DEPTH CHART ON PAGE 54, ROSTER ON PAGES 55-56 STAT OF THE WEEK How wacky a year has hit been with all the crazy offensive numbers? Consider this: Colorado allowed Missouri 491 yards of offense last Saturday night, and yet the Buffs moved up from seventh to sixth in the conference in total defense. Six teams gained 500 or more yards (and eight over 490) in last weekend’s league games. Big 12 schools have played 96 games in 2008, with the 12 offenses gaining 42,415 yards to date (or 441.8 per team per game). OBSCURE NOTE OF THE WEEK PK Aric Goodman never saw the field against Missouri since the Buffs never trotted out their field goal/PAT unit to attempt a kick. Obviously, that didn’t happen during CU’s 242-game scoring run, but with Jameson Davis handling kickoff duties, the question came to mind, “When was the last time your starting placekicker didn’t even play one play? You have to go back to Nov. 15, 1986, when Oklahoma shut out CU in Boulder, 28-0. OU won the toss and declined the first half option; CU wound up receiving the opening kickoff both halves and with no field goal tries that day, Dave DeLine never made the field. ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO We often delve into old Coloradoan yearbooks for game tidbits for the “On This Day” note. Sometimes they are funny; check out what the 1910 yearbook gave for an account of a 14-0 win over Colorado College in ’08 (took a while to print things back then): “Colorado College came to Boulder election day for one of the most spectacular games ever played on a Colorado gridiron. With 4,000 frenzied rooters divided on each side of the field, the storm of cheers that thundered back and forth over the 22 warriors of the moleskin has never been surpassed in the annals of state foot-ball.” Warriors of the moleskin? 2008 COLORADO SCHEDULE & RESULTS (4-4, 1-3 BIG 12) 2008 Date CU* Opponent Opp* TV Result/Time Record Series This-N-That Aug. 31 NR Colorado State (N; Denver) NR FSN W 38-17 4-4 59-19-2 Smith 93 KOR, Hawkins TD runs and defensive effort (CSU: 258 yds) wins it SEPT. 6 NR EASTERN WASHINGTON NR none W 31-24 3-4 1- 0-0 C.Brown’s 27 INT/TD return with 1:44 left rallies CU; Hawkins 3 TD passes SEPT. 18 NR WEST VIRGINIA 21 ESPN W 17-14 (OT) 5-2 1- 0-0 Buffs up 14-0 early, win it in first OT on Goodman 25 FG Sept. 27 NR Florida State (at Jacksonville) NR ABC L 21-39 6-1 0- 3-0 CU missed on early opportunities, FSU pulls away thanks to special teams OCT. 4 NR TEXAS (N; HC) 5 FSN L 14-38 8-0 7-10-0 Buffs sluggish on offense, late first half UT TD put ‘Horns up 21-0 Oct. 11 NR at Kansas 16 ESPN2 L 14-30 5-3 41-24-3 KU breaks open a 16-14 game with two fourth quarter scores OCT. 18 NR KANSAS STATE (FW) NR FSN W 14-13 4-4 44-19-1 Buffs rush for 247, CU forces KS into 6 3-and-outs, matching season total Oct. 25 NR at Missouri 16 FSN L 0-58 6-2 31-39-3 Tigers end CU’s 242-game scoring streak, but trot first team D out at end Nov. 1 NR at Texas A & M NR none 12:05 p.m. 3-5 5- 2-0 Last trip to College Station was wild 29-26 OT loss to Aggies in 2004 NOV. 8 IOWA STATE TBA TBA 2-6 47-14-1 CU 17-3 vs. Iowa State in Boulder since 1967, including 11 of last 12 NOV. 15 OKLAHOMA STATE TBA TBA 7-1 26-17-1 Last meeting in ’05, a 34-0 CU win, LB Burton returns pick 99 yards for TD Nov. 28 at Nebraska ABC 1:30 p.m. 5-3 18-46-2 Teams play one of six games in ’07 where both teams scored 50-plus Dec. 6 Big 12 Championship Game ABC 6:00 p.m. (Kansas City, Mo.) From where we started to where we finished, we are comfortable, but I know that we are not satisfied.” That’s not to say that his record-setting of- fensive style will take a back seat. Not an offense that set nearly 50 individual and team offensive records a year ago. It’s a focus seen in the classroom as 22 play- ers earned University of Arizona Mary J. It’s a focus seen off the field as a head coach builds a tight-knit bond with his charges.

  • Big Plays “Not in the Boxscore”
big plays “not in the Boxscore” Often a play takes place which makes the difference between winning and losing, but it gets lost in the shuffle and then forgotten as time passes by. The following is a listing of some of these moments and the players who created them in the history of Colorado football: Zack Jordan, 1952 vs. Oklahoma John Stearns, 1971 Bluebonnet Bowl vs. Houston CU tailback Zack Jordan’s powerful right leg was the Buffs’ best Your team is up by six, 23-17, with seven minutes remaining in the weapon in a 21-21 tie which was the Sooners’ only blemish in what was bowl game and it’s fourth-and-9 from your own 10-yard line. Punt, right? to become a 47-game undefeated string. Jordan’s 72-yard quick kick to Don’t tell that to John “Bad Dude” Stearns. Moments earlier, Stearns had the OU 3 set up CU’s first TD. His 77-yarder put the Buffs in position for knocked the ball out of tight end Riley Odoms’ hands on fourth down in their second score. For good measure he added a 78-yard boot in the the end zone to prevent Houston from taking the lead in its home stadi- fourth period which quickly produced the setting for CU’s final score. It um. So perhaps still fired up, Stearns, who doubled as CU’s punter, was the finest exhibition of kicking in the nation that year and earned scooped up a bad center snap, looked around, and took off downfield for Jordan a spot in the NCAA record book.
