  • Council Responds to Flood Crisis
KYOGLE COUNCIL M E D I A R E L E A S E Date: 3 April 2017 Kyogle Council staff are back in the field repairing and inspecting flood damage across the Kyogle Council area, with the damages bill expected to be between $3 million and $5 million. Council's priority is to restore access to residents as soon as possible. Staff have been working since Thursday night to keep main roads open and were out in the field throughout the weekend inspecting roads, documenting damaged infrastructure, developing a prioritised program of works and restoring access where possible. Several roads were reopened Saturday and Sunday after flood water subsided and staff were able to clear debris from bridges, carry out culvert repairs, and repair bridge approaches. This work will continue throughout the week. At this stage, staff have identified a number of bridges with structural damage and a number of roads remain closed where the damage requires further assessment or alternative routes are available to residents and emergency vehicles. The number of areas affected in this way is likely to increase as further inspections take place. On Saturday afternoon there were more than 200 people isolated by landslips and damaged roads and bridges across nine different roads. By Monday morning access has been restored to all but three of these roads. A temporary bridge is being constructed on McClellands Road at Barkers Vale to replace a bridge washed away in the floods, and this should be open to traffic by this afternoon (Monday 3 April 2017), restoring access to about 20 people.

Telopea 12(2) 257–261 Doodia hindii ( Blechnaceae) a new species from north eastern New South Wales, Australia T. Carrick Chambers National Herbarium of NSW, Mrs Macquaries Road, Sydney, NSW 2000, Australia Email: [email protected] Abstract Doodia hindii Tindale ex T.C.Chambers is described for the first time. This is a rarely collected species from rainforest in mountain regions of north eastern New South Wales, bringing to nine the number of species of Doodia in Australia . Introduction The genus Doodia (Blechnaceae) is estimated to contain more than 30 species distributed through Australasia, Papuasia, Malesia, Sri Lanka and the Pacific region extending north east to Hawaii and as far east as Easter Island (Parris 1972, 1998). Hybrids have been reported among some of the species especially in the D. caudata complex (Andrews 1990). Eight species have been defined by Parris (1998) in the Flora of Australia treatment. By modifying the key provided there, this additional (ninth) Australian taxon can be accommodated as follows (modifications are in italics): 4: Numerous strongly reduced basal pinnae/segments present; abaxial surface of pinnae/segments mid vein either with or without tubercles .............................................................................. 5 5 Rhizome erect, forming caudex up to 30 cm ................................................ 1. • A History of Upper Richmond River Valley Forests, New South Wales Jane Lennon Heritage Consultant, Hamilton, Queensland 4007
Chapter 1—Australia’s Ever-changing Forests VI: Proceedings of the Eighth National Conference on Australian Forest History. Brett J. Stubbs et al. (ed.). © 2012, ISBN 978-0-9757906-2-5 ‘Large quantities of marketable pine...’ a history of Upper Richmond River valley forests, New South Wales Jane Lennon Heritage consultant, Hamilton, Queensland 4007 Landscape setting The eastern part of the border between New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland lies along the McPherson Range where the highest points are Mt Ballow (1,280 m) and Mt Lindesay (1,177 m). Four lines of ranges run south from this main range—the Great Dividing Range in the west then Koreelah, Tooloom and Richmond Ranges. They are separated by the broad valleys of several streams—Koreelah, Tooloom and Duck Creeks draining to the Clarence River, and Findon and Grady’s Creeks, along with the others such as Ironpot and Eden Creeks running off the Richmond Range, draining into the Richmond River. The State Forests (SFs) generally occur on the tops and slopes of the following ranges and ridges at altitudes varying between 600 and 1,200 m: McPherson Range—Mt Lindesay, Donaldson and Koreelah SFs; Richmond Range—Unumgar, Edinburgh Castle, Richmond Range and Toonumbar SFs; Tooloom Range—Yabbra SF; and Koreelah Range—Bald Knob, Woodenbong and Beaury SFs. The topography has been determined by streams downcutting 2 LENNON through Tertiary basalt flows into the underlying Jurassic sandstones and forming south-trending river valleys. On the highest areas the ranges are capped with Tertiary basalt, and on the lower areas where erosion has removed the basalts, Jurassic sedimentary rocks crop out.
