A graduate of Memorial University with a degree in Engineering, Fred has been with the company for 13 years. Fred talked about the Port Alberni mill with tremendous pride. He was asked to become the General Manager two years ago after various stints in other areas of the company Next Chairperson: including one in Port Alberni. The Port Alberni mill produces th 1.5 million tonnes of paper annually comprised of four grades: February 4 Claude Lavertu 18% newsprint; 32% uncoated mechanical, 12% directory and 15% coated paper (from throw away to National Geographic February 11th quality). Pat Kermeen Fred stated that 45 coastal trees produce enough lumber to build one family home, produce 10 tonnes of paper, and th February 13 enough electricity to power one residence for 6 months. “Trees Board of Directors are cut down to make houses”, he said. Only the by-products that aren’t used as saw logs are used in pulp. The competition February 18th to obtain fibre is fierce in part fueled by the off-shore export of Joe Lamoureux Fred Chinn raw logs. February 25th Referencing environmental concerns, Fred indicated that effluent quality for biochemical Marek Rozwadowski oxygen demand and total suspended particulates far exceeds government regulations. “There th has been a 98% reduction in air particulates since 1990”, he said. Greenhouse gas emissions March 4 have seen an 86% reduction, ranking the Port Alberni mill as #10 most efficient plant worldwide in the paper making category. (cont’d) January is Rotary Awareness Month Kudos to: Past Assistant District Governor – Ed Fougner for the great (Cont’d): job he did providing leadership The thermo-mechanical operation during Theresa’s, Pam’s and Joe’s employs 330 people, most of whom live term as Club President!! in the Alberni Valley. Over 100 employees were hired within the past 24 months. The mill estimates 1375 spin off COMING EVENTS jobs are the result of its operations and include some of the major contractors Joint District 5020 and 5050 Conference such as Walco Industries Ltd, Haggard Whistler, BC Trucking Ltd, Rayner and Bracht Ltd and May 2-4, 2014 our own JW Berry Trucking Ltd. Some of the challenges facing Catalyst are recruitment in engineering, trades and management; B.C Hydro rates (the 9% recently announced increase will cost the company $3.4 million which forces the company to find ways to absorb it with improved efficiencies); fibre source on the west coast of the island, shrinking paper markets (cost and quality will always be #1) and shipping costs due to location (all paper is trucked to Crofton to be barged to the lower mainland for onward distribution). Under Fred’s leadership as Mill Manager, the community has seen a huge surge in community involvement, which includes support of youth, heritage, literacy, sports, arts, community organizations such as the Toy Run and a healthy relationship with the City of Port Alberni. And for all of the above, we are all truly appreciative. +++++++++ District Leadership Training Seminar March 29-30 The Rotary Foundation This event is all about learning, and with over 50 training Donation info: Donations by mail; seminars to choose from, there is something for everyone.
