They are important because they would give some indication about the mood of the electorate for the general election in 2019. These are big battles that are being fought with an eye on the war next year. There is anti-incumbency in the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled states, especially in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, where the saffron party has been in Ipower for 15 years. Governance in the states under the BJP cannot be called the paragon of excellence, thus providing the Congress a good opportunity to oust it from these states. NANDAN JHA Will it? Our cover story focuses on this issue at length and from various perspectives. It facebook.com/jhnandan not only describes and examines the two national parties’ strengths and weaknesses, their strategies, and their prospects but also surveys the history of the grand old party. @Nandan_jha4 Other stories also go beyond what is being reported routinely by the mainstream media. Effort has been made to put important events like Amritsar tragedy on Dusshera, data theft at the Paytm chief’s office, Sabarimala, the nun rape case, and journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s murder in perspective. We hope you’ll like the package. Editor’s Note ou might noticed our new tagline—‘India’s first conservative magazine.’ Conservative? Many eyebrows would be raised. In a country where Left- liberals still set the agenda, being a conservative can bring ridicule; publishing a conservative magazine can be disastrous. But we insist, because we are conservative. YWe first define what being conservative is not. Left-liberals would like to convince everybody that as a political philosophy, conservatism is everything despicable—illiberal, orthodox, unchanging, unprogressive, fogy, unimaginative, etc. Typically, a conservative in the Indian context would be regarded as somebody who does not allow his wife to come out of the purdah, doesn’t send his daughter to school, believes in the caste system, is not comfortable with modern ways of life, and is generally a nasty person. Nothing could be farther from the truth. RAVI SHANKER KAPOOR Encyclopedia Britannica has simply but beautifully described conservatism as a “political doctrine that emphasizes the value of traditional institutions and practices.” Conservatism, facebook.com/ravishanker.kapoor which was the earliest Rightwing ideology, “has traditionally rested on an organic conception of society—that is, on the belief that society is not merely a loose collection of individuals but @libertypartisan a living organism comprising closely connected, interdependent members. Conservatives thus favor institutions and practices that have evolved gradually and are manifestations of continuity and stability. Government’s responsibility is to be the servant, not the master, of existing ways of life, and politicians must therefore resist the temptation to transform society and politics.” In the Indian milieu, conservatism must include three strands: tradition, open society, free economy, and limited government. It may be argued that conservatism is a quintessentially Western phenomenon. While it is true that conservatism first took a concrete shape in the works of thinkers like Adam Smith, David Hume, and Edmund Burke—and has grown as a leading political philosophy primarily in the Anglo-Saxon world—our contention is that conservatism is possible in India. Of course, Indian conservatism has to be homegrown, arising from and in tune with the conventions and traditions of the country. It is possible because India is an ancient civilization; it can boast of a society that is sufficiently vibrant and resilient, readily absorbing Western values without losing its cultural moorings, as evident from the experience of the last two centuries. Hence India’s first conservative magazine. THE CATHOLIC BISHOPS’ CONFERENCE OF INDIA Vol. XXVII India January- December 2018 GUEST EDITORIAL never did anything worth doing by accident, nor did any of my inventions come by accident; they came by work”. These words “I of the great Greek Philosopher Plato in brief summarises this first edition of the refurbished “Catholic India” information magazine of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference as the apex body of the Catholic Church in India through its Office Bearers and its various offices continuously conducts programmes and activities in favour of society and for the animation of the Church in India. Many of these activities which our Bishops, Fathers and Sisters do, not by accident, but through hard work and much effort are regularly reported on ourwebsite https://www.cbci.in . Over the last 15 months, the website has been visited by over three million surfers. The newsletter Catholic India which now comes out both as an electronic edition as well as a printed one provides just the gist of a few of the activities/happenings/events with a link to the detailed report on the website. This is a novel experiment to make the website news easily accessible to our friends, benefactors and well-wishers interested in our activities. We take this opportunity to thank all those who have made it possible to bring forth this publication. In particular my sincere thanks to Fr. Anthony Fernandes SFX who has compiled and set up the news magazine and to the Manager of Federal Bank, Connaught Place branch, New Delhi, for sponsoring the costs of its publication.

  • Lessons from the Movie Whale Rider
A Fidelity that Rebels: Lessons from the Movie Whale Rider Local churches in several countries are courting their own problems. There are clamours for reforms from within and without. Specifically referring to some of the latest scandals within the Church in India, the author discusses the thorny issue of obedience, especially religious obedience. Using the New Zealand movie Whale Rider as an interpretive lens and drawing lessons from it, the author argues, in this article, that a fidelity that seeks to rebel must fight the system from within, with faithfulness to the original source, with an empathic love that alone can link obedience and prophetism. He argues that "Love, love alone justifies an obedience that rebels at the service of prophesy. Love, love alone ensures that it does so not to hurt, but to heal; not to exclude, but to embrace; not to shame, but to redeem; not to kill, but to give life." There are no two opinions that the Catholic Church is going through some very hard times. The sexual abuse scandal that exploded nearly two decades ago does not seem to end—newer cases are cropping up everywhere, including in some very strong citadels of the Church. Pope Francis is coping criticism from within and without for what some consider to be his too progressive stance on some moral issues. There have been financial scandals and crises of disobedience in Vatican as well as elsewhere. The Church in India has been going through its share of problems and challenges as well. The Syro-Malabar Church, together with its patriarch, has been mired for some time in scams related to land sale.
