What leads them to leave one diasporic location for another location? In this sense they are also ‘twice-migrants’. Here I investigate the extent and nature of the transnational movement of diasporic Hindus and Sikhs crossing borders into the U.S. and Australia – the new dharmic sites – and how they have tackled the question of the transmission of their respective dharmas within their own communities, particularly to the younger generation. Two case studies will be presented: one from Hindus and Sikhs in Australia; the other from California (temples and gurdwaras in Silicon Valley and Bay Area). One wishes to ask and develop a hermeneutic for how the dharma traditions are reconfigured, hybridized and developed to cope and deal with the changed context, circumstances and ambience. -

Launch of Mannix Library's Special Collections Room
Launch of Mannix Library’s Special Collections Room by Kerrie Burn AFALIA (DCP) Library Manager, Mannix Library, Catholic Theological College, University of Divinity On Friday 15th February 2019, a gathering was held in Mannix Library (http://www.mannix.org.au/) in East Melbourne to celebrate the launch of the library’s new Special Collections Room. The well-attended event was also an opportunity for library staff to demonstrate the library’s newly installed ElarScan A2 scanner, as well as a new website, created to showcase the library’s Archbishop Goold Special Collection. For the past two years, Mannix Library staff have been involved with a project funded by the Australian Research Council titled A Baroque Archbishop in Colonial Australia: James Alipius Goold, 1812-1886. Goold was Melbourne’s first Catholic Archbishop and made a significant contribution to colonial Melbourne, amassing significant collections of artworks and books, and commissioning the construction of St Patrick’s Cathedral. Contributions by Mannix Library staff to the Goold project to date have included: several talks and conference presentations, including at the Goold Symposium in February 2018; research into and curation of an 15 The ANZTLA EJournal, No 22 (2019) ISSN 1839-8758 exhibition of Goold books at Catholic Theological College; the creation of a website to showcase Goold’s library (https://gooldlibrary.omeka.net/); writing articles for the project’s blog; co- authorship of a chapter on Goold’s library in a forthcoming book, The Invention of Melbourne: A Baroque Archbishop and a Gothic Architect; and preparation for an exhibition of the same name being held at the Old Treasury Building in Melbourne from 31 July 2019—January 2020. -
Archives of the Irish Jesuit Mission to Australia, 1865-1931

The archives of the Irish Jesuit Mission to Australia, 1865-1931 One hundred and fifty years ago, two Irish Jesuits arrived in Melbourne, Australia at the invitation of James Alipius Goold, bishop of Melbourne. For the next hundred years, Irish Jesuits worked mainly as missionaries, and educators in the urban communities of eastern Australia. This article will seek to explore the work of this mission from 1865 until the creation of Australia as a Vice-Province in 1931, as told through the archival prism of the documents and photographs held at the Irish Jesuit Archives. Background to Irish Jesuit Archives In 1540, Ignatius of Loyola founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Ignatius, with his secretary, Fr Juan Polanco SJ, wrote in the Jesuit Constitutions in 1558, that ‘precise instructions were given to all Jesuits on the missions to write to their superiors at home, and to those in Rome, for the dual purpose of information and inspiration.’ From this moment onwards, the Jesuits, have been acutely aware to the value of documents. ‘God has blessed the Society with an incomparable fund of documents which allow us to contemplate clearly our origins, our fundamental charism.’ Father General Pedro Arrupe SJ, 1976 A history of Irish Jesuits in Australia (1865-1931) The Irish were not the first Jesuits in Australia. Austrian Jesuits had arrived in the colony of South Australia in 1848, after their expulsion from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. -
Italians in Australia: Migration and Profile
26 gennaio-giugno 2003 Italians in Australia: Migration and Profile Francesco Cavallaro School of Civil and Environmental Engineering Nanyang Technological University, Singapore This article gives a detailed analysis and breakdown of the Italian community in Australia, its immigration pattern and phases, and its demographic and socio-economic make-up. Where relevant, comparisons are made with other immigrant minority groups in Australia. Italian immigration to Australia The initial type of immigration of Italians to Australia has been described as «drop» migration (Gentilli, 1983, p. 10). This describes the pattern where individual migrants moved to another country either alone or with very few companions. This was the norm in the last century and the beginning of this one. Later on, as soon as sizeable groups established themselves in Australia, Italians adopted a «chain» type of immigration (Tosi, 1984, p. 51; Gentilli, 1983). This term is used to describe the migration pattern when a family or an individual, after having settled down in Australia, then sponsors the migration of other members of its family or of people from the same town, who in turn are provided with an efficient means of finding help and a welcome abroad. These migration chains have been functioning since the turn of the century and have actually kept functioning across successive generations, and, thanks to the «Family Reunion» immigration policy of today, to a certain degree they are still functioning today. This form of migration favoured the formation of regional nuclei. Most notable have been the Sicilian groups of Messina in Subiaco (Western Australia), of Naso in Fremantle (Western Australia), and the group from Vizzini in Carlton and the Sicilians in Brunswick, both inner Melbourne suburbs (Victoria); the group from Casilonia and Caulonia in Adelaide (Southern Australia); and the Sicilians and Venetians of Leichhardt an inner suburb of Sydney (New South Wales) (Bertelli, 1986, 1987, p. -

B. A. Santamaria: 'A True Believer'? Brian Costar and Paul Strangio* By revisiting the existing scholarship deeding with Santamaria's career and legacy, as well as his own writings, this article explores the apparent tension between the standard historical view that Santamaria attempted to impose an essentially 'alien philosophy' on the Labor Party, and the proposition articulated upon his death that he moved in a similar ideological orbit to the traditions of the Australian labour movement. It concludes that, while there were occasional points of ideological intersection between Santamaria and Australian laborism, his inability to transcend the particular religious imperatives which underpinned his thought and action rendered'him incompatible with that movement. It is equally misleading to locate him in the Catholic tradition. Instead, the key to unlocking his motives and behaviour was that he was a Catholic anti-Modernist opposed not only to materialist atheism but also to religious and political liberalism. It is in this sense that he was 'alien'both to labor ism, the majorityofthe Australian Catholic laity and much of the clergy. It is now over six years since Bartholomew Augustine 'Bob' Santamaria died on Ash Wednesday 25 February 1998—enough time to allow for measured assessments of his legacy. This article begins by examining the initial reaction to his death, especially the eagerness of many typically associated with the political Left in Australia rushing to grant Santamaria a kind of posthumous pardon. Absolving him of his political sins may have been one thing; more surprising was the readiness to ideologically embrace the late Santamaria. The suggestion came from some quarters, and received tacit acceptance in others, that he had moved in a similar ideological orbit to the traditions of the Australian labour movement Such a notion sits awkwardly with the standard historical view that Santamaria had attempted to impose an essentially 'alien philosophy* on the Labor Party, thus explaining why his impact on labour politics proved so combustible. -

For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] Recent Italian-Australian narrative Fiction by first generation writers Abstract The publication in 2008 of the English version of Emilio Gabbrielli’s (2000) novel Polenta e Goanna and the new re-introduced edition of Rosa Cappiello’s Oh Lucky Country in 2009 constitutes something of a landmark in Italian- Australian writing. Cappiello’s novel is now the second most-published work by a first generation Italian-Australian writer after Raffaello Carboni’s (1855) Eureka Stockade. Although Italians in Australia have been writing about their experiences since the mid 1800s and have produced texts such as those by Salvado (1851), Ercole (1932) and Nibbi (1937), a coherent corpus of Italian-Australian writing has developed only after the post-World War Two migration boom which saw some 360,000 Italian-born migrants entering Australia between 1947 and 1972. Language Education in Australia: Italian and Japanese as symbols of cultural policy Joseph Lo Bianco A wide scope In its broadest sense school language education includes a wide scope of activities, policies and experiences. To speak comprehensively of such a wide-ranging field requires attention to at least the following: • the extension of standard English-speaking children's 'home' linguistic repertoire to include literate capability (reading and writing as well as critical and imaginative literacy); • extending the non-standard English of some communities to include spoken and written standard Australian English; • teaching English to non-English speakers (whether of immigrant or indigenous background); • appropriate provision for deaf, blind and other children with language-connected special needs; and • the teaching of languages other than English. Each of these five categories is itself broad and complex, all involving pedagogical specificities and many replete with ideology and interest. For example, the seemingly innocuous classification of 'languages other than English' is invested with contested issues, variable meanings, divergent ideologies and dynamic practices. The wide range of language classifications also suggests major policy shifts over time. Each of the categories contains a history: the state of knowledge at a given point in time, and prevailing views about the transmission of culture and about whether education reflects social arrangements or is part of policy intervention to change them. In the Australian case public policy on languages other than English has been a prominent instrument for nation making, seeking at different times to support official multiculturalism and to advance the nation's accommodation to its Asian geography. -

ISBN 97809980361681 The result of a symposium at Monash University’s Prato Centre in 2005, Australians in Italy is a collection of both scholarly articles and personal reflections on what its editors term the ‘Australian love affair with Italy’. Building on previous work by Gaetano Prampolini and Marie-Christine Hubert on Australian writers, artists and travellers in Tuscany, this collection widens its scope to include the whole of Italy and aims to bring current scholarship on the Australian presence in Italy up-to-date. Editors Bill Kent, Ros Pesman and Cynthia Troup have sourced contributions from a wide range of individuals including academics, artists, Australian-Italians (or Italian-Australians), members of the Roman Catholic clergy, journalists, and writers. Most, if not all of these contributors, it should be noted, are distinguished figures in their respective fields. The ex-ambassador to Italy, Rory Steele, for example, provides an overview of diplomatic relations between Australia and Italy, and Whitbread winner Peter Porter regales us with a selection of his poems that have been inspired by his travels to Italy. In short, there is no disputing the quality of the contributions in Australians in Italy, and indeed, it is a comprehensive and much-needed collection that addresses the surprising gap in studies about the relationship between Australia and Italy. That there has been so little literature produced on Australians travelling, or living, in Italy is surprising, given the increasing numbers that Cathy Crupi provides in her short survey of statistics for Australians travelling overseas and to Italy in particular. -

He then followed the artists’ trail to London taking the 1922 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition by storm with his critically acclaimed ‘Portrait Group,’ now in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria. Shy of his success, he became a scenic artist in London theatres. After 35 years away from Australia, he returned to Melbourne where he exhibited sporadically until his death in relative obscurity in 1965.
