Worldwide, the population size of Siberian musk deer is threatened by severe illegal poaching for commercially valuable musk and meat, habitat losses, and forest fire. At present, this species is categorized as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. However, the genetic information of Siberian musk deer is largely unexplored. Results: Here, we produced 3.10 Gb draft assembly of wild Siberian musk deer with a contig N50 of 29,145 bp and a scaffold N50 of 7,955,248 bp. We annotated 19,363 protein-coding genes and estimated 44.44% of the genome to be repetitive. Our phylogenetic analysis reveals that wild Siberian musk deer is closer to Bovidae than to Cervidae. Comparative analyses showed that the genetic features of Siberian musk deer adapted in cold and high-altitude environments. We sequenced two additional genomes of Siberian musk deer constructed demographic history indicated that changes in effective population size corresponded with recent glacial epochs. Finally, we identified several candidate genes that may play a role in the musk secretion based on transcriptome analysis. Conclusions: Here, we present a high-quality draft genome of wild Siberian musk deer, which will provide a valuable genetic resource for further investigations of this economically important musk deer. -

The study was conducted at Xinglongshan Musk Deer Farm (XMDF) of Xinglongshan National Nature Reserve in Gansu Province of western China. The integrated method of focal sampling and all occurrence recording was utilized to quantify the behavioural patterns of 45 captive alpine musk deer (Moschus sifanicus) during non-mating season (from August 1st to October 25th ), and the behavioural durations of 12 behavioural patterns such as standing-gazing were recorded. The behavioural modes were compared to explore the potential differences between females and males, and the monthly behavioural modes for males and females were analyzed. Our results showed that the captive female deer in XMDF could compensate the energy lost in pregnancy, parturition and lactation through improving its ingestive efficiency. In order to be more sensitive to the changing environment, females expressed more standing-gazing (SG: 67.38±12.69 s) and moving (MO; 27.41±5.02 s), but less bedding (BE: 42.32±11.35 s) than male deer (SG: 56.43±9.19 s; MO: 19.23±4.64 s; BE: 96.14±15.71 s). -

ABSTRACT Background. The Père David's deer (Elaphurus davidianus) population was established from only a small number of individuals. Their genetic diversity is therefore relatively low and transmissible (parasitic) diseases affecting them merit further attention. Parasitic infections can affect the health, survival, and population development of the host. However, few reports have been published on the gastrointestinal parasites of Père David's deer. The aims of this study were: (1) to identify the intestinal parasites groups in Père David's deer; (2) to determine their prevalence and burden and clarify the effects of different seasons and regions on various indicators of Père David's deer intestinal parasites; (3) to evaluate the effects of the Père David's deer reproductive period on these parasites; (4) to reveal the regularity of the parasites in space and time. Methods. In total, 1,345 Père David's deer faecal samples from four regions during four seasons were tested using the flotation (saturated sodium nitrate solution) to identify parasites of different genus or group, and the McMaster technique to count the number of eggs or oocysts. -

Green' and Bijaya Kattel ABSTRACT The musk deer, genus Moschus, is distributed sporadically throughout the forested, mountainous parts of Asia, from just north of the Arctic circle south as far as the Hindu Kusk-Himalayan region of Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. Its taxonomy is unresolved, there being at least four and possibly as many as six species recognised. The animal is renowned for its musk, a secretion of the male preputial gland which has been used in traditional medicines and in perfumery from as far back as 3,500 BC. Today musk is among the most valuable animal products in the world, worth up to US $ 45,000 or 3-4 times its weight in gold. Widespread and intense illicit hunting of the musk deer to meet the international demand for musk, combined with habitat destruction, have lead to a drastic decline in musk deer populations. This century populations have disappeared from former parts of their distribution and elsewhere they have become extremely fragmented. That the musk deer has not been wiped out from much more of its geographic distribution can be attributed, in part, to its behaviour: it is essentially solitary and often nocturnal, extremely furtive, and females are likely to be able to reproduce in their first year. However, much of the musk deer's behaviour, physiology and ecology remain poorly understood, exemplified by the difficulties experienced in maintaining breeding populations in captivity. -

“BUCK-UP” An educator’s guide to cervid species around the world Version 1 2014 The mission of the Cervidae Taxon Advisory Group is to provide guidance and recommendations to North American institutions to promote responsible captive management of wild cervidae, moschidae and tragulidae species and support global activities and programs that enhance their survival in the wild. Cervid TAG program leader: Tony Fisher, Minnesota Zoological Garden Cervid TAG education advisor: Brian Ogle NOTE TO EDUCATORS This curriculum guide is designed to introduce students, of various grade levels, to the diverse group of animals in the deer family. The guide was developed as a tool for educators of differing backgrounds, content areas, and specialties a way to provide their students with more knowledge in the area of conservation and the natural world. Additionally, it is our hopes that this guide will provide students with a look into a group of fascinating animals that we share our world with. A variety of multidisciplinary activities are found throughout this guide, and are designed to promote performance in multiple content areas, while enhancing respect and reverence for all living organisms. Each specific activity outline will include appropriate grade levels, procedures, background information, and educator notes. These activities may be presented to students as written, adjusted down, or used as a base with room for enhancement by individual educators. Real-world applications of science and math are built into lessons so students can develop a deeper understanding. All activities are aligned to the National Science Standards, with a detailed breakdown offered at the end of the guide. -

FOREWORD The Environment and Development Desk is releasing an updated version of the book The Endangered Mammals of Tibet. This book contains description of mammals found in Tibet, whose existence on this planet is threatened or who are on the verge of extinction, as observed under the relevant international conventions and Chinese laws. The book provides background information about the habitat, behaviour, and threats to survival for each of these mammals. The discovery of the alarming and increasing trade in animal and animal parts in Asia, particularly in India and China, with Tibet being an important trade link between the supply and demand markets in these two countries, makes the release of this book timely and much needed. Environmental protection is now regarded as a priority in China, but China faces a huge uphill task in protecting the environment. This book is aimed at informing both Tibetan and non-Tibetan readers of the serious risks currently faced by wild animals, which have same rights as humans to live freely and in harmony with their surroundings on this planet. There have been a few isolated cases of Tibetans being involved in the international trade in animal and animal parts.
