Editorial: Their Americans: Why Do We Love 'Em
ISSN 1554-3897 AFRICAN JOURNAL OF CRIMINOLOGY & JUSTICE STUDIES: AJCJS; Volume 2, No. 2, November 2006 EDITORIAL: THEIR AMERICANS: WHY DO WE LOVE ‘EM SO?i By Biko Agozino, Ph.D. Professor of Sociology and Acting Head Department of Behavioural Sciences The University of the West Indies St. Augustine Trinidad and Tobago America! We Love You! But why? Africans came before Columbus to fraternize with Native Americans (Sertima, 1976). But since 1492 we have been terrorized along with the natives. Transportation, Auction, Plantation, Revolution, Emancipation, Liberation, and still we love you, America! Did you put voodoo on us or are your adorable Hollywood monsters so irresistible? I went to a conference on ‘Their America’ with a determination to address the second half of the organizers’ charge, the half that was not about why America is hated but without spelling it out in terms of love for America; that half of the coin of hatred appears to be the side of love too shy to be named but no less passionate than the side of hate. Their America is also ours to dream, to love, to seek, to save! Why do we love this God’s own country of theirs? Is it because our African ancestors before us slaved for this country, as Bob Marley queried? We built the cabin and we planted the corn. Yet Editorial: Their Americans: Why Do We Love Em So? Biko Agozino they look at us with a scorn while they eat up all our corn. Bob Marley went on to chant that we have to chase the crazy baldheads out of town because they return hatred for our love, telling us about the God above; but mostly we respond with unrequited love and yet the dominant message of Bob and all Rasta is the message of love. -

broadwayworld.com http://www.broadwayworld.com/article/New-BeBe-Winans-Musical-BORN-FOR-THIS-Kathleen-Turner-and-More-Among-Arena-Stages- 2016-17-Lineup-20160215 New BeBe Winans Musical 'BORN FOR THIS', Kathleen Turner and More Among Arena Stage's 2016-17 Lineup by BWW News Desk Arena Stage just announced an exciting, starry 2016/17 season, which will showcase the theater's mission of American voices and artists. Spurred by its role as one of the seven originating theaters of D.C.'s Women's Voices Theater Festival, Arena Stage has embraced a commitment to inclusion with a season featuring seven titles by women, six playwrights of color and five female directors. On assembling the lineup Smith shares, "Arena has such a smart and diverse audience, so it is always a challenge to ensure everyone is energized. This season we leaned into that challenge and are welcoming a host of extremely talented artists both returning and new. This season is a celebration of Arena's broad shoulders, from our Lillian Hellman Festival, a Lorraine Hansberry classic and the gold-standard musical to world-premiere political dramas, a comedy and a new musical. The Mead Center was designed to have these different audiences unite in our flowing lobby, and I'm eager to experience this throughout our dynamic season." The season kicks off in July with the original world-premiere musical Born for This: The BeBe Winans Story by six- time Grammy Award winner BeBe Winans and veteran Arena Stage playwright/director Charles Randolph-Wright. Featuring new music by BeBe, the musical chronicles the early days of his career with sister CeCe and will star their niece and nephew, siblings Deborah Joy Winans and Juan Winans. -

The Scatterling Rebecca Alderson
The Scatterling Rebecca Alderson The Scatterlings is a body of work that depicts my family. It seeks to share my family’s story, by making a connection between the artwork and the viewer to encourage them to wonder and question my family’s story. The theme was developed through the love of my family and our cultural roots. My family and I were born in Durban, South Africa; we are immigrants and strangers in this country. ‘And we are scatterlings of Africa, On a journey to the stars, Far below we leave forever, Dreams of what we were’ These are the lyrics from a 1982 song, The Scatterlings Of Africa by Johnny Clegg and Juluka. These lyrics represent my family’s journey to Australia leaving behind our family and safety. As the artist the foundation was making my artwork convey my happy family through bright colours and careless brushstroke techniques while making it interchangeable between any race, age or religion and to showcase my family’s story and journey. I began researching various art styles and painting techniques that would convey the right story. I settled on doing an abstract style of painting. The works of Ben Quilty and Andrew Salgado both used broad brushstroke techniques with bold colours. These artists inspired me with my own work so much I practiced and incorporated their styles to develop my own style. The reason for choosing this style is because of the rough yet playful look with lots of texture. Doing abstract techniques meant that I could use vibrant and vivid colours, while light direction and intense brushstrokes assisted in conveying a playful attitude and composition. -
Sparrow Records Discography
Sparrow Discography by Mike Callahan, David Edwards & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan Sparrow Records Discography Sparrow is a Contemporary Christian label founded in 1976 by Billy Ray Hearn. Hearn was the A&R Director for Word Records’ Myrrh label, founded a few years earlier also as a Contemporary Christian label. Sparrow also released records under their Birdwing subsidiary. Hearn’s Sparrow label was in competition with Hearn’s old boss, Word Records, and was quite successful. Even today, Sparrow is among the top Christian labels. Hearn sold the label to EMI in 1992, and it was placed under the Capitol Christian Music Group. Sparrow signed a distribution agreement with MCA in April, 1981 to release their product in the secular market while the regular Sparrow issues were distributed to Christian stores and Christian radio stations. The arrangement with MCA lasted until October, 1986, when Sparrow switched distribution to Capitol. Sunday, April 3 @ 7 PM Zellerbach Theatre Part of the African Roots, American Voices series. 15/16 Season 45 ABOUT THE ARTISTS Johnny Clegg is one of South Africa’s most celebrated sons. He is a singer, songwriter, dancer, anthropologist and musical activist whose infectious crossover music, a vibrant blend of Western pop and African Zulu rhythms, has exploded onto the international scene and broken through all the barriers in his own country. In France, where he enjoys a massive following, he is fondly called Le Zulu Blanc – the white Zulu. Over three decades, Clegg has sold over five million albums of his brand of crossover music worldwide. He has wowed vast audiences with his audacious live shows and won a number of national and international awards for his music and his outspoken views on apartheid, perspectives on migrant workers in South Africa and the general situation in the world today. Clegg’s history is as bold, colorful and dashing as the rainbow country which he has called home for more than 40 years. Clegg was born in Bacup, near Rochdale, England, in 1953, but was brought up in Zimbabwe and South Africa. Between his mother (a cabaret and jazz singer) and his step-father (a crime reporter who took him into the townships at an early age), Clegg was exposed to a broader cultural perspective than that available to his peers. -
