as The Man so often. The tales collected in this volume are not quite as sophisticated to modern readers as Frank Miller’s run or even Brubaker’s current run, but if put in their historical context they are incredibly ground breaking. Several of the villains introduced, or in the case of Electro, borrowed from other hero’s rogue galleries, border on the silly if not inane. In issue 5 we get “The Mysterious Masked Matador,” yes true believers he is what his name implies, a funny hat, stocking and slipper wearing, cape waving bull fighter! In issue 8 we get Stiltman, that’s right, a guy with hydraulic stilts, that don’t appear to have knee joints so one wonders just how does he walk over the Brooklyn Bridge as shown in a panel on page 13 of the collected issue he appears in.
