Dear Friends, In my first year as President of St. George’s Society, I am pleased to share with you the 2015 Annual Report featuring the Society’s activities and achievements in 2014. Thanks to your generous support, we continue to fulfill the Society’s historic mission of providing vital assistance to people of British and Commonwealth heritage in New York who are in need of financial and emotional support. Highlights of 2014 include the following: • We gave comfort and security to 109 sick, elderly and disabled people by providing assistance with basic necessities such as rent, utility payments and medication, in addition to advice and counseling from our two professional social workers (see pages 14-15). • Thanks to money raised in the “Fund-A-Scholar” auction at the Society’s annual gala, the English Ball, we awarded 38 new scholarships to final year students at Lehman College, part of The City University of New York, helping them to complete their studies and launch their careers. • In addition to the English Ball, we hosted a variety of events, including the Society’s first golf outing since 2008 and our first ever Christmas Carol Concert in partnership with the British International School of New York (see pages 4-5). • Our co-brand GEORGE continued to grow and bring new members to the Society. We launched a series of pub quizzes in partnership with the British Consulate General New York and The UK Universities Alumni Group and the GEORGE Winter Bash honoring , OBE raised over $80,000 for the Society’s charitable programs (see pages 10-11).

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated supporters, volunteers, committee members and staff for helping us make this happen and my predecessor Bob Titley for his sterling leadership during the past two years. I would also like to welcome to the team, Karen Karpowich, who joined as our CEO in October 2014. Prior to joining St. George’s, Karen held leadership positions at The Financial Women’s TRADITIONAssociation and The New History York Women’s Agenda. EDUCATION Legacy Finally, we were sad to see the departure of the Society’s Almoner, John Shannon, in BritishFebruary 2015. COMMUNITY John oversaw tremendous growth Royal in the Society’s Patronage charitable giving over the past 20 years and we have launched a special appeal in his honor (see page 14). I urge SOCIETYyou to support The Commonwealth John Shannon Beneficiary Fund and help Fundraising us continue to make a real difference to the lives of the less fortunate in our community. Annual Report 2015 13 BENEFICIARY PROGRAM

The Society’s Beneficiary Program provides vital assistance to people of British and Commonwealth heritage in New York who are in need of financial and emotional support.

In 2014 we helped 109 sick, elderly and disabled people with basic necessities such as rent, home care expenses, utility payments and medication.

The Society’s dedicated social workers, Mary Lamasney and Julie Rosenberg, also personally visit each beneficiary to offer emotional support and counseling and make check-in phone calls throughout the year.

THE JOHN SHANNON BENEFICIARY FUND In February 2015, John Shannon, the Society’s Almoner of 20 years, retired. A major accomplishment of his tenure was the expansion of the Society’s charitable programs. The number of people St. George’s Society helps each year has almost doubled since 1994 so a part-time social worker was hired to share the workload. The Society launched an appeal in John’s honor earlier this year to underwrite the salary of the Society’s assistant social worker, Julie Rosenberg. We have already raised over a third of our $15,000 goal and are grateful to the following people who have contributed so far:

Dr. Paul Beresford- Mr. C. Hugh Hildesley Hill, MBE Ms. Ann Hall Kaplan Mr. Michael A. Boyd Ms. Christine $15,000 Mr. Geoffrey N. Bradfield Mainwaring-Samwell $12,500 Dr. and Mrs. Donald K. Mr. Charles H. Moore $10,000 Briggs Mr. Frank E. Morgan II $7,500 Ms. Pauline Brooks Mr. Peter J.C. Mosse, $5,000 $5,475 Mr. Peter Buffington FRSA $2,500 Mr. Scott Evenbeck Mr. Bruce Racond $0 Mr. John McC. Shannon Mr. Martin J. Sullivan, OBE Mr. and Mrs. Robert J.K. Titley

“It was incredibly rewarding for me to serve St. George’s Society’s beneficiaries as the Society’s Almoner for 20 years. One of the developments of which I am most proud is the growth of the Society’s beneficiary program. We are helping around 100 people today – more than one social worker can manage. With your support we can ensure that our beneficiaries are well-looked after while increasing the Society’s capacity to help more people in the future.” JOHN SHANNON, ALMONER EMERITUS

14 Annual Report 2015 DERRICK’S STORY The heat wave last summer prompted the Society’s

social workers, Mary and Julie, to call a number of COMPASSION our more vulnerable beneficiaries to check on their well-being. During one phone call, Julie discovered that Derrick, an elderly Jamaican beneficiary in Brooklyn who suffered from a stroke two years ago, was having a difficult time with his breathing due to the heat. Derrick and his wife Estelle have a modest income despite working hard for many years and the Society assists with their monthly rent. Estelle was doing her best to keep Derrick comfortable with cold compresses and a fan but Julie felt that they urgently needed air conditioning. The Society arranged for a unit to be installed and increased the couple’s monthly allowance to help cover the extra utility cost.

“Derrick and Estelle are so grateful for the Society’s support and didn’t want to ask for additional help. They were planning to endure the heat over the summer but receiving the air conditioning unit was a huge relief for them and it’s clear that they both feel much less physical and emotional stress.” JULIE, ST. GEORGE’S SOCIETY SOCIAL WORKER

MARJORIE’S STORY In July, Mary decided to visit 80-year-old Marjorie from England after calling her and learning that she had been ill for several weeks. Mary asked Roger, another beneficiary and animal-lover, to accompany her in case Marjorie’s two dogs also needed care and attention. On arrival, Mary soon realized that Marjorie urgently needed to go to a hospital. She was very reluctant to leave her dogs so Roger volunteered to look after them and Marjorie was rushed to Mount Sinai. Upon examination the doctors found multiple lesions in Marjorie’s brain and other vital organs and she was admitted to Calvary Hospital for hospice care. Sadly she passed away four weeks later. Marjorie’s main concern throughout her illness was her beloved dogs but Mary was able to reassure her that they were being well cared for by Roger.

“I am so glad that Marjorie found St. George’s Society at the end of her life and that she was looked after with dignity and compassion. It is a comfort to know that her needs were taken care of and that her last days in the hospice were made comfortable and happy.” SHIRLEY, MARJORIE’S SISTER

IN MEMORIAM We are sad to report that the following beneficiaries passed away in 2014: Khoelina Balgobin from Guyana Alvyn Price from Jamaica Elga Brown from Jamaica Alice Tell from Ireland Marjorie Cahill from England Arthur Wilkes from England Lilieth Deans from Jamaica

Thanks to the donation, each beneficiary received a food basket and a check for $175 (increased from $150 the year before). The extra $25 made a real difference to our seniors who reported that they used the money to pay medical or utility bills or to buy necessities such as new winter clothing, bed linen and food.

In October 2014, St. George’s Society hosted its third annual Shadwell Beneficiary Tea Party thanks to a thoughtful bequest from the late Wendy Shadwell who wanted to encourage social interaction and foster friendship between beneficiaries confined to their homes. The Society provided transportation to and from the Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan for forty beneficiaries. During the afternoon the “Shadwell Buddy Award” was presented to St. George’s Society beneficiary Roger for his outstanding service to a fellow beneficiary, Marjorie. Roger looked after Marjorie’s two dogs when she was rushed to hospital and needed reassurance that her beloved pets were in good hands (see page 15 to read more about Marjorie’s story).

“Three years ago I lost my job and was hospitalized. I was worried I might end up homeless. Fortunately St. George’s Society helped me out and I’m pleased to have been able to help Marjorie during what was a very difficult time for her.” ROGER ST. GEORGE’S SOCIETY BENEFICIARY
