The farm was also home to his family, studio, and many sculptures. Greeted by Bertoia upon their visit in 1976, the consignors of the present work were given the full tour of the artist’s barn (which doubled as his showroom), where Bertoia played several of the sonambient sculptures on view, displaying their otherworldly atmospheric tones. The “Willow” sculpture, acquired that same day, is a scarce and beloved example of Bertoia’s works drawn from nature, related to the artist’s Bush and Dandelion form sculptures. Its steel wires drape gracefully, swaying and undulating akin to the tree branches of its namesake. Bertoia himself wrapped the work and packed it into their car for safe transport back to their home. Less than two years later, Harry Bertoia passed away while at his farm, while his Willow has lived on in the couple’s home, made all the more special by the unique experience the owners had while visiting with the artist, a true icon of 20th century art and design.
