Planning Guide for Student & Youth Groups

Dear Educator, Historic , Inc. (HPI) is a non-profit organization dedicated to making our nation’s history relevant and real through interpretation, interaction, and education. We offer tours and programs that immerse students in the rich cultural identity of Historic Philadelphia. Our programs are created by classroom educators for classroom educators and maximize learning opportunities by utilizing contemporary education theories and research-based methods of effective instruction. Our education programs and supplementary curricular materials emphasize cross-curricular learning and meaningful understandings by complying with Common Core standards and reflecting the themes identified by the National Council for the Social Studies as the organizing strands for social studies curriculum. We aim to meet these standards in all thematic areas, most significantly: Culture Individuals, Groups, and Institutions Time, Continuity, and Change Global Connections Individual Development and Identity Civics Ideals and Practices Most importantly, HPI creates unforgettable, exciting, and highly educational experiences for a wide range of learners with a variety of interests and learning styles. We look forward to working with you to create these experiences for your students and community. Many of our tours and programs can be combined with one another to create a full- day experience encompassing a variety of historical characters, themes, and events.

DESIGNED FOR GRADES K-3 A light-hearted adventure where kids of all ages will help animal puppets search for a missing copy of the Declaration of Independence. Along the way, find a runaway dog, Freedom, and meet helpful two-legged and four-legged friends such as Francois the Frog, Graciela the Goose, Nibbles the Mouse, and Broadside the Cat.

DESIGNED FOR GRADES 4-6 How do you get from the 1680s to 2017 in just three city blocks? Join the living timeline and find out as our award-winning storytellers take you on a journey through Historic Philadelphia. Students will learn about religious tolerance, patriotism, equality, and standing up for what you believe in through interactive, educational stories about revolutionary figures like William Penn, James Forten, Octavius Catto, and Susan B. Anthony. During your stroll, historic sites come to life as students become part of the stories in the very places they happened.

DESIGNED FOR GRADES 4-12 Join a Revolutionary-era soldier as he discusses the daily lifestyle of a typical infantryman in the American Continental Army. During this highly interactive program, students will have the opportunity to be fitted with garb and gear, assist in daily chores and activities, and will be given the proper training to become a Continental soldier.

DESIGNED FOR GRADES 4-12 Meet Sarah Melton, a colonial businesswoman who worked as a “mantua maker” designing one- of-a-kind dresses for her clients in Philadelphia, and learn about popular clothing styles of the late 1700s. During this highly interactive program, members of your group will have the opportunity to be dressed in 18th-century clothing of the “middle sort” as Sarah explains the design, creation, and purpose of each item. Encounter the men and women who are bound to make history while enjoying a traditional colonial dinner at City Tavern. Colonial Chocolate Making An Evening at the Betsy Ross House Meet an 18th-century chocolate maker and Avoid the crowds and experience a unique learn about the history of chocolate in one-hour evening tour of the Betsy Ross colonial Philadelphia. This demonstration House with Betsy as your personal guide. features techniques that were used in the Betsy greets your group and tells her own 18th century and includes a sample of story, sharing little-known details about American Heritage© hot chocolate drink, her life. One of Philadelphia’s five original squares, award-winning Franklin Square is an outdoor amusement oasis located in the heart of the Historic District.
