The north end of the castle is marked by a mostly 16th-century tower which, although lacking much of its south side still rises to its full height. Other buildings in the castle are not as well preserved as this. They include the great hall and kitchens, a chapel, gatehouse, smithy, dovecote and other buildings of unidentified purpose. Excavation at the south end of the castle has shown the presence of a defensive structure dating from the first millennium AD. A ditch formerly crossed by a drawbridge protects the landward side of the castle. At the north end of this ditch is a large kiln. The presence of the kiln next to a large, open, gently sloping area suggests that there was a small settlement beyond the walls of the castle. The existence of occupation beyond the ditch was confirmed during the excavations associated with the developments in 2000, when two buildings of 13- 15th century date were uncovered.

    umming, The Name And the Cumming Connections An Ancient Town in Belgium and a Present Day Baronetcy The Town Still Exists: Comines in Belgium Northwest of Lille, France C By Dave Cumming One day while in a writing class at Texas Christian University, my professor said to me “do you know you have an important Scottish name?” Professor Edwards had just returned from a trip to Canada in which she had encountered the Cumming Clan Tartan and Badge. For a young man who was having some difficulty in the class and with a very poor self- image, the words were curiously encouraging. I had often wondered about our name. Where did it come from? There didn’t seem to be a lot of them spelled the way we did. Oh, sure, I knew there was the poet E. E. Cummins and the TV and film actor Bob Cummings. But I didn’t run into many without the “s” on the end. Many years later, on a trip to Europe and the UK to visit my Uncle Herbert’s memorial in Belgium and Uncle Bob’s grave in England, I encountered a small town lying right on the French- Belgium border that once was part of Old Flanders named “Comines”. I didn’t know it then, but later I discovered there was a distinct connection that the name “Cumming” has to the locality of Comines dating back to the 11th Century and the Norman Conquest from which came a knight with William the Conqueror in 1066 named Robert de Comine. The Norman Invasion and the Battle of Hastings was one of those pivotal events in history that shaped the movement of people and is the source for many names in early England and Scotland.

    Clan Macpherson, 1215 to 1650 Reynold Macpherson The Clan Macpherson Museum (see right) is in the village of Newtonmore, near Kingussie, capital of the old district of Badenoch in Scotland. It presents the history of the Clan and houses many precious artifacts. The rebuilt Cluny Castle is nearby (see below), once the home of the chief. Clearly, the district of Badenoch has long been the home of the Macphersons. It was not always so. This chapter will make clear how Clan Macpherson acquired their traditional lands in Badenoch. I will need to explain why Clan Macpherson was both a founding member of the Chattan Confederation and yet regularly disputed Clan McIntosh‟s leadership, and why the Chattan Confederation expanded and gradually disintegrated. The next chapter will explain why the two groups played different roles at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The following chapter will identify the earliest confirmed ancestor in our family who moved to Portsoy on the Banff coast soon after the battle and, over the decades, either prospered or searched for new opportunities. In previous chapters I have shown that Clan Macpherson‟s traditional lands in the Badenoch were first visited from about 11,000 AD by Mesolithic hunter-gatherer-fishers who originated in Iberia. It was then settled from about 7,000 AD by Neolithic farmers. These settlers were heavily influenced culturally during the Bronze Age (c. 2100-750 BC) by the Beaker People and again by Celt immigrants (from about 750 BC) during the Iron Age. The Roman invaders in 68 AD recorded that a Pictish tribe known as the Vacomagi held Badenoch and Moray but failed to subjugate them.

    The Inventory of Historic Battlefields – Battle of Inverlochy I The Inventory of Historic Battlefields is a list of nationally important battlefields in Scotland. A battlefield is of national importance if it makes a contribution to the understanding of the archaeology and history of the nation as a whole, or has the potential to do so, or holds a particularly significant place in the national consciousness. For a battlefield to be included in the Inventory, it must be considered to be of national importance either for its association with key historical events or figures; or for the physical remains and/or archaeological potential it contains; or for its landscape context. In addition, it must be possible to define the site on a modern map with a reasonable degree of accuracy. The aim of the Inventory is to raise awareness of the significance of these nationally important battlefield sites and to assist in their protection and management for the future. Inventory battlefields are a material consideration in the planning process. The Inventory is also a major resource for enhancing the understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of historic battlefields, for promoting education and stimulating further research, and for developing their potential as attractions for visitors.
