Memories of Television in Australia
Sue Turnbull and Stephanie Hanson AFFECT, UPSET AND THE SELF: MEMORIES OF TELEVISION IN AUSTRALIA Abstract In a recent survey inviting people to outline some of their memories of television and its place in their lives, one of the questions asked was: ‘Can you explain why these particular television memories have stayed with you?’ While the responses to this question were complex and individual, some common themes emerged. These included questions of affect; experiences that were ‘beyond the norm’; and moments of self-identification. While the younger age group (15–45 years) slightly favoured the ‘self-identification’ and ‘affect’ categories, for the 46+ combined groups, the major category was the ‘beyond the norm’. The second-most cited factor, given by approximately 50 per cent of the respondents, was that a television memory is made when an event on television somehow becomes intertwined with the life of the individual. In many instances, the event was recalled as a formative or life-changing occurrence. While it is difficult to draw too many conclusions from the data in relation to gender, given that there were more female participants than male, when the data were recast to show percentages within each gender group, it was interesting to note that the male participants rated ‘affect’ most highly while females rated ‘self-identification’ as the most significant factor in the making of a television memory. This article explores these findings in more detail and examines the implications of these data for thinking about the relationship between the medium of television, television audiences and the formation of memories. -

Drawing on 21 oral history interviews, it is posited that the Crown Court clerk was a pivotal player in the legal system during this period and their contribution to the performance of law has been largely neglected. Though they did not enjoy the economic, social and cultural capital of judges and barristers, or play a central role in the construction and determination of legal issues in hearings, they were chiefly responsible for the smooth functioning of the courtroom, and were constantly working to maintain order and facilitate the flow of proceedings. -

Most of the information for Images and Industry: television drama production in Australia is taken from original interviews with television production staff (Moran 1985). Ending the Affair, as well as archival work, draws on ‘over ten years of watching … Australian television current affairs’ (Turner 2005, xiii). Moran’s Guide to Australian TV Series draws exhaustively on extant archives: the ABC Document Archives, material sourced through the ABC Drama department, the Australian Film Commission, the library of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School, and the Australian Film Institute (Moran 1993, xi). -

ANNE CHARLESTON Anne is beloved by Australian audiences for her long-running roles as Madge Bishop in Neighbours and Deidre Kean in Prisoner . The success of Neighbours in the United Kingdom in particular brought Anne international recognition. She subsequently relocated to Ireland and performed a variety of roles for television and the stage in the UK. These included Lily Butterfield in Emmerdale , Dossa in the BBC co- production Dossa and Joe , Jessie in The Calendar Girls and a guest role in Holby City. Anne returned to Australia recently to appear in Wentworth and has made Australia her home once again. Tommy Dysart 05/08
TOMMY DYSART 05/08 Tommy began his career thirty years ago in Queensland singing professionally with a quartet called "The Swingettes" . Shortly after he enrolled at NIDA when it opened in 1959. On graduating, Tommy was given the title role "Volpone" at the 1962 Adelaide Festival of Arts. Returning to Sydney he signed up for two years on the Tivoli Circuit throughout Australia and New Zealand with "The Black and White Minstrel Show" ; also for the Tiv he appeared in the pantomime "The Wizard of Oz" and the drama-ballet "Snowy" . Tommy made his debut with the Old Tote Theatre in their production of "The Caucasian Chalk Circle" , followed by role of Montano in "Othello" . The next couple of years were spent performing in J.C. Williamson's "Funny Girl" which toured all capital cities in Australia, followed by "Man of La Mancha" which again toured the Continent for approximately a year and a half. Tommy was chosen next to play the title role in the Doncaster Theatre Restaurant Show "Mikado 69" in Sydney. His next shows were "The Barber of Seville" and "Saint Joan" for the Pageant Theatre Company touring the metropolitan and country areas of NSW; then came a role in "Fire on the Snow" for the Arts Council of NSW, Tommy again re-joined the Pageant Theatre Co. to direct and play in "Odyssey" in conjunction with the NSW Education Department. Following this he landed the role of the Man from Corinth in Sir Tyrone Guthries' brilliant Australian production "Oedipus Rex" - which played all capital cities. Shortly after this tour he was chosen for a role at the Sydney Cell Block Theatre in "Fortune in Men's Eyes" , then co-starred with Miss Anna Russell in an independent production - "Breath of Spring".
