Where do dreams come from? From out of the fog and the deep waters off a rocky coastline. From the inspiration of four centuries of tradition.

And from working in partnership with artisans who know that if something’s not exactly right, it’s hopelessly wrong.

NEC-12_DisplaySection_B_p14-27.indd 24 3/1/2017 1:25:49 PM Take Time to Learn the Rhyme Predicting the Weather without a Forecast

Red sky at morning, sailors take warning. Red sky at night, sailors delight. These two verses pertain to the amount of moisture in the air. Morning or evening, a lot of moisture in the air may produce a red sky—or a low rainbow—at the antisolar point, which is in the west in the morning or in the east in the evening. If the morning sun reveals a red sky and moisture in the west, then the prevailing westerly wind will bring rain in the course of the day. In the evening, a red sky in the east opposite the setting sun means the wind is taking the rain and moisture away from the ship.

Evening gray, morning red…rain falls on the sailor’s head. Evening red, morning gray…speeds the sailor on his way. This variation of the “red sky rhyme” again refers to the brilliant, red- orange color on the horizon that reveals moisture in the air. As the day warms up after sunrise, more moisture ascends, provoking stiff winds as it rises, and once the air is saturated, the moisture may fall out of its own weight as a torrential rain. By contrast, an evening without the red band suggests the air is gaining no additional heat or moisture, predicting clear weather the next day.

If the sun goes pale to bed, rain tomorrow —so ‘tis said. A pale sun is obscured by high atmospheric moisture, enough of which will fall to a ship’s deck and stir up a breeze as it cools the air.

“Cruising has two pleasures. One is to go out in wider waters from a sheltered place. The other is to go into a sheltered place from wider waters.”

— Author Howard Bloomfi eld

Th e freedom to travel at one’s own pace, yet remain “at home” on board. Savoring ports that are cosmopolitan, those that off er seclusion, and everything in between.

Whatever your reason for yachting, the pastime is as popular as ever. Whether your vessel of choice is 45 feet or 345 feet long, the luxurious traveling homes ply the waters just about everywhere.

Yachting, or boating for recreation, can be traced to the 17th century Dutch. Th ose early wooden jachts were a far cry from to- day’s superyachts, which are outfi tted with anything and everything, from saunas to helicopters. Although the Embassy Cruising Guides are for all boaters, we recognize that larger yachts have particular needs. Time aft er time, our customers in the yachting industry have requested a special section devoted to superyacht-friendly destinations and services. So whether you’re a super- yacht crew member, owner, charterer or skylarking passenger — or you aspire to be — here are some of our favorite superyacht- friendly ports and service providers in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine.

Th e highlighted ports were selected for accessibility, depths, yachting services and accommodations, along with shopping, provisioning and recreational activities, fi ne dining, charm and more. Did we miss one of your favorite yachting hotspots? E-mail us at [email protected] for consideration in our next edition. Also, look for the symbol on individual harbor chapters and in facility tables throughout the book indicating the availability of high-quality services. A complete list of superyacht facilities begins on page 30. (continues on next page) © maKeshiFtDarKroom.com Portland’s deep harbor makes it a favorite stop for superyachts traveling up or down the Maine coast.
