Finally, let me touch on the social side of Syracuse. After attending a private, all-boys Catholic high school in Buffalo, I was looking forward to the diversity of social activities available at SU. The school didn’t let me down. There were quite a wide variety of social activities available at Syracuse, from the very strong sports atmosphere and traditions, to the range of clubs and organizations, to the nightlife — and I chose to take advantage of many of these opportunities. Who can complain when they get to watch their school’s basketball team play for a national championship against Indiana as a freshman, with a future NBA No. 1 draft choice on the team? I can still vividly remember the celebration by 10,000 students and fans on Marshall Street when the team won the NCAA semifinal. When it comes down to it, Syracuse is a lot of fun. On the whole, SU provides its graduates a broad base of knowledge and strong interpersonal skills. I found myself well prepared for a career in finance and operations, as well as for a rigorous program at graduate school. The University offers virtually unlimited opportunities, and is a great place to spend four years. The learning is not just in the classroom; it is also on field trips, on the water in practice, in study groups, and in the workout room. Overall, I feel that Syracuse prepared me well for my future academically, athletically, and socially, and provided me with a lifelong network of friends.

Looking back, it is clear that coaches Lazlo and Sanford did an excellent job developing the boys that we were into young men with strong character and the ability to win or lose with grace. After spending time with Coach Dave Reischman and observing his student-athletes, I am confident that he will be equally successful at developing young athletes into quality men and women. Academically, Syracuse offers students unlimited opportunities. Everyone knows about some of the premier schools at SU, like Newhouse and Maxwell. Not everyone is aware of the high quality of the teaching across the board, and the supportive atmosphere fostered among the students. As a student at SU, you really do have the world at your fingertips. Completed and dedicated in 1937, the James A. Ten Eyck Boathouse is a memorial to the beloved rowing pioneer who coached Syracuse University oarsmen from 1903 until his death in 1938.

Hubert “Jock” Stratton Crew Room James A. Ten Eyck Boathouse Named for SU rowing alumnus Hubert “Jock” Stratton ‘26, the crew room To generations of oarsmen — and since 1972, oarswomen — the Ten Eyck provides an indoor training facility for the SU crews during the winter months. Boathouse, located at Onondaga Lake Outlet in Longbranch Park, has been the Located in Archbold Gymnasium on main campus, the room contains an eight- headquarters of Syracuse rowing. In 1987, a major renovation of the historical seat , ergometers and an area for calisthenics. facility both modernized and enlarged the original structure. Funding for the project was shared by the Syracuse University Athletics Department, Onondaga County and the Syracuse Alumni Rowing Association (SARA). The boathouse was formally re-dedicated at ceremonies on April 30, 1988. The renovations included: modernizing the existing shell storage bays on the first floor of the boathouse and adding a new small boat bay; redesigning space for coaches offices; constructing an observation deck and an indoor lounge on the second floor overlooking the river course finish line; and renovating the women’s shower, locker rooms, dormitory, and adjoining men’s locker and shower rooms. These new locker rooms provide ample space for rowers during pre-IRA training camp. The dormitory doubles as a large meeting room. In 1997, a new four-bay boathouse was constructed to house the growing number of rowing shells. The construction makes the boathouse not only an enduring memorial to Ten Eyck, but one of the finest college rowing facilities in the country.

Onondaga Lake The home water of the Syracuse crews is Onondaga Lake. Courses, which are designed in the four and one-half mile by one and one-quarter mile body of water, are used for high school, collegiate, national and international competition. Onondaga Lake hosted the annual Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta from 1952-94 and the USRowing Club Championships from 1995-2000. The lake has been the training water for crews competing in the Empire State Games, National Sports Festival, Pan Am Games Trials, Junior National Championships and the Olympics. In addition to the lake’s state-of-the-art 2,000-meter, six-lane course, the connecting Seneca River and New York State Barge Canal system provides more than 25 miles of sheltered water for workouts.

“If you want to know how important academics are The Stevenson Educational Center to the Syracuse Athletics Department you just have to take a look at our Academic Services wing in Manley Field House. We have great academic counselors, a great computer lab, and great tutors. The resources for academic success are here and it is up to the student-athletes to take advantage of them.” - SU head coach Dave Reischman

To support the athletic and academic goals of the student- athletes, the Syracuse Athletics Department has a comprehensive academic services unit, the Office of Student Support Services. The unit is staffed by a director, four full-time advisors, a secretary, seven graduate assistants and a complete tutoring staff devoted specially to individual academic and personal development. The department was selected as a pilot school for the NCAA CHAMPS/LIFE Skills Program. This program at Syracuse is known as the Stevenson Educational Center LIFE Skills (formerly known as ACES). The role of SEC is to provide experiences and opportunities that will help the student-athletes realize their full potential. The key components of SU LIFE Skills Program are Academic Commitment, Personal Development Commitment, Service Commitment and Career Development Commitment. The program, designed to enhance leadership and citizenship skills, offers opportunities to develop understanding of choice, integrity, accountability and commitment. The program was created to adapt to the ever-changing needs of the student-athlete during his/her collegiate career and encourages meaningful contributions to the community. The facilities at Syracuse University have undergone as many changes as the focus and scope of the program. The Milton and Ann Stevenson Educational wing has expanded during the last four years, allowing for increased attention and support of the needs of the student-athlete. Computer clusters, group meeting rooms, office space and private tutorial rooms are in place to further enhance the support provided by the department. All of the expansions and space are convenient to the living, academic and athletic facilities enjoyed by the Syracuse student-athlete.

SARA One key to the success of the SU crew program is the Syracuse Alumni Rowing Association. Organized in 1955 by Dr. Bruce Chamberlain ‘41 and Dr. Thomas Kerr ‘39, SARA’s purpose, as defined in its charter, is “to support the interest in rowing at Syracuse University, the city of Syracuse and Onondaga County.” Support from enthusiastic and loyal SARA members has come in many different ways: gifts of racing shells and equipment; funding for training trips; special awards; designated campaigns such as the Ten Eyck Boathouse Renovation; and countless other contributions to maintain the traditionally high standards of Syracuse University crew. In addition, SARA involves itself in annual events such as the fall Alumni Race and Get-Together; the winter Navy Ball, a dinner-dance for rowers and their guests; and the spring Appreciation Luncheon just prior to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships. The bright orange SARA tent is seen anywhere SU competes as alumni gather to cheer on the crews and socialize. The association publishes a newsletter to keep SARA members in touch with one another and the program. Joe Peter ‘69 (far right, bottom row) was the coxswain on the Syracuse University alumni team that won the gold medal in Campaign for Crew the Alumni Race at the 2002 IRA Regatta. The tradition of Syracuse rowing is outstanding and gives great pride to all those who participate. In an effort to continue this strong tradition, the Campaign for Crew has been established to endow scholarship funds for the men’s crew program. It is essential to build the endowment base to ensure the future of the program. At the start of the campaign, there was $1.2 million in crew endowment funds. This provides the program with about $60,000 to use toward athletic scholarships. With 50 student-athletes participating in crew, the situation is quite clear. In order to recruit and retain talented student-athletes, it is important to increase the scholarship funds. The goal of this campaign is $2 million. This will provide approximately $100,000 worth of additional scholarships annually. This will go a long way in attracting the best student-athletes to our program. One person whose name is synonymous with Syracuse Crew is Joe Peter ‘69. Since his days as coxswain for the Orangemen, Peter has kept his relationship with SU crew strong. He has established the Joseph E. Peter Endowed Crew Scholarship. Syracuse dedicated a new in honor of Dr. Bruce E. In addition, he has supported the Boathouse Renovation Project and the Henley Baker ‘59 and his wife, Patricia Gormel Baker ’59, on April 24, Endowment Fund. He is currently the Chairman of The Campaign for Crew. 2004. Baker helped the 1956 freshmen crew to the IRA Regatta “Participating in SU crew changed my life. Since the day I graduated, I have dedicated myself to supporting the program in anyway I can,” Peter said. “I want to Championship, and was a member of the second varsity eight know that Syracuse University always has a varsity men’s crew team. I have made it in 1959. In 1985, Bruce was honored as a Syracuse University a mission to help make that happen.” Letter Winner of Distinction, an award voted on by his peers in Crew alum, Jim Breuer ’72 and his wife, Cathy ‘73, have made a significant lead SU’s Varsity Club. Bruce is currently a member of the Syracuse gift to the Campaign for Crew. Their contribution of $100,000 will establish the Breuer Family Endowed Crew Scholarship. Jim and Cathy challenge fellow crew Alumni Rowing Association (SARA). Both Bruce and Patricia, alumni to join them and participate in this endeavor at the highest level possible. who was also involved in athletics at Syracuse, are members of “The crew program gave me so much toward my life’s success,” Breuer said. “It the Central New York Alumni Club. feels great to be able to give something back. Establishing my own scholarship is a great honor and I am proud to know that it will help future crew athletes.”

“Alumni are absolutely essential to the success of a rowing program for a lot of reasons. What we try to establish in our student-athletes while they’re here is to have a sense of legacy that by the time they graduate after four years the program is better for them having walked through the door. That legacy doesn’t stop when they graduate. They have a responsibility when they leave to ensure the student-athletes who come after them have access to the same opportunities they did.” - SU head coach Dave Reischman
