Communiquant à Chérif Pacha (1826-1887) les demandes concernant la lutte contre l'esclavage de Lord Russel (1792-1878) à l'Empire Ottoman, le diplomate anglais Bulwer précise les positions du gouvernement anglais "... que la Porte prenne de suite des mesures sérieuses pour supprimer l'exportation des esclaves des Ports de Massawak et Sawakin... que les Ports susmentionnés soient de nouveau soumis à sa jurisdiction... je suis chargé par Lord Russel de vous demander sous quel pavillon les dites barques naviguent..."etc. Au congrès de Vienne de 1815, la France obligea les belligérants à signer la Déclaration sur la Traite des Nègres. L'état britannique fut ainsi le champion de la lutte contre l'esclavage. Le consul d'Angleterre au Soudan, John Pethrick (1813- 1882), impliqué selon ce document dans la traite des noirs, fut renvoyé en Angleterre. Importante lettre historique concernant l'abolition de l'esclavage. Autograph letter signed, 3 pages, 8vo; Alexandria, 14 March 1865. Good condition. Bulwer get the question of Lord Russel, concerning the struggle agains slavery, across to Sherif Pascha and informs him on the British's government position about the subject. It is expected from the Ottoman Empire, a. o., to take serious mesures to stop the slave trade, to inquire under which flags are the ships involved in the trade and so on. It is also matter of the involvment of John Pethrick, British consul in Sudan, which was actually recalled in England for this reason. -
