BCCM Choral, Vocal & Opera Faculty Welcome! Is Leonard Bernstein’s Candide an opera or is it a piece of music theatre? As we celebrate the centennial of the composer’s birth we can certainly agree—no matter what we call it—that Candide is a great work. It is also a great challenge to produce and a great vehicle to feature the large and talented group of young performers in the Bob Cole Conservatory Opera Institute. It has been a pleasure to have Eli Villanueva with us again as our guest Stage Director. His imagination, humor, and generosity have made this not only a learning experience but a happy working process for all of us. It has been a pleasure to work with the faculty and students in Theatre Arts and we are grateful to department chairs Jeff Janisheski and Johannes Müller Stosch for supporting this collaboration. The Opera Institute has grown significantly in recent years and we, like Candide, have nothing but optimistic ideas for our future … … Thank you for coming! It ridicules the philosophy that "All is for the Best in the Best of All Possible Worlds." It portrays the hero Candide’s dissatisfaction when he reaches the utopian Eldorado and it ends in a mood of modest, yet confident optimism. The book was publicly burned in Geneva, prohibited in Paris, and put on the Vatican index of prohibited books. It went through edition after edition. The original Broadway production of Bernstein’s Candide opened at the Martin Beck Theater in New York on December 1, 1956 to mixed reviews and closed the following February. Bernstein revised the work several times, including a version for Scottish opera in 1989, before his death in 1990. There are five versions of Candide available for performance; we present today what is known as the ‘National Theatre Version’ revised and first performed in April, 1999 at the Olivier Theatre, London. Voltaire: Candide, ou l'Optimisme edition from 1759. Synopsis Candide, a Westphalian youth, believes fervently in the optimistic philosophy of his tutor, Pangloss, that everything happens for the best. Candide plunges headlong into travel and an endless series of disasters, including the apparent death of the woman he loves, Cunegonde, and the execution of Pangloss himself in the Spanish Inquisition. His travels take him to the New World in the company of a long-suffering Old Woman, and the miraculously saved Cunegonde, to the fabled land of Eldorado. Once back home in Westphalia Candide finally repudiates Pangloss’s philosophy and resolves to build a good, honest life for himself and his companions. A Discography of the Choral Symphony by J. F. Weber In previous issues of this Journal (XV:2-3; XVI:l-2), an effort was made to compile parts of a composer discography in depth rather than breadth. This one started in a similar vein with the realization that SO CDs of the Beethoven Ninth Symphony had been released (the total is now over 701). This should have been no surprise, for writers have stated that the playing time of the CD was designed to accommodate this work. After eighteen months' effort, a reasonably complete discography of the work has emerged. The wonder is that it took so long to collect a body of information (especially the full names of the vocalists) that had already been published in various places at various times. The Japanese discographers had made a good start, and some of their data would have been difficult to find otherwise, but quite a few corrections and additions have been made and some recording dates have been obtained that seem to have remained 1.Dlpublished so far. The first point to notice is that six versions of the Ninth didn't appear on the expected single CD. Bl:lhm (118) and Solti (96) exceeded the 75 minutes generally assumed (until recently) to be the maximum CD playing time, but Walter (37), Kegel (126), Mehta (127), and Thomas (130) were not so burdened and have been reissued on single CDs since the first CD release. On the other hand, the rather short Leibowitz (76), Toscanini (11), and Busch (25) versions have recently been issued with fillers.

DEBARTOLO PERFORMING ARTS CENTER PRESENTING SERIES PRESENTS MUSIC BY PHILIP GLASS IN A PERFORMANCE OF AN EVENING OF CHAMBER MUSIC WITH PHILIP GLASS TIM FAIN AND THIRD COAST PERCUSSION MARCH 30, 2019 AT 7:30 P.M. LEIGHTON CONCERT HALL Made possible by the Teddy Ebersol Endowment for Excellence in the Performing Arts and the Gaye A. and Steven C. Francis Endowment for Excellence in Creativity. PROGRAM: (subject to change) PART I Etudes 1 & 2 (1994) Composed and Performed by Philip Glass π There were a number of special events and commissions that facilitated the composition of The Etudes by Philip Glass. The original set of six was composed for Dennis Russell Davies on the occasion of his 50th birthday in 1994. Chaconnes I & II from Partita for Solo Violin (2011) Composed by Philip Glass Performed by Tim Fain π I met Tim Fain during the tour of “The Book of Longing,” an evening based on the poetry of Leonard Cohen. In that work, all of the instrumentalists had solo parts. Shortly after that tour, Tim asked me to compose some solo violin music for him. I quickly agreed. Having been very impressed by his ability and interpretation of my work, I decided on a seven-movement piece. I thought of it as a Partita, the name inspired by the solo clavier and solo violin music of Bach. The music of that time included dance-like movements, often a chaconne, which represented the compositional practice. What inspired me about these pieces was that they allowed the composer to present a variety of music composed within an overall structure.

  • Philip Glass's New Symphony No. 11 Highlights Bruckner Orchestra's Appearance at Bing Concert Hall
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Robert Cable, Stanford Live 650-736-0091 [email protected] PHOTOS: http://live.stanford.edu/press PHILIP GLASS’S NEW SYMPHONY NO. 11 HIGHLIGHTS BRUCKNER ORCHESTRA’S APPEARANCE AT BING CONCERT HALL Conductor Dennis Russell Davies commissioned the work for the composer’s 80th birthday Stanford, CA, February 1, 2017—It was 25 years ago that Dennis Russell Davies led the Brooklyn Philharmonic through the first American performance of a Philip Glass symphony. Now the same maestro who has helped launch all but one of Glass’s symphonies celebrates the composer’s 80th birthday with his newest work, the Symphony No. 11, performed by the Bruckner Orchestra of Linz at Stanford’s Bing Concert Hall on Sunday, February 12. Perhaps best known for his film scores (The Truman Show, The Hours, Notes on a Scandal) and for his operas like Einstein on the Beach, Glass didn’t start writing symphonies until he was in his 50s. “I could easily not have done any symphonies, but it turned out that Dennis Russell Davies was interested in working on that kind of work with me,” Glass recently told the New York Times. “And he pretty much commissioned all the symphonies, except for No. 7.” So to commemorate the composer’s 80th, Davies commissioned No. 11 for the January 31 (Glass’s actual birthday) world premiere at Carnegie Hall. Stanford Live launched its own celebration in the fall when Glass himself was on hand to kick off the season at Bing, joining four other pianists to perform his complete series of Études for piano.

The Maryland Opera Studio Presents LA CLEMENZA DI TITO by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart KAY THEATRE KAY at The Clarice November 17-21, 2017 November 17-21, THE MARYLAND OPERA STUDIO’S FALL OPERA PRESENTATION: THE “WHITE OPERA” During their four semesters in the Maryland Opera Studio, singers perform in two fully staged operas. The first of these, presented in the fall of the second training year, receives a minimal production: a chamber orchestra, very little in the way of sets or props, and simplified costumes. Because the basis for the fall opera’s costuming over the years has been a set of white muslin mock-ups of period clothing originally produced for classroom use, it has become known informally as the “white opera.” The purpose is both practical and pedagogical. Minimal production costs allow MOS to present two full productions, instead of just one (as is the practice in most training programs), ensuring that singers graduate with two complete roles on their resumes. Even more important, however, is a principle central to the mission of the Maryland Opera Studio: the training of singers who use their voices, acting, and physical presence to tell an effective dramatic story, without the crutches of sets, costumes, wigs, and makeup. The “white” opera is the art form at its most elemental: the singer, the story, and the music take center stage.
