CHAR: I am always down to talk Voyager and Janeway. SUE: Do you want to give a short introduction of yourself? CHAR: Sure I can do that. Well, speaking of Voyager if you know who I am it's probably because I hosted a podcast about Voyager for four years called To The Journey- CREW: To the journey! CHAR: Nice. My co-host Tristan Riddell and I, we did one hundred ninety episodes and four years of that show and when we started feeling like we were broken records we decided to wrap it up and go on to other things but I still love Voyager. I'm still down to talk about it all the time. Lot of love for that show. It's the one that I watched from start to finish from beginning to end as it aired.

  • Beyond the Final Frontier: Star Trek, the Borg and the Post-Colonial
Beyond the Final Frontier: Star Trek, the Borg and the Post-colonial Lynette Russell and Nathan Wolski Over the last three decades, Star Trek has become, to use Bernardi's term, a "mega-text" (1998: 11). Star Trek's mega-text consists of much more than the various studio-produced television series and films - it also includes (among other things) novels, Internet chat groups, conventions and fanzines. That Star Trek's premise of space exploration is a thinly disguised metaphor for colonialism has been extensively analysed (see Bernardi, 1998; Hastie, 1996; Ono 1996; Richards, 1997). Boyd describes the utopian future presented in Star Trek the Next Generation (STNG) as based on "nineteenth-century essentialist definitions of human nature, building ... on faith in perfection, progress, social evolution, and free will" (1996: 96-97). Exploration, colonisation and assimilation are never far from the surface of the STNG text. Less apparent, however, are aspects of the series which challenge the hegemonic view of this narrative and which present a post-colonial critique. In this paper we will explore a range of post-colonial moments and an emerging self reflexivity in the second generation series, focusing on those episodes of Star Trek: the Next Generation (STNG) and Star Trek: Voyager which feature an alien race known as the Borg. Others in space Much has been written about the role of the alien in science fiction as a means of exploring issues of otherness. As Wolmark notes: "Science fiction provides a rich source of metaphors for the depiction of otherness and the 'alien' is one of the most familiar: it enables difference to be constructed in terms of binary oppositions which reinforce relations of domination and subordination" (1994: 2).

Faculty of Arts & Sciences April 01, 2014, 3:30 – 5:00 pm Tidewater A, Sadler Center Dean Kate Conley called the meeting to order at 3:37 p.m. Attendance at the start of the meeting: 32 (no quorum, so we can hear reports but we cannot vote on anything – everyone loves reports, yes?) I. The minutes from March 11, 2014 were not approved (they were not even raised for discussion) the Secretary does not blame you, especially those of you who actually read her minutes. In the meantime, please note the following corrigenda. The mysterious Mikes were Michael Deschenes (Kinesiology) and – Mike Tierney (Government); further, Liz was not Liz Francis (Biology – not sure where that name came from) but rather Liz(abeth) Allison (Biology), who is in fact the chair, as the Secretary may have noticed had there been less haste (festina lente, as they say), and Herr Professor‐at‐the‐Back‐of‐the‐Room was none other than our very own award‐ winning Professor Paul Mapp. The secretary also regrets the slip of John for Tom Linneman (again, too much haste), with sincere thanks to Debbie Bebout (Chemistry) and John Gilmour (Government) – in alphabetical order – for the corrigenda. Perhaps the minutes, as corrected here, can be approved next time, or not. Soon enough it shall fall to someone else. http://www.wm.edu/as/facultyresources/fas/minutes/index.php II. Report of Administrative Officers: Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Kate Slevin on behalf of Provost Michael Halleran reported the following: her report would be mercifully short. • Chapter 1. Kathryn Janeway, Former Captain of the Federation Starship Voyager, Sat on the Bench She Had Just Cleaned of Snow
The end is the beginning by Kadyan Part 1 Chapter 1. Kathryn Janeway, former captain of the Federation Starship Voyager, sat on the bench she had just cleaned of snow. This year was so different from the last one. When they had arrived on Earth just before Christmas, surprising everyone, they had been the endless talk on the news. Interviews of the families, interviews of the crew, how they destroyed the Borg Queen… A year had passed by and nothing had been as she had expected. She had felt so guilty because she had stranded her ship in the Delta quadrant for seven years. During all these years, she had had only one goal: getting home. And now that she was home, her life was meaningless. Kathryn looked at the snow that covered her mother’s garden and all the fields around. Everything was frozen outside and inside her. How can one life so full have become so empty? She didn’t know…didn’t want to know. But now she had reached a point in her life where she had to decide. When has everything gone wrong? She knew when : the day Chakotay had asked her to step back and let Seven go. She had been hurt by the request on that day, a week after they had arrived on Earth, but she had stepped back. When she had received the invitation for their wedding, she had discarded it and didn’t attend. Seven had tried to contact her but she had never acknowledged, read or answered any of her messages.

  • Precise Timings
Episode 2.10 Precise Timings Voyager had never been so quiet, at least not since Neelix had tried to make his own cheese. Most corridors were empty, all stations had been abandoned, even quarters were abandoned. The only damage was contained to one room. "My beloved wall! You'll pay for that out of your rations!" Neelix screeched toward a person shaped dent in the wall by the door. Despite the rowdy noise from 150 plus people stuffed into and around the Mess Hall and the blaring music, everyone heard him. Who he had been yelling at only laughed despite the new ringing in his ears. "Put it on my tab," James said while repressing a smirk. Neelix could only puff his cheeks and watch him leave, this time through the doors. "A tab? What's that?" Neelix mumbled. He walked away through what little space there was amongst the crowd, towards his kitchen, the only empty part of Deck Two. "Computer...?" Nearby a turbolift arrived with only one person on board, and about twenty waiting to get in. Morgan scurried out before she was crushed, her eyes wide. "What the hell...?" she stuttered at the sight of the many people dotted around the corridor, blind stinking drunk and or already passed out. After five minutes of pushing her way through the crowds, Morgan ran into somebody she recognised. Fortunately she seemed normal enough to approach. "Mum?" Kathryn lifted her head up from the sofa, propping herself up uncomfortably on her elbows, leaving her legs sprawled out behind her and over the edge.
