Library construction begins, projected completion 2008 By Rachel R.Dobson frostybluel [email protected] The new construction is moving forward at a rapid pace. The old home ofhuman resources, known as the Blue Building, which has been on campus since the 1960s, is already being torn down. The trees have fallen to become just a memory, and progress has a run- ning start. Access to the library from Sweetheart Circle will be confined to the right hand porch entrance. Similarly, access from the front steps is limited to the left side. The area that is now fenced off will not change for two years while the wing is being built, so the above changes will be in effect for quite a while. In the previous 89 years, stemming back to the 17th Amendment - which allows voters rather than legislatures to select their state's U.S. senators - only one Georgia senator came from the House. Wyche Fowler was elected in 1986, then was defeated in his first re-election bid six years later. So what has changed? University of Georgia political scientist Charles Bullock speculates a number of things, including a more heightened statewide visibility for key members of the House delegation and a reduced level ofanimosity between Atlantaand more rural parts of the state. Isakson and Majette are two ,of the state's more junior members of the House. Majette is one of five freshmen * in the delegation, and Isakson won a 1999 special election to succeed for- mer House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Still, they both had extensive experience in public service prior to their congressional work.

HOT SEAT ]| CRIME Georgia car thief sentenced to 10 years in car theft scheme

ATLANTA - An Atlanta man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for stealing cars from his neighbors and selling them over a five-year period. Mark Avery Husbands, 35, copied down vehicle identification numbers off cars in his neighborhood and had duplicate keys made, said Peter McFar- lane, an investigator with the state Department of Motor Vehicle Safety's auto crime unit. Husbands, who pleaded guilty Monday to 21 counts of theft and forgery, gave the buyers phony bills of sale and title certificates. He used fake names and a fictitious South Carolina address. Kyle Askew "He made around $80,000 that we know about," said McFarlane, who '94 Acura Integrg GSR teamed with Atlanta police to nab the thief. In addition to the prison sentence, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Age: 18 Gino Brogdon also ordered Husbands to pay restitution to his 26 victims and their insurance companies.
