However, our understanding of SIV diversity and evolution is limited by incomplete taxonomic and geographic sampling of NHPs, particularly in East Africa. In this study, we screened blood specimens from nine black-and-white colobus monkeys (Colobus guereza occidentalis) from Kibale National Park, Uganda, for novel SIVs using a combination of serology and “unbiased” deep-sequencing, a method that does not rely on genetic similarity to previously characterized viruses. Results: We identified two novel and divergent SIVs, tentatively named SIVkcol-1 and SIVkcol-2, and assembled genomes covering the entire coding region for each virus. SIVkcol-1 and SIVkcol-2 were detected in three and four animals, respectively, but with no animals co-infected. Phylogenetic analyses showed that SIVkcol-1 and SIVkcol-2 form a lineage with SIVcol, previously discovered in black-and-white colobus from Cameroon. Although SIVkcol-1 and SIVkcol-2 were isolated from the same host population in Uganda, SIVkcol-1 is more closely related to SIVcol than to SIVkcol-2. -

The dainty Sierra Leone Prinia was voted as Bird of the Trip (Mark Van Beirs) SIERRA LEONE 15 – 29 JANUARY 2019 LEADER: MARK VAN BEIRS 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Sierra Leone www.birdquest-tours.com The delicate Sierra Leone Prina, the exquisite Gola Malimbe, the rarely-seen Turati’s Boubou, the very smart Emerald Starling, the jewel-like Crimson Seedcracker and the extraordinary White-necked Rockfowl (or Yellow-headed Picathartes) were without a doubt the most favoured birds of our January 2019 Sierra Leone tour. Searching for Upper Guinea Forest endemics in this much maligned country is more difficult than in Ghana, due to the much less developed roads and tourist infrastructure. Most of the highly desired species require some hard work, but a number of these endemics can only be seen in Sierra Leone. The country is one of the poorest countries in the world, and is in the West mainly known through the brutal civil war of the nineteen nineties, the frightening Ebola crisis of 2014-2016 and its infamous blood diamonds. But Sierra Leone has several beautiful, well-preserved National Parks and protected areas and our local outfitter took very good care of us. We had a terrific time birding the diverse habitats of this little-known country and some of the other highlights of our tour included Hartlaub’s Duck, Blue Quail, White-backed Night Heron, Red- thighed Sparrowhawk, Red-necked Buzzard, African Finfoot, Forbes’s Plover, Great Snipe, Blue-headed Wood Dove, Great Blue, Guinea and Yellow-billed Turacos, Olive Long-tailed Cuckoo, Brown Nightjar, -

Sesay 1 ©- Sierra Leone Year Report 2017- INTRODUCTION This is the report of the activities, initiatives and the most interesting bird species that have been recorded in 2017 by myself or by others. The idea of this 39p. birding report - a first of its kind !- is : to give a global image of what has been seen and done in Sierra Leone in 2017; to hopefully open the way to new birding initiatives and field projects. The 2017 birding data have been collected from various internet platforms and sources as well as through contacting people. As a consequence, certain information is most probably missing. The enclosed annotated birdlist gives a fairly good snapshot of last year's available data. It also means you are definitely part of this year report initiative. So please, do contact us : for any further information or help; for giving us datas and feedbacks about your experience and any interesting birding records made around the country. Whatever the way you choose for birding Sierra Leone a lot is still to be done there. It is no terra incognita but for some tricky species, there still is no really reliable site in the country. It is not possible to make a modern taxonomic revision of Black-and-white Colobus (genus Colobus), in the absence of a thorough modern study to determine consistency of the diff erences between the taxa deemed to be subspecies of the two polytypic species, C. angolensis and C. guereza. Red Colobus, in particular, are by their behaviour extremely vulnerable, and one species is presumed extinct, and another has not been seen for some years. Animal communication is primarily an information exchange between living organisms belonging to the animal kingdom, able to modify their activities and behavior. This communication can take place between animals of the same species (intra-specific communication) or between animals of different species (inter-specific communication). It creates connections, synchronizes behaviors, regulates interactions, adapts to the social environment and involves an individual caller and an individual receiver. In general, animals that live in closed environments such as dense rainforests like Taï National Park (TNP) communicate more often through vocalization. Focal animal studies and Ad Libitum conducted in three groups of Olive Colobus monkey in Taï National Park indicate that this monkey possess a vocal repertoire consisted of unit calls and combination calls. The study also showed that some environmental and social parameters significantly affect the emission of different unit calls of this monkey species.
