Registration Open for Public Utah Jazz 3-On-3 Tournament During Summer League All Ages, Skill Levels to Compete Outdoors at Park Place on July 2 Registration Open for Public Utah Jazz 3-on-3 Tournament During Summer League All ages, skill levels to compete outdoors at Park Place on July 2 SALT LAKE CITY (May 18, 2018) – A sea of basketball courts will take over the Park Place parking lot adjacent to Vivint Smart Home Arena when the first Utah Jazz 3-on-3 Tournament is held on Monday, July 2 as part of the Utah Jazz Summer League festivities. The tournament offers opportunities for players of all ages and skill levels to compete with 34 different divisions. Team signups are now available at www.utahjazzsummerleague.com. Registration includes three games and a single elimination tournament along with a T-shirt, admission ticket to one day of Utah Jazz Summer League and a drawstring bag. The Utah Jazz 3-on-3 Tournament offers a variety of recreational and competitive levels, starting with 10U boys and girls divisions through “Top Gun” men’s and women’s categories. Four players are signed up for each team. Each age group is represented along with specialty divisions such as six-foot-and-under and corporate team entries. Tournament check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. and play will finish before the Summer League doubleheader that night. Prizes for winning teams in each division are four tickets to a Utah Jazz game this upcoming regular season. The “Top Gun” male winners will receive free entry to the Salt Lake City Stars G League open tryouts. The “Top Gun” female winners will receive one hour of court time at Vivint Smart Home Arena for their use. The six-game, four-team Utah Jazz Summer League will be held on July 2, 3 and 5 at Vivint Smart Home Arena, featuring the Utah Jazz, San Antonio Spurs, Atlanta Hawks and Memphis Grizzlies. Six first-round draft picks from the NBA Draft 2018 will be eligible to play. The Utah Jazz Summer League showcases rookies, sophomores, select free agents and athletes competing to make NBA and G League regular season rosters. Tickets sales begin today. Lower bowl tickets are available at $8 for a one-day pass or $15 for a three-day pass. A one-day pass provides access to both games played on that day.     HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE Mario A. Elie, ‘81 Mario A. Elie grew up in Manhattan and was a parishioner of Holy Name of Jesus on W 96th St. Elie attended Power Memorial Academy where he played basketball alongside Chris Mullin under coach Steve Donohue. Elie played street ball in Central Park and other locations in New York City during the 1980s. Elie played college basketball at American International College in Springfield, MA. Elie led AIC to their conference's first NCAA Division II Tournament Quarter-Final. He did not catch on in the NBA right away. In 1986, Elie started his professional career at Killester in Ireland, where he won Player of the Year honors. He later played in the Portuguese League and then played in the World Basketball League and also in the Continental Basketball Association. Mario broke into the NBA in the 90-91 season playing for the Philadelphia 76ers on a short-term contract and then spent the rest of the season with the Golden State Warriors. In the 92-93 season he was with Portland and in 93-94 went to the Houston Rockets. Mario won two NBA Championships, first in 1994 and again in 1995. He continued with the Houston Rockets through the 97-98 season. He then signed with the San Antonio Spurs where he won his third NBA Championship in 1999. Mario’s final NBA year was 2000-01 when he was playing with the Phoenix Suns. In 2007 Mario was inducted into the New York Basketball Hall of Fame and was named one of the top ten players in Houston Rockets history.

    Dear Coach, As we prepare for the season to begin, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to another year of Jr. Jazz Youth Basketball and thank you for your involvement. Speaking from experience, I know that coaching is a labor of love—it can involve hard work and sacrifice, but it’s an extremely rewarding experience. Without your dedication and effort, this program would not be the overwhelming success that it is today. The two biggest things that I have been stressing to my players are playing with the pass on offense and connecting our efforts defensively. I strongly believe that sharing the ball, along with strong communication and positioning, are the most crucial elements to any team’s success. I think you’ll find that emphasizing these areas can help improve your team’s overall performance. Beyond the basic skills, I would hope your kids leave the season with an understanding of good sportsmanship and a sense of accomplishment. Naturally, some kids will have more talent and ability than others. Nevertheless, it’s important that every child feels that he/she is a contributing member of the team—regardless of whether they win or lose. And above all, let’s have fun. We must never forget that basketball, after all, is a game, and that games are supposed to be fun. Remember that coaching Jr. Jazz is about teaching, and that your success is not based on your win-loss record, but in watching kids grow and develop while enjoying themselves. Good luck, and thanks again for your commitment to this valuable program.
