If Charlie Brown went pro, he would have been a "Washington Senator.

"Damn Yankees" is based on "The Year the Yankees Lost The Pennant", which was published in 1954, and set in 1958. Ironically, 1954 was the first year the Yankees hadn't won the pennant since 1948. In 1955, when "Damn Yankees" premiered on Broadway, the Yankees won the pennant but lost the . In 1956, The Yankees started winning it all again. Yes, they won in 1958, too.

It is a rare musical that can satisfy not only the fan of musical comedy, the patron of more serious Faustian dramas, and also the nitpicking fan whose spouse drags them to the theatre in the weeks around Opening Day. I have long wanted to present a production of "Damn Yankees" that provides all three, and am happy you are here to laugh with (or at), cheer for and perhaps have a heartstring or two tugged by our hapless Senators.

But the main reason that this lifelong Mets fan has enjoyed the months of planning and weeks of rehearsals leading to this perfor- mance is because, especially after last October, I vehemently agree with the performance's topic sentence. It is unfortunate to note that and , who first brought Lola and Applegate to us on both stage and screen, both passed away since we started working on this production last year. We believe this is only a coin- cidence, and hope that they have a good view of our stage from up there.

Play ball!! -Doug Brook, Director

6 Did you know?

• that "The Yearthe Yankees Lost the Pennant" was written in 1952, and set its Senators' defeat of the Yankees in 1958. Interestingly, in 1955, the also rather hapless Brooklyn Dodgers actually defeated the Yankees in the World Series, and the Milwaukee Braves did the same in 1957? • that there were no Major League teams in California, Texas, Canada, or anywhere west or south of St. Louis in the mid-1950's? • that the home run record was 60, set by of the Yankees in 1927. (Mark McGwire hit 70 for St. Louis in 1999 to break ' "unbreakable" record of 61 in 1961)? • that has been integrated since Jackie Robinson signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1945? • that the Giants played in New Yorkthrough 1957 (they were the Gothams in the 1880's) and later moved to San Francisco? • that in the mid-1950's nobody currently playing for any Major League Baseball team was born yet-not even Cal Ripken?

Anita also occasionally plays with TheatreWorks. By day, she is an engineer at Lockheed Martin and it's great to have Anita on our staff She thanks Matt for his love and support! We do, too! DEAN SCOTT-(Choreographer) Dean also makes his staff debut with WVLO, but this stage feels like home to him, he's been on it so much. He was seen here with SDG in "State Fair"and "The Goodbye Girl". Since beginning his career in musical theater at the age of 7 when he performed the role of Jack Frost in the 2nd grade winter concert, he has performed, choreographed and/or directed hundreds of productions. For PYT he choreographed and directed "Fiddler On the Roof", "Little House on the Prairie", "Here's Love" and "Godspell" as well as "State Fair" and "Oklahoma!" for SJCMT. His most favorite roles include Mike in ''", Mr. Mistoffelees in "" and Archibald Craven in SCp's recent production of "Secret Garden". He extends his thanks and love to his assistant and future wife, Kristen Burke, and especially, to Cody & Tyler. BRIAN SHEVELENKO-(Assistant Director) Another new- comer to our staff, Brian attended Carnegie Mellon University where he srudied (among other things) acting, directing, and worked on a variety of productions. In Chicago, Brian worked

15 with a variety of community theaters there, acting as Stage Manager/Assistant Director for "Guys & Dolls"; Stage Manager for "Grease"; Assistant Director for "Lend Me A Tenor", etc. His local credits include "Goodbye Girl" with SDG; Stage Manager of "Wizard Of Oz" with SCP; and in addition to this production is currently working as co-Stage Manager for SCp's production of "Crazy For You". KRISTEN BURKE-(Assistant Choreographer) Kristen also joins us for her first production with WVLO. She has exten- sive dance and choreography experience in the areas of tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical and Irish Step Dancing. She is a former Miss Santa Clara County and has participated in local performance activities for more than 25 years. Her local theatrical credits include performances in productions of "Grease", "Godspell" and in SDG's "The Goodbye Girl" as well as SCp's "West Side Story" and "Secret Garden". A graphic designer/art director at The Corsi Group in San Jose, Kristen first worked with Dean Scott on PYT's production of "Godspell" and later on SJCMT's "State Fair" last spring. Since they are planning a June wedding, she and Dean expect to work on many more projects after "Damn Yankees". Much happiness on your future collaborations! LINDA WALLITNER-(Production Stage Manager) Linda started her theatre career in 1961, came to WVLO in 1997, and has worked most shows on the technical staff since. She co-stage managed last season's productions of "Phantom" and "Will Rogers Follies" and this season's opening show, "High Society", with her husband, Bob. This season she has become the Resident Production Stage Manager for WVLO. She also appeared in the ensembles of "Brigadoon" and "Cabaret" (which she co-produced) for SDG. Her very favorite roles included Bloody Mary in "South Pacific", Nikki in "Sweet Charity" and the Housekeeper in "Man of La Mancha". Linda is very happy to back stage managing, because she loves working so closely with the staff, cast and crew at WVLO. And we are delighted to have this dedicated couple on our staff. BOB WALLITNER-(Stage Manager) Bob returns for his 4th Stage Managing position for WVLO. He co-stage managed last season's "Phantom", "Will Rogers Follies" and this season's opening production of "High Society". This season, Bob will serve as Resident Stage Manager for WVLO. He has worked on the produc- tion staff for many of the shows, including Assistant Stage Manager for "The Boy Friend" & "They're Playing Our Song". For SDG, Bob co-stage managed "Com- pany" and also served as Assistant Stage Manager for many of their other produc- tions. Bob is delighted that he got involved with the 'magic of theater', enabling him to work closely with the wonderful people he has met.
