Sincerely, Ron Luniewski President Xpressbet 866.88XPRESS (866.889.7737) Best of the Best Below are the most interesting Breeders’ Cup runners with expert comments. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1 CATON BREDAR (Distaff) Having followed Royal Delta throughout her long and distinguished journey, I can’t wait to see how she rebounds from defeat (as she has in the past) in the Distaff. She will have to run the race of her life to turn the tables on Princess of Sylmar--which I believe Bill Mott has her poised to do. Throw in a filly the caliber of Authenticity, said to be training better than ever, and you have the makings of another race for the ages, with the reigning champion the star of Friday’s show. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2 BOB NEUMEIER (Filly & Mare Turf) My interest is piqued for the fascinating Filly & Mare Turf, featuring Dank, who added some cash into my betting account in the Beverly D. at Arlington Park. While she is a lovely filly, she will be facing the iron in this heat, possibly including The Fugue, who appears to be entering this year’s edition in better form than in 2012. The Fugue encountered Ventura Highway-like traffic in last year’s BC event. MIKE BATTAGLIA (Turf) Point of Entry hasn’t raced since June, but trainer Shug McGaughey wouldn’t run him if he wasn’t fit and ready. He loves the mile and one-half distance and was arguably the best horse in this race last year. He looks like the bet of the day for me. JEREMY PLONK (Mile) It’s fascinating what one loss by Wise Dan did to this division. Last year we had a record-low field size and it seemed no one would want a piece of him this year either the way he smashed the course record in the Woodbine Mile. One loss at Keeneland, and the Euro contingent now boasts winners of the Sussex (Toronado), British Champions Mile (Olympic Glory), French Guineas (Flotilla) and the Irish Guineas (Magician). If you like Wise Dan, and you should, send a “thank you card” to Silver Max for the inflated price and deeper exotics. JENNIE REES (Classic) The Breeders’ Cup Classic has much of last year’s field back, plus the exciting Graydar. Coolmore once again is taking a shot with Declaration of War. Improving 3-year-olds Palace Malice and Will Take Charge add interest. But I want to get 9-1 again on defending champ Fort Larned. DICK JERARDI (Classic) I want to see if Game On Dude can withstand strong early heat, hold off all the terrific closers and look as good in the Classic as he has looked in all his other 2013 races. THURSDAY, JANUARY 25, 2018 GUN RUNNER DRAWS SIRES WITH FIRST RUNNERS IN 2018: WHERE'S THE VALUE? by Chris McGrath TEN IN PEGASUS This is Part II of a three-part series exploring Kentucky sires that offer the best value. To read Part I, click here. It's hard to know quite what Cairo Prince (Pioneerof The Nile) (Airdrie, $25,000) must do to live up to his phenomenal sales debut: very few sires get two fee hikes before they have had a runner. He caught a rising tide in sharing a sire with American Pharoah and Classic Empire, and then blew everyone away with his physicals. Things have gone so dreamily so far that he is nearly on a hiding to nothing, but if enough of them can run then even his revised fee could easily hold up. Having started with the highest fee of his intake, Will Take Charge (Unbridled's Song) (Three Chimneys, $30,000) punched his weight impressively with his first weanlings and his yearlings followed through to put him top of the averages, at $169,190. He represents a pretty obvious package, and soaked up a lot more action than some of his sire's other sons.
