In his formal plan for the institution, Joseph Henry outlined a program that included the following statement: "It is proposed to publish a series of reports, giving an account of the new discoveries in science, and of the changes made from year to year in all branches of knowledge." Porto, Porto, Portugal Received March 12, 2012 Accepted October 29, 2012 Abstract The objective of the present study was to evaluate the parasite fauna of four species of ornamental fish collected in the Chumucuí River, municipality of Bragança, Pará, Brazil. From June 2006 to December 2007. Fishes (n=307) belonging to four species were collected, including 23 specimens of Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae (redeye tetra), 37 Carnegiella strigata (marbled hatchetfish), 7 Chilodus punctatus (spotted headstander), and 240 Astyanax bimaculatus (twospot astyanax). The parasites found belonged to three taxa: monogeneans in the gills, nematodes (larvae of Capillaria sp. and Contracaecum sp.) in the digestive tract and liver and acanthocephalans (Quadrigyrus torquatus, Q. brasiliensis and Q. nickoli) in the stomach and intestine. Astyanax bimaculatus presented higher prevalence of acanthocephalans in the wet season, and lower prevalence of nematodes in the dry season. -

The composition, phylogeny, and classification of Characidae is currently uncertain, despite significant efforts based on analysis of morphological and molecular data. No consensus about the monophyly of this group or its position within the order Characiformes has been reached, challenged by the fact that many key studies to date have non-overlapping taxonomic representation and focus only on subsets of this diversity. Results: In the present study we propose a new definition of the family Characidae and a hypothesis of relationships for the Characiformes based on phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences of two mitochondrial and three nuclear genes (4,680 base pairs). The sequences were obtained from 211 samples representing 166 genera distributed among all 18 recognized families in the order Characiformes, all 14 recognized subfamilies in the Characidae, plus 56 of the genera so far considered incertae sedis in the Characidae. The phylogeny obtained is robust, with most lineages significantly supported by posterior probabilities in Bayesian analysis, and high bootstrap values from maximum likelihood and parsimony analyses. -

C. de Pinna* and Kirk O. Winemiller** A new miniaturized species of the trichomycterid genus Ammoglanisis described from the Rio Orinoco basin in Venezuela. It is distinguished from its only congener, A. diaphanus,by: a banded color pattern formed by internal chromatophores; 5 or 6 pectoral-fin rays (7 in A. diaphanus),5/5 principal caudal-fin rays (6/6 in A. diaphanus),ii+6 dorsal-fin rays (iii+6+i in A. diaphanus),30 or 31 vertebrae (33 in A. diaphanus),six or seven branchiostegal rays (five in A. diaphanus),subterminal mouth (inferior in A. diaphanus)and by the lack of premaxillary and dentary teeth. The two speciesalso differ markedly in a number of internal anatomical traits. Synapomorphies are offered to support the monophyly of the two species now included in Ammoglanis,as well as autapomorphies for each of them. Ammoglanispulex is among the smallest known vertebrates, the largest known specimen being 14.9 mm SL. It is a fossorial inhabitant of shallow sandy sections of clear- and light blackwater streams, and probably feeds on interstitial microinvertebrates. 375 Poster Session I, Event Center – The Snowbird Center, Friday 26 July 2019 Maria Sabando1, Yannis Papastamatiou1, Guillaume Rieucau2, Darcy Bradley3, Jennifer Caselle3 1Florida International University, Miami, FL, USA, 2Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium, Chauvin, LA, USA, 3University of California, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA, USA Reef Shark Behavioral Interactions are Habitat Specific Dominance hierarchies and competitive behaviors have been studied in several species of animals that includes mammals, birds, amphibians, and fish. Competition and distribution model predictions vary based on dominance hierarchies, but most assume differences in dominance are constant across habitats. More recent evidence suggests dominance and competitive advantages may vary based on habitat. We quantified dominance interactions between two species of sharks Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos and Carcharhinus melanopterus, across two different habitats, fore reef and back reef, at a remote Pacific atoll. We used Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) to observe dominance behaviors and quantified the number of aggressive interactions or bites to the BRUVs from either species, both separately and in the presence of one another. Blacktip reef sharks were the most abundant species in either habitat, and there was significant negative correlation between their relative abundance, bites on BRUVs, and the number of grey reef sharks. Although this trend was found in both habitats, the decline in blacktip abundance with grey reef shark presence was far more pronounced in fore reef habitats. We show that the presence of one shark species may limit the feeding opportunities of another, but the extent of this relationship is habitat specific. Future competition models should consider habitat-specific dominance or competitive interactions. -

The sampling was conducted from 2012 to 2013 during the dry season. Fish were collected with dip nets and seine nets in 22 streams of 1st to 3rd order. Sampling resulted in 3035 specimens belong- ing to 117 species, 27 families and six orders. The most abundant species were Bryconops aff. melanurus, Hemigrammus belottii, and Hemigrammus analis. Four undescribed species were recognized, one of which is known only from the area of this study. -

Mônica Toledo Piza Ragazzo São Paulo Outubro/ 2019 Resumo A dentição é um complexo de caracteres reconhecido por ser altamente informativo em estudos sistemáticos para a ordem Characiformes, como consequência a dentição foi amplamente explorada em estudos sistemáticos das linhagens que compõem a ordem. No entanto, estudos sistemáticos detalhados que discutam a variação observada na dentição em um contexto da ordem como um todo são escassos. De maneira semelhante, apesar do amplo conhecimento existente sobre o esqueleto dos representantes adultos dos Characiformes, informações detalhadas sobre o desenvolvimento deste complexo anatômico assim como sobre a sequência de ossificação completa para representantes de Characiformes ainda são incipientes e, até hoje, existe apenas uma sequência completa de ossificação disponível na literatura. Apresentamos aqui um estudo detalhado sobre a dentição dos Characiformes contemplando a morfologia dentária, o modo de implantação e a posição da implantação, disposição dos dentes em cada osso, modo de formação dos dentes de substituição e padrão cronológico da substituição. Descrições detalhadas são fornecidas para 78 espécies de Characiformes. -
