France & Pakistan SOUTHASIA • SEPTEMBER 2016 5 COMMENT Pakistan’s New Direction SEPTEMBER 2016 VOL.20 ISSUE 09 n the backdrop of the intensely growing relationship between Pakistan PRESIDENT & EDITOR IN CHIEF and China, there has been a major development in U.S.-India security Syed Jawaid Iqbal Irelations, resulting in the signing of the long-anticipated Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (LEMOA). The Agreement facilitates the provision of MANAGING EDITOR logistical support, supplies and services between the U.S. and Indian militaries Zeba Jawaid on a reimbursable basis and incorporates a framework to govern the arrangement. EDITOR LEMOA would help both countries in monitoring the use of each others’ land, Javed Ansari air and naval bases for repair and resupply and would be a step forward in ASSISTANT EDITORS building mutual defence ties as both countries seek to counter the growing Mahrukh Farooq maritime assertiveness of China. It is interesting to note that a week before the Samina Wahid – Faizan Usmani signing of the LEMOA, Forbes magazine had warned China and Pakistan that Feature Writer: Khawaja Amer India and the U.S. were about to sign a major pact. The fact that the magazine described the US-India agreement as ‘a major pact’ was pregnant with meaning. CONTRIBUTING EDITOR Commenting on the agreement, US media noted that it was a key component S. G. Jilanee of the Obama Administration’s policy to contain China, which would further spread its influence across Asia by deploying 60 per cent of its surface ships in CONTRIBUTORS the Indo-Pacific region in the near future. The media reports also pointed out Saira Owais Adil - Dr. Moonis Ahmar that unlike Afghanistan and Iraq, where the US had to build everything from M.M. The massive expansion of US-India military ties will definitely impact both Pakistan and China and may draw actions on their part which could MARKETING & ADVERTISING further escalate the military balance in the region. At the same time, there is no Aqam-ud-Din Khan denying the fact that Pakistan has dismally failed to put in order its foreign office SPECIAL PROJECTS so that it can more effectively tackle such developments as LEMOA and many Waqas Jan - Syed Ovais Akhtar other similar situations. In fact, the question of India’s entry into the NSG will Hira Sarwar again raise its ugly head very soon, as the U.S. will now feel more confident in making another attempt of supporting India. The pity is that the democratic COORDINATOR government in Pakistan is still without a full-time foreign minister which has Shehryar Zulfiqar impacted the country’s outlook in many sticky situations pertaining to foreign CIRCULATION relations. Danish Shahid The newly developing ties between the U.S. and India are seen as a foreign policy success of the Obama administration. It is now becoming clear that EDITORIAL & BUSINESS OFFICE America regards India as an important counter-balance to China. • The Saffronization of Indian Textbooks
The Saffronization of Indian Textbooks A Study of the Extent and Implications of BJP Textbook Manipulation 2002 - 2018 Caitlin Westerfield RLST 375: Hindu Nationalism May 8, 2019 Westerfield 1 1 Introduction The emergence of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in response to a growing Hindu Nationalist sen- timent in India has led to nation-wide policy changes as well as radical and violent conduct by its followers. This is in part due to the extraordinary effectiveness by which the BJP has been spread- ing its ideology of Hindu exceptionalism, Islamophobia, and Indian nationalism. One technique that the BJP has put to efficient use since beginning to gain power in an attempt to indoctrinate Indian youth into the Hindutva tradition has been the rewriting of government-issued textbooks. While “Government efforts to influence history-writing, and intellectual life in general, ... is [a] common practice, ... what does distinguish the BJP is the systematic, consistent, and generalised level at which it has been operating” (Sarkar 2002, 245). This exceptional prioritization of text- books is used in part by the BJP to prompt the next generation to support the Hindutva move- ment, but is also focused on retrogressing their social justice mentality. By pushing for regressive mindsets on caste, gender, and religious acceptance, as well as encouraging an anti-Marxist and pro-authoritarian dogma, the BJP textbooks are graduating students who not only will not work to bring India into a more egalitarian society, but will be active agents in bringing about the reverse. 2 Case Studies: Textbooks in India from 1990s to Present The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has gone through several iterations of textbooks as the federal government in India changed party control.
