It was October 1st, and of course that means a slew of end-of-month reports, meter readings, deadlines, etc., but that wasn’t it. Everything was pretty normal at the house, and the Redskins weren’t playing until Years Monday night, so that wasn’t it, either. It wasn’t until I came to The Rock for our Hoop Dreams meeting around 4:30 and I was putting my key into the lock on the office door that it dawned on me: It had been 5 years to the day that Sara presented On me with that key on my first day on the job – October 1, 2012. I don’t think anybody could have predicted the future of RVCC on that day, with the dire financial challenges we faced and the wounds from the leadership turmoil earlier that year still so fresh. Sara was brand new on the job, too, but I think that both of us knew that it was worth whatever effort it took to make this place reach its true potential. Lord knows it wasn’t easy in the beginning. The Hamner Theater moved out the day before I walked in. On my 4th day on the job, the Treasure Chest manager quit to move to Kentucky.
