Prime time of the season What a thrilling finale to the home-and-away season of the Peter Jackson VFL we witnessed last weekend. The minor premiership changed hands in the final round with the Casey Scorpions claiming that honour from Collingwood, while Footscray jumped into the double- chance position and Essendon produced a victory to leave Richmond in ninth. This weekend being AFL-free, we look forward to a bumper opening to the VFL Legendairy Finals Series, with Dairy Australia once again supporting the business end of the season at IKON Park, Casey Fields and North Port Oval. The TAC Cup finals also get underway, with supporters able to witness the next crop of elite U18 talent showcase their wares at Box Hill City Oval on Saturday and IKON Park on Sunday. Sunday night will be an historic moment in the TAC Cup’s 25-year history, with the final rankings for the TAC Cup Top 25 players of all time to be announced. It is pleasing to have so many of the nominated 25 players – current and former AFL stars – attending Morrish Medal night when the announcement will be made. For those not lucky enough to secure an invitation, you can be part of the night via our live video stream on taccup.com.au. Good luck to all clubs participating in finals, as well as the off icials that have been rewarded for consistent form throughout the season and will be umpiring our games across each competition. Finally, the end of the VFL season was not a happy one for the Frankston Football Club, which has gone into voluntary administration. AFL Victoria has been briefed regarding the club’s current financial situation and we will work with them through this process to help them move forward. Frankston has made a positive step in addressing its current circumstances, with the future of the club a key priority in their move to hand over to administrators. Footscray’s Mitch Hannan 2nd QUALIFYING FINAL Collingwood (2nd) vs Williamstown (3rd) Saturday September 3, 2.00pm, IKON Park The big birds of the competition will be preparing for a battle royal at the contests in this one. The Magpies and Seagulls are in the VFL’s upper echelon for contested possessions and clearances per game, with Williamstown’s midfield brigade of captain Ben Jolley, Michael Gibbons and Willie Wheeler – served by dominant ruckman Nick Meese – part of the league’s no.1 team in those departments. In the teams’ only meeting of 2016 in Round 7, Collingwood eff ectively matched the Seagulls in the contests and walked away with a five-point triumph at the Holden Centre. Skipper Jack Hellier, along with AFL-listers Brent Macaff er, Matthew Goodyear and ruckman Jarrod Witts, broke even with Williamstown’s star quartet and helped Travis Cloke boot four goals. Cloke will be absent this week though, and the Magpies will need to find scoreboard contributions from unheralded forwards like Gus Borthwick, Jordan Collopy and Lachlan Ferguson to counter the potency of Williamstown goalkickers such as Dylan Conway, Ayce Cordy and Sam Dunell. Last week’s return from serious injury of Collingwood tall forward Michael Still will help, but his opportunities will depend on what happens in the middle.

1st QUALIFYING FINAL Williamstown’s Sam Dunell Casey Scorpions (1st) vs Footscray (4th) Saturday September 3, 2.00pm, Casey Fields The Scorpions enter this clash having lost their last 11 finals – including four straight-sets exits – since winning an elimination final in 2008. Adding to nerves will be the fact the club’s four losses in 2016 have come at the hands of the teams placed second to fift h, including a defeat to Footscray in Round 15 at VU Whitten Oval. That day, the Bulldogs came from 30 points down at the last break with a strong wind to pip Casey by a point. They conceded plenty of possession to their opponents but laid 36 more tackles to keep prolific Scorpions Alex Neal-Bullen, Jack Trengove and panicked. Casey loves to handball through traff ic and sweep the ball forward to goalkickers Liam Hulett, Tim Smith and Sam Weideman, and the Bulldogs will again need pressure kings like Mitch Honeychurch, Liam Nash and Jordan Russell to bring the heat. On the other side of the ball, Footscray has struggled with conversion in attack this year and will need to manufacture goals from a mobile forward group containing mid-sized options such as Bailey Dale, Nick Jamieson and Mitch Hannan.

4 www.vfl.com.au Essendon’s Nash Holmes 2nd ELIMINATION FINAL Port Melbourne (6th) vs Sandringham (7th) Sunday September 4, 2.40pm, North Port Oval This match will be a contrast in styles between two teams currently lacking their best form. Port has lost to contenders Williamstown, Collingwood and Geelong in its last five games, while the Zebras have dropped six of their last seven. The first of those losses was to the Borough by 22 points at Trevor Barker Beach Oval in Round 15 when Port shocked Sandringham with a nine- goal-to-two first quarter. The Borough had a clear in the middle that day, dominating contested possessions and clearances on the back of hard-nuts Tom O’Sullivan, Toby Pinwill and Matt Arnot. The Zebras have the likes of Myke Cook and Kade Answerth to provide resistance at the coalface, but their strength instead lies in the ability of players such as Eli Templeton and Elliot Le Grice to regularly hit targets by foot and set up easy shots on goal for their forwards. Meanwhile, the Borough’s disposal eff iciency ranks second-last in the VFL, highlighting the importance of the skilful Damian Mascitti. His teammates can sure win the ball, but can they then use it to good eff ect?

1st ELIMINATION FINAL Geelong (5th) vs Essendon (8th) Saturday September 3, 2.40pm, North Port Oval The Cats will take heart from when they last met Essendon in Round 16 and won by 78 points at Simonds Stadium. Geelong recorded 28 more scoring shots that day as prolific AFL-listers Darcy Lang, George Horlin-Smith and James Parsons ran amok. But earlier in their Jekyll-and-Hyde season, the Bombers prevailed by 21 points in Round 5 at Windy Hill, with Mark Jamar dominating in the ruck and giving and Jackson Merrett first use of the ball. The midfield battle will be an intriguing aspect of this game as well, given both teams rank behind every other top-eight side in terms of contested possessions, clearances and tackles per game. Developing Irishman Padraig Lucey will need to counter Jamar’s influence in the ruck and provide Cats hard-nuts such as Tom Atkins, Sam McLachlan and James Tsitas with opportunities to get the ball out in space, where their team has become no.1 in the VFL for disposal eff iciency. Essendon has to aim to shut down Geelong’s slick ball movement – or better, have the likes of captain Dan Coghlan, Aaron Heppell and Nash Holmes win the ball first and then Sandringham’s play keepings-off . 2nd QUALIFYING FINAL Geelong Falcons (2nd) vs North Ballarat Rebels (3rd) Saturday September 3, 2.00pm, Box Hill City Oval The Rebels come into this game as one of the form teams of the TAC Cup, having won 12 of 14 games since starting the season 0-3. One of those early losses was to the Falcons by 28 points at Simonds Stadium in Round 1, when dangerous Geelong forwards Jack Henry and Brett Blair combined for nine goals. North Ballarat couldn’t overcome the Falcons in Round 10 at Eureka Stadium either though, having a six-game winning streak ended by a 23-point loss. Pressure in the midfield will be vital to the Rebels shutting down Geelong, which is the competition’s top team for points scored in 2016. The onus will be on the likes of Jarrod Berry, Willem Drew and James Gow to limit the eff ectiveness of Falcons ball-winners like Max Augerinos, Lockey McCartney and James Worpel, or likely be punished on the scoreboard. However, North Ballarat’s prospective no.1 NAB AFL Draft pick Hugh McCluggage could be the ace in the pack – the midfielder’s classy skills and goalkicking ability (23 goals in 10 TAC Cup games this year) could prove match- winning. Louis Pinnuck of the Murray Bushrangers James Gow of the North Ballarat Rebels 1st QUALIFYING FINAL Dandenong Stingrays (1st) vs Murray Bushrangers (4th) Sunday September 4, 2.00pm, IKON Park Barely anything has separated these teams in 2016, with the Bushrangers winning their first encounter by four points at Norm Minns Oval in Round 7 and the Stingrays prevailing by a solitary point at Shepley Oval in Round 16. Murray will need to keep an eye on Dandenong’s versatile forward line, which includes smaller goalkickers Sam Fowler and Dan Allsop as well as taller options Josh Battle and Tom De Koning, while regular defender Hunter Clark was the hero in Round 16 when he kicked the match-winning major just seconds before the final siren. The Stingrays have conceded the fewest points in the TAC Cup this year, but Clark’s fellow backmen such as Oscar Clavarino and Mason De Wit will have their hands full minding a battery of Bushrangers tall forwards including Todd Marshall, Esava Ratugolea and Zac Sproule. With such potency inside 50, Murray needs its deep group of midfielders – including the likes of Will Brodie, James Cousins, Harry Morrison, Louis Pinnuck and Isaac Wallace – to win the ball in close and get it forward quickly.

12 www.vfl.com.au 2nd ELIMINATION FINAL Oakleigh Chargers (6th) vs Calder Cannons (7th) Saturday September 3, 11.30am, Box Hill City Oval As they’ve done the last two years, the Chargers seem to be coming good at just the right time. They’ve won their last three games and have their first-choice line-up playing together consistently aft er interrupted years due to national duties, school football commitments and injury. That’s bad news for the Cannons, who probably enter this match as underdogs despite defeating Oakleigh by eight points at Rams Arena in Round 9. Many of Calder’s top players stood up that day, with Muhammad Saad bagging seven of his team’s nine goals, and Brad Bernacki, Hayden Blythe, Zach Guthrie and Ben Ronke all integral to the victory. They’ll be up against a Chargers midfield now building chemistry between ball-winners such as Taylin Duman, Jack Higgins and Lachlan Walker, who’ll be looking to hit up Vic Metro hero Pat Kerr as well as Nick Larkey and Toby Wooller inside 50, with Josh Daicos and Dion Johnstone buzzing around their feet. Up the other end, TAC Cup leading goalkicker Karl Brown will likely need to take the points against opponents such as Jordan Ridley for the Cannons to prevail.

Hayden Blythe of the Calder Cannons Jordan Gallucci of the Eastern Ranges 1st ELIMINATION FINAL Sandringham Dragons (5th) vs Eastern Ranges (8th) Sunday September 4, 11.30am, IKON Park Aft er only dropping out of the top four for the first time in 2016 following Round 16, this could be a real danger game for the Dragons. Sandringham boasts an array of stars from Vic Metro’s successful NAB AFL U18 Championships campaign, but Eastern has top-end talent equal to perhaps any team. Making predictions for this clash diff icult is the fact that when the Dragons defeated the Ranges by 43 points at Box Hill City Oval in Round 9, most of the teams’ best players were absent. But inject potential match- winners such as Oliver Florent, Andrew McGrath and Tim Taranto into Sandringham’s midfield and Callum Brown, Dylan Clarke and Jordan Gallucci into Eastern’s on-ball division and the scene is set for a battle royal at the contests. However, the deciding duels might instead involve ruckmen Lachlan Filipovic (Dragons) and Sam Hayes (Ranges), or Eastern’s defence – led by All Australian key back Jack Maibaum – against Sandringham tall forwards Hayden McLean and Isaac Morrisby. Dragons defenders would want to keep an eye on Eastern’s forward-line surprise packet from last year’s finals, Jaidyn Stephenson, too. www.taccup.com.au 13 TAC Cup Local Legends Throughout 2016, TAC Cup clubs are celebrating 25 years of the competition alongside the Transport Accident Commission by recognising local legends for invaluable contributions to their clubs.

Rays rise to no.1 The Dandenong Stingrays claimed the 2016 TAC Cup minor premiership following a see- sawing final-term battle with the Geelong Falcons in Round 17. Both teams went into Sunday’s match with records of 13-3 and their places in the top two assured ahead of finals, but with the Stingrays gunning for their first minor premiership since 1997 and the Falcons looking for the fourth in their history, a slog ensued at a wet Simonds Stadium. Just 11 total goals were kicked until three-quarter time, but 10 majors were put on the board when the game opened up in a thrilling final stanza. Dandenong piled on five of the last six goals of the match in a rapid-fire onslaught once Geelong established a 10-point lead with eight minutes to play.
