No. 61 – April 2017 3 Letter from the Chairman Dear Friends Welcome to the annual special edition that includes the yearly accounts and the Trustees’ Annual Report, with its reports on the whole range of our work. Two areas of activity deserve describing in this introduction. The first is the manifold changes that have been brought about in our Society’s world in 2016. The strength of a society must lie in how it deals with change, and I admire the way we have all dealt with it on seemingly every front. To start, this very edition of the News has been produced by two colleagues, Peter James and Richard Smith They aided Ernie Kay when he agreed to ensure the continued printing of the News when the editorship fell vacant and have segued seamlessly into a new co–editorship that pays tribute to them and to Ernie’s guiding hand and wise counsel. Next, we shall all by now have received our copy of the Journal, the first produced by our new Editor, Meinhard Seremba, whom I welcome to the role. Meinhard has been aided by the two previous incumbents, Julian Rushton and Martin Bird, so that his accession to the Editor’s throne has been as painless as it could be. I thank Julian and Martin, and I salute both Meinhard’s willingness to be our first non–British Editor and the ease with which he has, without fuss, delivered the new edition to us. George Smart has, in his own modest and unshowy way, settled into his role of Honorary Secretary, and it is a comfort to me that he has brought a different style, but the same efficiency, to his role as that of his predecessor, Helen Petchey. Helen’s husband, Philip, is already Chairman of London Branch, and has now taken over from Geoff Scargill as Chairman of the Chairmen’s Committee. He has also been co–opted onto Council and I look forward to his contributions to these august meetings. We welcomed Geoff Scargill who entered his second term on the Council and the more recently arrived Peter Newble and Roy Whittaker and missed the presence of Paul Bassett, who stood down during the year under Constitutional rules. 4 Elgar Society News Letter from the Chairman Our second area of activity is the Recording programme. Following a large increase in the budget for 2016, Siva Oke recorded the first of a series of three CDs. This was of choral music comprising Te Deum & Benedictus, Psalm 48 (Great is the Lord), Psalm 29 (Give unto the Lord), O Hearken Thou, Ecce Sacerdos Magnus, Spanish Serenade and From the Bavarian Highlands. The same sessions made a start on the second CD, which will feature for the most part–songs with orchestra but which also feature songs for soprano & piano, including world premiere recordings of In the Dawn and Speak, Music together with As I laye a–thinkynge, Like to the Damask Rose, The Shepherd’s Song, Dry those fair, those crystal eyes, Muleteer’s Serenade and the Mill Wheel Song. You may recall I wrote last year about the reports of the superb performance of Scenes from the Saga of King Olaf in Herford, North Rhine–Westphalia. The soprano soloist was the wondrous Swiss singer Nathalie de Montmollin, and she was engaged by SOMM to record the songs accompanied by Barry Collett. I was lucky enough to hear them perform in Rickmansworth just before the recording, so I cannot wait for those to be released. Finally, as I write this in February, Mike Dutton of Dutton Epoch is preparing to record with the BBC Concert Orchestra under David Lloyd Jones some of the short orchestral works featured in Volume 23 of the Elgar Complete Edition, edited by the conductor. So there is a lot to enjoy on the horizon. I hope you find the Trustees’ Annual Report interesting, and may I thank you all for your continuing support. I look forward to seeing you at the AGM in June, and to the release of those CDs! No. 61 – April 2017 5 Editorial As usual our April edition of the Elgar Society News contains the Trustees’ Annual Report. It was brought to our attention that previously the Branch reports were more or less duplicated in the April News and in the TAR. Thus we have decided to omit the Branch reports from this issue and refer our readers to the TAR. I was most impressed by Peter James’ editorial in the December issue which has drawn some sympathetic comment. I have just returned from a brief visit to the USA and had some chance to listen to the classical music radio stations in and around New England. I was delighted to hear that, unlike Classic FM, the whole of a work was played – not just a movement or a ‘famous bit’. The announcers gave excellent background material on each work with brief details of the composer. My one disappointment was that the range of music played was rather limited, seemingly confined mainly to composers of mid–European origin, Germany, Austria and the Balkans. I confess that my experience was limited but there was little or no Russian, French, British or, perhaps more surprisingly, American music played. It would be interesting to hear if you, our readers, have similar opinions.
