The farm was also home to his family, studio, and many sculptures. Greeted by Bertoia upon their visit in 1976, the consignors of the present work were given the full tour of the artist’s barn (which doubled as his showroom), where Bertoia played several of the sonambient sculptures on view, displaying their otherworldly atmospheric tones. The “Willow” sculpture, acquired that same day, is a scarce and beloved example of Bertoia’s works drawn from nature, related to the artist’s Bush and Dandelion form sculptures. Its steel wires drape gracefully, swaying and undulating akin to the tree branches of its namesake. Bertoia himself wrapped the work and packed it into their car for safe transport back to their home. Less than two years later, Harry Bertoia passed away while at his farm, while his Willow has lived on in the couple’s home, made all the more special by the unique experience the owners had while visiting with the artist, a true icon of 20th century art and design. • Paintings by Streeter Blair (January 12–February 7)
1960 Paintings by Streeter Blair (January 12–February 7) A publisher and an antique dealer for most of his life, Streeter Blair (1888–1966) began painting at the age of 61 in 1949. Blair became quite successful in a short amount of time with numerous exhibitions across the United States and Europe, including several one-man shows as early as 1951. He sought to recapture “those social and business customs which ended when motor cars became common in 1912, changing the life of America’s activities” in his artwork. He believed future generations should have a chance to visually examine a period in the United States before drastic technological change. This exhibition displayed twenty-one of his paintings and was well received by the public. Three of his paintings, the Eisenhower Farm loaned by Mr. & Mrs. George Walker, Bread Basket loaned by Mr. Peter Walker, and Highland Farm loaned by Miss Helen Moore, were sold during the exhibition. [Newsletter, memo, various letters] The Private World of Pablo Picasso (January 15–February 7) A notable exhibition of paintings, drawings, and graphics by Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), accompanied by photographs of Picasso by Life photographer David Douglas Duncan (1916– 2018). Over thirty pieces were exhibited dating from 1900 to 1956 representing Picasso’s Lautrec, Cubist, Classic, and Guernica periods. These pieces supplemented the 181 Duncan photographs, shown through the arrangement of the American Federation of Art. The selected photographs were from the book of the same title by Duncan and were the first ever taken of Picasso in his home and studio.

BHMS 2016 246 Chapter 18 The Rise of Marianist Lay Communities Since the early 1900s, a significant development for Marianists has been the gradual reappearance of adult lay communities. This development into the twenty-first century is traced in the following short chronology of events. General History 1920s Mass Leagues, members were the parents of SM and their purpose was to support perseverance of their sons in the order. During spiritual and social gatherings, collections would be held to raise money to have Masses said for the brothers. These Leagues were located in Detroit (1921) and Baltimore (1925) as well as other cities. Membership later included people other than parents. 1930- Chaminade Clubs: Baltimore (1939), Dayton (1944), International Meeting (1948). (see also: 1948 Marianist Co-workers: Miriam Guilds, Parents’ Groups) 1946 First Teacher Institute held as result of new enthusiasm among SM for high school Sodalities. At this first meeting, it was decided to publish a magazine called Marianist Sodality Moderator. John Dickson was the first editor. 1947 Sodality Secretariat, an office to coordinate the high school Sodality efforts of the Cincinnati Province and link these two groups of adults forming around Marianist interests.
