By: Ellie Hersh Introduction Determining what is the appropriate age to teach school children about the Holocaust, or to be taught about other difficult historical events, is a decision that has been debated among many. Some academics believe it is appropriate to start teaching the topic to students as young as Kindergarten, while others believe that it is more appropriate to wait until students are in high school. I believe that there are lessons that can be taken from the Holocaust—acceptance, understanding and appreciating differences, and helping others—which are more than appropriate to start teaching in a Kindergarten classroom. However, I do not believe that teaching the details of the Holocaust is appropriate.

    Roman Law and the Idea of Europe Introduction Kaius Tuori This book explores the controversial role of ancient Rome and its legal heritage, Roman law, in the making of the idea of a shared European legal tradition. This derives from the use of the memory of the classical past in the political upheavals of the early twentieth century. For example, the classical civilization was often used to provide legitimacy to contemporary political causes by seeking parallels between historical examples and current policies. This reaching to the past for guidance for the future has, as a phenomenon, a long history, especially in times of crises. This book argues that a group of émigré scholars who fled totalitarianism had a crucial role in the formation of the European project that lead to integration after the war. While the Nazi and fascist states had legitimated their rule through references to the classical past, in the field of law and the example of ancient Roman law, these scholars would reinterpret the past to demonstrate how the Roman legal heritage was in fact in complete opposition to the totalitarian theories of law.1 One of the most beloved historians writing about the ancient world, Jérôme Carcopino (1881‒1970), published in 1940 his still popular La vie Quotidienne à Rome à l’Apogée de l’Empire (Daily Life in Ancient Rome) during the height of the Second World War. In it, he paints an engaging picture of life in ancient Rome during its height, describing it from the viewpoint of the individual on the street. What is less known is that after the fall of France in June 1940, Carcopino became a supporter of the Vichy regime that collaborated with the German occupiers.

An often-neglected element of Holocaust studies is the daily routines and lives of those Jewish and political prisoners who were relegated to living within the walls of ghettos in major cities throughout Europe. By applying the seemingly innocuous and mundane task of cooking food as a context for their study of the Holocaust, students will be able to apply a real-world lens to their view of the victims’ lives. In analyzing the Jewish dietary restrictions of kashrut and juxtaposing them with the availability of food and living conditions in the ghettos, students will gain a deeper understanding of the social, religious and cultural difficulties the victims underwent. If executed with the utmost respect for the victims and with a deep level of engagement from the students, this lesson can serve to bridge the gap for students who may find the Holocaust hard to understand emotionally. OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to: • Identify many of the hardships incurred by those who lived in ghettos and concentration camps during the Holocaust. • Students will be able to understand the basics of Jewish dietary laws/restrictions and the impact they had on adapting to life in ghettos and concentration camps during the Holocaust. • Students will analyze informal recipes and accompanying stories by survivors of the Holocaust’s ghettos.

Jeremy Floyd, Costume Designer for OUR CLASS, is originally from the Deep South (Alabama to be exact). Having started his long academic journey at the University of South Alabama where he earned his BFA in Costume Design and Technology, he took a break for a few years of sun in LA as a makeup artist, and later attended the University of Kentucky where he received an MA in Theatre. Immediately thereafter, he continued his education at Northwestern University, where he earned an MFA in Costume Design. He has worked as a costume designer all along that path, and has been based in Chicago since 2007. Having been drawn to working with the Remy Bumppo Theatre Company due to the smart and insightful theatre created there, and the attention the company pays to having a thoughtful and educational approach to theatre, Jeremy took on the costume design for OUR CLASS. Despite being quite busy, Jeremy was able to take a moment and answer a few questions regarding his approach to the costume design.

Berlin, Germany. April 20, 1939. Nowadays, we rightly view the Nazi regime as an evil empire, horrific in their actions and despicable in their ideology. However, Nazi Germany was not always viewed as such. In fact, many major corporations that have survived to this day did business with the Nazis both before and during World War II. Furthermore, many business leaders at the time were sympathetic to Nazi ideology and even collaborated with the Nazi government for ideological reasons. Other businesses simply saw a chance to make a profit, ideology aside. Whatever their motivations, some of these Nazi collaborators provided materials that even helped to organize or carry out the Holocaust itself, while other Nazi collaborators used the slave labor from concentration camps to build their products. Some companies just supplied the Nazi populace and troops during wartime. While some of these companies were German corporations that were controlled or created by the Nazis, many were foreign companies that went out of their way to work with the Nazis. Either way, these companies both contributed to and benefitted from the immeasurable human suffering caused by the Nazis.

    Face to Face SUMMER 2005 My Favourite Portrait by Harriet Walter BP Portrait Award 2005 shortlist announced The World’s Most Photographed exhibition explored Special offer to join the Friends of The Fleming Collection From the Director I have been very pleased with the reception of the Lee Miller: Portraits exhibition, which has already been enjoyed by more than 40,000 visitors. Although we knew the outstanding quality of her work, we could not know quite how many people would be drawn in by articles and reviews or by word of mouth. The comments from visitors have ranged from those who have been struck by the wit that runs through many of the portraits to an admiration for her brilliant ability to create wonderful formal compositions outside the studio, with subjects framed by their surroundings and objects to hand. COVER The judging of the 2005 BP Portrait Award and exhibition has just been completed, and Joan Collins although I cannot reveal the winner yet, I can say that we had a record entry once again by Cornel Lucas, 1959 (over 900 portraits submitted) and some works of outstanding quality. The styles remain © Cornel Lucas as various as ever, with everything from expressionist to precisionist renderings of mothers, fathers, lovers and friends (with pets in some cases). I look forward to your own comments and reactions to the exhibition itself. Membership of the National Portrait Gallery is now over 2,500 and growing. Do remember to tell friends and colleagues of the advantages of being a Member (including free admission to ticketed exhibitions).
