DESCRIPTION: Historic Philadelphia, Inc. makes our nation’s history relevant and real through interpretation, interaction, and education, strengthening Greater Philadelphia’s role as the destination to experience American history. In partnership with the National Park Service, Historic Philadelphia, Inc.’s Once Upon A Nation brings history to life, featuring immersive walking tours, History Makers, Storytelling Benches throughout the Historic District and at Valley Forge, and the Benstitute to specially train all staff. Franklin Square is a family-friendly play place with Philadelphia-themed Mini Golf, the Parx Liberty Carousel, and SquareBurger, hosting parties and special events in the Pavilion in Franklin Square, culminating the year with the Electrical Spectacle Holiday Light Show. Liberty 360 3D Show, an inspiring journey led by Benjamin Franklin, is a year-round indoor attraction shown in the PECO Theater at the Historic Philadelphia Center. The House takes visitors into the life and stories of America’s most famous flagmaker, with interactive and changing exhibitions. HPI’s highly educational Full Day Field Trip Experience, now in its second season, once again sold out and will reach an audience of more than 6,500 elementary students in 2013-2014 school year. HPI is especially proud to have provided educational history programs for more than 2,700 students in underserved school communities at no cost to those students or their schools. Independence After Hours Independence After Hours is an evening walking tour visiting some of the landmarks of Philadelphia’s Historic District and immersing the visitor with Colonial characters who bring history to life right in the place where it happened. In this exclusive opportunity to visit inside at night after public hours, tour-takers experience what those late nights of the summer of 1776 were like for the Founding Fathers. The evening begins with a delicious three-course meal at the Historic City Tavern where Colonial townspeople entertain guests. The Colonial host then “sneaks” everyone into the State House (Independence Hall), once he talks his way past the vigilant night watchman. Inside the Hall, visitors witness several Founding Fathers deep in discussion over the creation of the Declaration of Independence. Add on Liberty 360 3D Show to complete your night for only $5. Tippler’s Tour Past and present meet on Historic Philadelphia, Inc.’s weekly authentic Colonial pub crawl, featuring four different seasonal offerings. Visitors join a Colonial host to hear stories and drinking traditions with fun and lighthearted songs and toasts of the era. With drinks and snacks at each of three modern day watering holes –Salon 401 at Omni Hotel, National Mechanics, Victoria Freehouse, plus the historical City Tavern – the “tippler” guide shares some of Benjamin Franklin’s most fun phrases for someone who is drunk, including “nimptopsical” and “tipsicum grave.” Hear tales about how taverns were used as recruiting stations (getting people inebriated sometimes helped convince them) and how news of the day was discussed in the taverns. ONCE UPON A Ten one-of-a-kind award-winning Once Upon A Nation Storytelling Benches are NATION scattered all over Philadelphia’s Historic District, telling riveting stories of our nation’s STORYTELLING history in the places where they actually happened. Specially-trained, uniformed BENCHES: storytellers delight and entertain with free, short 5-minute stories while sharing the secrets of Philadelphia’s and America’s history. Children can pick up a Story Flag at any storytelling bench, then collect a star from every storyteller on their journey. Flags with all the stars can be redeemed for a History Hero Certificate and a free carousel ride on the Parx Liberty Carousel. VALLEY FORGE: Once Upon A Nation Storytelling Benches at Valley Forge Guaranteed to educate and entertain, these one-of-a-kind Once Upon A Nation Storytelling Benches are in two locations around Valley Forge National Historical Park. Storytellers, trained at the unique Benstitute, share riveting stories of the encampment, and how it became a turning point in the Revolutionary War. Short, five-minute stories are told for free at one of the signature 13-foot curved benches. Valley Forge Secrets & Spies – NEW FOR 2014! George Washington needs help! There’s rumor of a plot to have him kidnapped at Valley Forge. More than 50,000 lights create two alternating shows every 30 minutes. December 31, 3 - 8 pm – Kids’ New Year’s Eve Countdown – Enjoy music, crafts, and dancing in The Pavilion with a free countdown and Square Drop at 6 pm, with a view of the 6 pm fireworks over the Delaware River, followed by showings of Franklin Square’s Electrical Spectacle until 8 pm. Colonial For A Day – New for 2014, Historic Philadelphia, Inc. debuts a program where children (ages 4-12, sizes 5-14) can don Colonial-period attire and immerse themselves in their Historic Philadelphia visit. Rental provides dresses and colorful sashes for girls, and shirts and haversacks for boys. Families can rent these costumes at the Historic Philadelphia Center, 6th and Chestnut Streets, and receive a Colonial Map to guide them on their travels. Created by artisans from the Philadelphia region, the outfits reflect traditional children’s clothing from 18th-century Philadelphia. The rented attire can be enhanced with a variety of accessories for purchase at the Historic Philadelphia Center gift shop, including mob caps, bonnets, bows, tri-corner hats, and wooden muskets. While at the Historic Philadelphia Center, visitors can picture themselves in 1776 at the green screen photo booth and purchase tickets for various Historic Philadelphia attractions. LIBERTY 360: Liberty 360 3D Show in the PECO Theater takes visitors on a patriotic adventure led by Benjamin Franklin in 3D. From the bald eagle to the Statue of Liberty, discover the stories behind some of America’s most beloved symbols of freedom. The 15-minute film surrounds the audience in the customized wraparound PECO Theater. The House, just blocks from Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, is one of Philadelphia’s most popular historic attractions with nearly 200,000 visitors annually. The House is two and a half stories with eight rooms and was originally built in 1740. The House is restored to the period from 1776-1779, when Betsy Ross, as the story tells it, created the first American flag. The House is furnished with period antiques and some reproduction furniture. Highlights include several objects known to have belonged to Betsy Ross. Visit Betsy Ross in the country’s only interactive colonial upholstery shop and get an up close look at the parlor, where she famously received the Flag Committee, and her bedroom where the first flag was secretly stitched. Kids will love the interactive exhibits in the House’s basement. See changing exhibits in the gallery and meet Betsy Ross, in person. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, begin the day at the Flag Raising with Betsy Ross and one of Colonial friends at 10 am! Duration: 25 minutes. 2014 Exhibition This spring, visitors to the Betsy Ross House can see the brand new exhibit, Navigating Night: Life After Dark in Colonial Philadelphia which examines nighttime rituals in the 18th century. June 8-14 – Betsy Ross House Flag Day Festival – Celebrate Flag Day in the birthplace of Old Glory with a week of fun festivities for the whole family at the Betsy Ross House this June. Flag Festival 2014 kicks-off at the start of National Flag Week on June 8 and continues through Stars & Stripes Saturday on June 14. Festivities begin with Betsy raising the flag over the House, continues with a daylong scavenger hunt for kids, and concludes with a flag retirement ceremony. Other highlights of the week include visits from Benjamin Franklin and George Washington, crafts for kids, a flag retirement ceremony, and the chance for young visitors to drill with the Continental Army. The celebration culminates on Flag Day, Saturday, June 14 with a day full of family-friendly entertainment and activity in the House’s courtyard. The seventh annual Stars & Stripes Saturday is the highlight of the new Stripes & Stars Festival, a celebration of both Flag Day and the birthday of the U.S. Army, which features events on Independence Mall, at the National Constitution Center, and the Betsy Ross House. July 4, 11 am - 3 pm – Betsy’s Independence Day Bash – Activities for kids, a children’s naturalization ceremony at 1:30 pm, ceremonial bell ringing at 2 pm. FREE!
