Locaon of Lithuania Lithuania is a small country located on the south‐eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. Its area is more than 65 thousand km2, which means that it is slightly larger than Slovakia and a bit smaller than the Czech Republic. It is almost five times smaller than Poland. Vilnius is the capital city. Lithuania borders four countries – Latvia in the north, Belarus in the east and south, Poland in the south, and the Kaliningrad Oblast, part of the Russian Federation, in the south‐west. The border with Poland is only 104 km long and it is the shortest in Lithuania. The Lithuanian part of the coastline of the Baltic Sea is even shorter – 90 km long. Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are the so‐called Baltic Republics. These small, now independent countries on the Baltic Sea, are former Soviet Republics. The Baltic Republics were the first to separate from the USSR, thus starting the break‐up of the Soviet empire. Lithuania proclaimed its independence already in 1990, facing strong opposition from Moscow which dispatched tanks to Vilnius. Due to the location and association with the Baltic Republics, Lithuania is sometimes considered part of Northern Europe. However, Poland has come to consider all European former Soviet Republics as part of Eastern Europe. Natural condions In terms of terrain, Lithuania is very similar to Belarus – mostly with flat lowlands intersected by small hills. Both countries are located within the great East European Plain. The central part of Lithuania lies within the Middle Lithuanian Lowland. The Lithuanian Lakeland spreads in the east, with the highest landmark of the country - the Aukštaitija Mountain with a height of 294 m asl. Across the state border, the Lithuanian Lakeland neighbours the Belarusian Lakeland. In the west of Lithuania lies the Samogitia Highland which comprises the area of the historical region called Samogitia. The Baltic is bordered by a narrow strip of lowland coast. The Lithuanian coastline is rather plain. Its only variation is the final fragment of the Curonian Spit which separates the Curonian Lagoon from open sea. Its lower section, down to its mouth, is a natural state border with the Russian Federation. Nemen flows into the Curonian Lagoon, where it forms a delta which lies entirely on the Lithuanian side. The largest Nemen tributary in Lithuania is the Viliya River on which the capital of the country is situated. Although Lithuania is a coastal country, its climate is temperate warm transitional. The impact of the marine air masses is often restricted to the coast, as on the other side there is the vast land territory of Eurasia from where continental air masses flow. Thus, two types of air masses clash above Lithuania and it cannot be said that either of them – marine or land – is dominant over the year. Like in Belarus, the potential natural flora in Lithuania is represented by mixed forests. However, Lithuania has more lakeland and glacial areas with sand sediments, where podsolic soils characteristic of coniferous forests were formed. Nowadays, 1/3 of Lithuania’s area is covered by forests, and this is an average level – a bit higher than in Poland, and a bit lower than in Belarus. Uczniowie przygotowują wiadomości w domu. Dzięki temu na lekcji jest możliwa dyskusja na ten temat. Praca całego zespołu klasowego. Uczniowie określają położenie geograficzne Litwy. Wskazują państwa graniczące. Praca w parach. Charakterystyka warunków naturalnych Litwy: ukształtowanie pionowe, sieć rzeczną, naturalna roślinność oraz klimat. Uczniowie w czasie wykonywania zadania korzystają z atlasów geograficznych i podręcznika do nauczania geografii oraz z e‐podręcznika. Wskazane osoby omawiają opracowane zagadnienie. Korzystają z mapy Litwa – mapa hipsometryczna z e‐podręcznika wyświetlonej na tablicy interaktywnej. Praca w parach. Gospodarka Litwy: rolnictwo ( gleby i uprawy), przemysł (surowce mineralne i gałęzie przemysłu). Uczniowie korzystają z atlasów geograficznych, podręcznika do nauczania geografii oraz z zasobów internetu. Praca w grupach. Nauczyciel dzieli klasę na 4 zespoły.     Lithuania’s Economic Development Scenario 2018–2021 18 mThe Economic Development Scenario (hereinafter – the scenario) was developed on the basis of the statistical data published by 1 March 2018 and the information obtained, which, following Government of the Republic of Lithuania Resolution No 369 On the Approval of the Description of the Procedure for Development and Publishing of the Economic Development Scenario of 13 April 2016, was presented by the Ministries of the Republic of Lithuania (of Environment, Energy, Social Security and Labour, Transport and Communications, Economy, Foreign Affairs, Agriculture). Respective assumptions of the external environment (development of trading partners, oil prices, EUR / USD exchange rate) by the European Commission and the International Monetary Fund were also taken into consideration. The year 2017 was extremely successful for Lithuania’s economy, it enhanced national macroeconomic stability and laid the foundations for further economic development in short term. Currently observed synchronic economic recovery of the main Lithuania’s foreign trading partners, based on the forecasts of international experts, should continue for at least another two years, and this will create favourable conditions for increasing demand of exports of goods and services from Lithuania. The endeavour to satisfy the robust external demand and not to lose international competitiveness will further encourage exporters to make decisions reducing production costs and enhancing operational efficiency. Innovations and technological development have also increased the competition between economic operators. Faster growth is also observed in service industries. The global economic downturn affected the Baltic States whose development suffered a sharp decline at the end of 2008 and in 2009. A sudden drop in the demand in export markets, as well as the decline in the demand in the domestic markets due to low purchasing power contributed to the deterioration of the economic situation in the Baltic States, particularly in the manufacturing and construction sectors. Starting from 2011, the economic indicators in the Baltic States have been growing and here the export of goods and services can be mentioned as the main contributor to the development of the economy in the Baltic States. Significant changes in the development of economic sectors started in 2013 due to Russia’s economic problems. During the period 2005 – 2015, most of the value added to the overall structure of the national economy in all three Baltic States was brought by trade and manufacturing. The aim of the research is to analyse the national economy sectors in the Baltic States during the period 2005 – 2015 in order to determine processes that affected the development of economy sectors in each of the countries, or the opposite – the recession, thus finding the most competitive sector of the national economy of the Baltic States.

Email: [email protected] Abstract Because of rapid population ageing Lithuania possesses new economic and social challenges. One of these challenges is the shortage of labour force in the future, which will have a negative impact on the country’s economy. Thus, in this paper the study on impact of one of the significant factors of population ageing - migration - on the economy of Lithuania is conducted. Using a system of variables of net migration, gross domestic product, wage and unemployment rate a structural vector error correction model is developed. The paper also claims that, there is urgent need to implement effective policy means in order to maximize the migration related opportunities and minimize the costs. In addition, while migration can contribute to the growth of Lithuanian economy, it cannot provide by itself a solution to the demographic problems and budgetary implications of an ageing population. The existing institutional and technical structure of the energy sector in Lithuania however does not meet most of these attributes. To convert the system into a new structure needs three essential factors: policy will, time and financial resources. The policy for reforms in the energy sector has been stated by government and parliament since the first days of regained independence. Lithuania is now discussing a new Energy Law, the legal framework for a new energy sector structure. However, it can be learnt from other Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC) that despite the desire for a rapid transition there are considerable time lags involved in restructuring an economic system, especially since both, the infrastructure, and the management have to be changed or improved. It is also clear that large financial resources are required for the modernization of the energy sector and that Lithuania cannot afford this capital all on its own. It needs help from the international donors' and banking system. Lithuania has over the last two years received various grants from the international donor community, among others in the form of technical assistance for the energy sector.
