Provenance: Purchased directly from the artist by the current owner, Jan. 3rd, 1976 Includes original receipt with sculpture rendering

Harry Bertoia’s legendary farm in Bally, PA was many things: purchased with the funds he received from the design of his iconic Diamond Chair for Knoll International, the rural Berks County locale allowed Bertoia an easy commute to Knoll’s Design and Development space in nearby East Greenville. The farm was also home to his family, studio, and many sculptures. Greeted by Bertoia upon their visit in 1976, the consignors of the present work were given the full tour of the artist’s barn (which doubled as his showroom), where Bertoia played several of the sonambient sculptures on view, displaying their otherworldly atmospheric tones. The “Willow” sculpture, acquired that same day, is a scarce and beloved example of Bertoia’s works drawn from nature, related to the artist’s Bush and Dandelion form sculptures. Its steel wires drape gracefully, swaying and undulating akin to the tree branches of its namesake. Bertoia himself wrapped the work and packed it into their car for safe transport back to their home. Less than two years later, Harry Bertoia passed away while at his farm, while his Willow has lived on in the couple’s home, made all the more special by the unique experience the owners had while visiting with the artist, a true icon of 20th century art and design. C He chooses, however, to challenge the textbook definition of $3,000-5,000 abstraction: his sculptures are not extractions or adaptations of existing forms, but rather explorations into the self and nature. At first glance, “Abe Lincoln,” appears to be a simple form, created as a vessel to showcase a single hair from the 16th President. That withstanding, in an interview for Bomb Magazine (Spring 2012), Long explains “...that’s a minimal surface. It’s a sphere pulled to a point, and when it comes to that final point, that’s where Abraham Lincoln’s hair comes out of it. For me, the minimal surface is this ultrageneralized form, exhibiting a minimum of surface difference, but at this point of extension, it takes on a radical subjectivity as you understand this line is also a person, in this case Lincoln, a DNA structure, and all the history around him.” C 112 $4,000-6,000 114

Exhibited: Light Breaks Where No Sun Shines, December 2010, Bortolami Gallery at the Webster, Miami Beach

Performance-based artist Aaron Young creates raw, confrontational situations, resulting in monolithic works standing as a testament to the performance. Among his best-known works are his pieces in which motorcycles are ridden across plywood, the resulting tire marks creating a network of abstract patterns. Roberta Young of the New York Times equated “Greeting Card,” his motorcycle performance held at the Park Avenue Armory in 2007, to “watching gladiators at the Roman Colosseum.” Often compared to controversial artist Chris Burden, Young has a penchant for aggressive, masculine works that are all things loud, dirty and bombastic. For this 2010 work, 143 “Landscape,” Young, in a continuation of these performances, produced the work by doing “burnouts” on a motorcycle while aimed at the sheet of glass. The eventual tire failure from being ridden to destruction caused molten rubber tire chunks to spray onto the 143 glass surface. Finally, Young poured liquid glass Aaron Young overtop the shredded rubber to hold it into American, b. 1972 place, creating an ad-hoc glass and rubber Weekend King 2009 sandwich.
