Putting together Isabel Spagnardi Scott G. Bienstock Hthis special issue has been a lot of work, but just as much fun. Senior Vice President Editorial Director I was ten years old in 1967. PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • Mark Levinson a New Era
Music Man A Brief Biography of Mark Levinson A New Era Some audio historians consider the 1950s and 1960s the “Golden Age” of American hi-fi. Companies like Dynaco, Fisher, Scott, McIntosh and Marantz all made great products, some still sought by collectors today. By the late 1960s, these companies had largely exhausted their creative energies. Instead of continuing to push for better performance, they mostly sought to capitalize on their brand names by introducing cheaper products to compete with mass-market offerings from a burgeoning Japanese electronics industry. While this trend brought affordable audio to millions of music fans, it did so by compromising performance potential, a classic “race to the bottom” that created a void in the market serving discerning music lovers. Into this void stepped Mark Levinson, a young musician with a passion for music reproduction and artisanal workmanship. Mark Levinson Audio Systems ML-5 Modified Studer Professional Tape Recorder Already a legend at an early age—he was only 21 when he famously built the stage mixer used at the Woodstock Music Festival in 1968—Levinson set out to create no-compromise audio playback equipment that would come as close as possible to recreating the energy of live performances. He was uniquely qualified to do this, combining the musical ear of a lifelong multi-instrumentalist with the patient perfectionism required to do groundbreaking design and engineering. He was also fortunate to be associated with mentors such as Richard Burwen who encouraged him always to ask hard questions and never to settle for easy solutions. Founded in 1972, Mark Levinson Audio Systems (MLAS) was the unquestioned leader among many high-performance audio companies that started in that decade.

  • Some Advice for Phone-Addicted Youth Who Want To
The Roots Report: Look What’s Going Down: Artists have a duty to voice their opinions Okee dokee folks… “It’s s time we stop, hey, what’s that sound, everybody look what’s going down.” This is from one of the most famous protest songs ever written, “For What It’s Worth,” by Stephen Stills (Buffalo Springfield). It was written more than 50 years ago in response to the Sunset Strip curfew riots in California and is still revered as one of the best songs of that generation. A few years later, Neil Young wrote his song “Ohio” about the Kent State shootings. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young quickly recorded this song, and when it was released as a single, it was backed with another Stephen Stills protest anthem “Find The Cost Freedom.” At the time, “Ohio” was banned by some radio stations, but today it is one of the few actual protest songs still being played on radio. These songs, the bands and the writers were major inspirations and influences for me as a musician and songwriter. Not only do I perform “Ohio” with my band Forever Young and “For What It’s Worth” when I play solo, but I have written many sociopolitical songs of my own that are part of my body of solo work. I feel protest songs need to be written, but they are the hardest type of song to get right. They need to express the concern and anger of the subject matter and marry it perfectly with a melody to make the song viable.

  • To Design and Development of a Cost Effective Electronic Drum Kit
International Journal of Engineering Research and Applications (IJERA) ISSN: 2248-9622 th International Conference on Industrial Automation and Computing (ICIAC- 12-13 April 2014) RESEARCH ARTICLE OPEN ACCESS To Design and Development of a Cost Effective Electronic Drum Kit Vikas Barai*, Prof. T.H.Nagrare** *(Department Of Computer Science, G H Raisoni College Of Engineering Nagpur, India Email: [email protected]) **(Assistant Professor, Department of Information Technology G H Raisoni College Of Engineering Nagpur, India Email: [email protected]) ABSTRACT The goal of the project is to create a Cost Effective electronic drum kit using piezoelectric sensors for various percussion instruments. The inputs to the kit are small drum pads, which house a piezoelectric transducer. The output voltage from this device is detected and its output is interfaced with microcontroller . This information is processed through a Drum sound controller module which controls audio playback. The background work focuses on the concepts of tracking the timing of musical signals, deriving information from them, and creating a musical accompaniment. The system will then generate an expressive drum beat to accompany the audio signal in real time. The system is intended as a practice tool as well as a means to observe the musical interaction that may occur between humans and machine. It would involve implementing on an EEPROM for additional sound storage. It will contain a single module which will carry all sound database and allow the player to make their own patches and it will make it independent from interfacing with a computer. Keywords - Arduino, Cost efficient drum kit, Electronic Drums, Home made percussion, Midi controllers, Piezo sensors.

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.
